It's a recurring theme in a few of the songs, so I'm going to assume it's autobiographical. Can't see him being that gripped by someone else's relationship issues.

FWIW, as someone else pointed out, it seems like all is well on social media, even though social media is The Matrix/The Void/Where The People That Thanos Snapped Disappeared To For Five Years. Maybe a prolonged rough patch post-COVID.
May your days be long, til kingdom come.

Agreed, it was the theme of most of the album lyrically. Maybe they were going through a rough patch and have sorted it out, or they're just keeping it very private. Scared of Fear and Setting Sun especially felt like letters to an ex or soon to be ex. Something Special seemed like a father desperately wanting to tell his children that despite the marriage being over they still love the kids very much.

I was with my brother and some friends last night and we all got the same vibe. Again, not saying they're autobiographical, but it wouldn't be the first time Ed has wrote about his personal life. Parting Ways, all the way to Future Days, Ed has never shied away from making it obvious what he's thinking and going through at the time he's writing. These songs were written over two years ago, so maybe it was just a bad time in their relationship. This definitely puts a new spin on the title Dark Matter. I thought it was going to be mostly about space and politics and instead it seems like it's about a man coming to terms with his marriage ending.

Just try to remember that “Oceans” was about a surf board before trying to speculate on someone’s relationship.

It could be about close friendships and even family relationships that have turned sour over the years.

Yes, this album is about Eddie's imminent divorce. Just like Parting Ways was about the bands imminent break up and retirement.

Right, but the lyrics for these songs were much more specific.

I am 100% sure it's not an autobiographical album.

I just sense a bit of a theme going on.  A lot of the lyrics seemed related.  Not full-on "Concept Album", but some connections.

If it was one song I wouldn't think anything of it. It was several songs and I think that's why a bunch of people independently came to "jeeze I hope everything is ok "

I always took Parting Ways as a nod to Ed’s previous marriage.

Personally I don't have any interest in analyzing it much beyond that but there's definitely a theme

Hi Paul!  No worries.  It's a positive change for me.  It was a very caustic relationship- borderline personality disorder.  I felt totally trapped.  I'm much happier and healthy now.  I'm in a great little town in a peaceful house with my daughter.  We have house plants!  We have both of the dogs!  I'm able to breathe again.  There's definitely life after divorce.

It's a recurring theme in a few of the songs, so I'm going to assume it's autobiographical. Can't see him being that gripped by someone else's relationship issues.

He's written plenty of songs that are telling stories about characters he makes up. "Better Man" is a prominent example of a song about a strained relationship that is not about him.

Speculating that the lyrics suggest a certain topic is one thing, however, speculating about a band member's personal life is not ok. The band's personal lives are private. Gossip, not ok. Please don't do it.  It's all in the Posting Guidelines: https://community.pearljam.com/discussion/228366/forum-posting-guidelines

    Thank you
