Tough crowd. 20 seconds playing over a TV bumper is one step up from a cell phone recording outside of a venue but still not nearly enough for me to have an opinion.
Gave half a listen to the backdoor video a few weeks back and treated this the same way. Need to hear the real thing. Can't tell anything from a snippet.
I’m getting a Motley Crue shout at the devil vibe from this clip.

I don't mind it except for the "woah" part. Sounds forced.
If you are looking for music to wow you, I wouldn't be looking towards a band that has been around for 30+ years.
My expectations nowadays is 2-3 good songs an album.
They definitely have more than that per album
Gigaton had about 3 good songs. Backspacer and Lightning Bolt had about 4-5.
LB probably has the least songs I dislike or would skip, but none of them stand out to me as ones I look forward to either. All pretty much middle that I am indifferent to. The others have at least 2 or 3 that I look forward to when they come on PJ radio or are played live, but might have more I would skip if I was listening to on the album. As a result, most of the post Avocado albums I rarely listen to anymore.
LB has a bunch of good songs but it’s not a great album, it feels like a mishmash of random sessions. BS has fewer great standalone songs but it’s a better album because it has its own cohesive identity which is unique in the catalog. Gigaton is ambitious & experimental but they didn’t stick the landings on all the experiments. It’s also (for me at least) colored more by the events of the time of its release than the others which makes it hard to give a fair rating to. i think all three are still good, but the preceding 8 were all great.

I could hardly make anything of it since it was barely audible. Based on the reaction in this tread, it doesn’t seem to mesh with Matt Pinfields take unless his gears get turned by songs that aren’t very heavy.
regardless of early reviews of heaviness, we knew there would be a song or 2 like this.......could turn out to be decent, i too commented that per preview it was meh, but the shock in some....come on, like a bunch of Katie Britts
Around the same time, Delta's slogan was "We Get You There." I always appreciated the honesty of that slogan. Great service? Good food? Nicely appointed planes? Nope, don't expect any of that. We're not promising anything except that we'll get you wherever it is you need to go.

I went back and listened to it again after the track list was available. I thought the first half of the album sounded relatively heavy, and the second half less so.
Personally I wish Ed would save this kind of thing for his solo or side projects. The fact that there are slots set aside for this kind of song are disappointing because they rarely land in the top tier of Pearl Jam songs. A true exploration of something more country and gritty ( I am thinking Chris Stapleton) would be welcomed.

+ 1
It sounds like a leftover or unfinished song from earthling, it's only a clip but a clip of can't deny me, get it back, ole, or of the earth destroys this song, just my opinion,...

I don't know. If this were the rule, there probably would have been no "Off He Goes" on No Code. And possibly no "Comes Then Goes" on Gigaton. (I still don't know anyone else in the band plays on that song. In general, if only one band member plays on a song, it probably doesn't belong on a Pearl Jam album. But that's a great song whether it's just Ed or Ed plus Mike or Stone.)
Then you have the case of "Sleeping By Myself," which is a song I really enjoy but would rather it had been left off Lightning Bolt since it was a song we already had as an Ed solo song. The full-band version would have been a good Pearl Jam B-side.
Put in the record that I still get excited for little snippets of new Pearl Jam songs and I won't really know how I feel about them until I've marinated in the album for a couple months

That recording/mixing/mastering of Eddies voice on Backspacer is atrocious though. That ”let it sound like the singer has a severe cold but is also assaulting the listeners eardrums with its harshness” ideal was a choice. And at the same time sounding muffled and echoy like they tried to save a take where Eddie sang off-mike. A by-product of the doubletracking I guess.
Haven’t listened to it for a long while. But that is what I remember. It sounding very off-putting and harsh.
Where is the closeness and warmth from Riot act…

I like this take. I typically think of BS as a worse album than LB because there are fewer songs I like. But I do agree that BS has a more consistent feel to it than LB.

Also if this is the song about his daughters i qould expect a very calm song.
