Did it remind you of Breath and/or SOLAT (or that it could have been from that era) at all, like the guy in the Spin interview said?

It was an incredibly surreal evening, Ed just chilling on the stage floor, singing along playing lots of air drums and pouring Tequila for us, he gave me a beer too...
Oh the album you ask....fucking kick ass! Some real big tunes on there, they played it fucking loud too which as awesome.
The large bottle of tequila was rocking side to side on the stage due to the bass.
Eds daughter was there and he dedicates one of the songs to parents having to let go of their kids, being proud, letting go, loving what you have...touching seeing his love for her whilst she's on the audience.
    What a night!

Yes shot glasses, beer bottle, gig specific t-shirt and pin badge are safe on the train back up to Manchester.
Cannot wait for the Seattle gigs now!
Thanks to my best man Damian for winning the tickets and giving me the most unreal Pearl Jam night ever!

So does the album just play straight through or do they pause in between songs and talk about the songs etc…. Is it set up like a normal stage with a buffer between Ed and the crowd or is Ed mingling amongst the crowd pouring shots and what not.  Is there an opportunity to chat with Ed?  Just curious on how these types of things work.

Ed spoke between some of the songs, not all of them.
He spoke before the album for about 15mins from teenage Cancer trust, the power of music and gun crime.

Ed literally lay on the stage a few feet from us, no barriers nothing, we respected his space and he was so chief having a great time drinking Corona and serving shots.
He engaged with the crowd, Random shout outs etc
He pissed himself laughing when some said his daughter was old enough to drink in the UK and she was now at the bar
Ed had a great time, people near the stage like me and my mate felt like we really engaged with him, it was very cool

No buffer . Just ed on stage sitting cross legged pouring drinks . Left side first half. Right side second half. Not mingling but ed spoke for 20 odd mins before and kept stopping the sound man between songs to chat

Yeah I got to listen to the new record with Ed sitting 3 feet from me and handing me a bottle of beer and a shot, surreal
  • facepollutionfacepollution Posts: 6,834
Surreal is the word! It was hard to fully take the album in with Ed sitting 3 feet away rocking out, pouring tequila shots and handing out beers, but very cool! He really seemed to be having a great time, air drumming/guitaring/singing along, and was putting back the drink!

In terms of the album, I can't really remember enough to give any decent descriptions, but I would say it felt dark in tone, maybe Binaural-ish, but the songs are much more immediate, more melodic. Ed mentioned how impressive Matt's playing was on the record, and he is right, but the bass really stood out to me, some great leads from Mike too. Ed's vocals sound a little more buried in the mix, but he sounded pretty powerful at times and there were some soaring vocals towards the end of some songs.

Obviously it's hard to form an opinion after one listen, but it definitely feels like they've tapped into the energy of their earlier records, without sounding like they're trying to recreate any of them.

I think it depends what people are looking for in a record, I mean even Ten-Vs was a shift stylistically, let alone what came after. Certainly not old school anthemics though if that is what anyone is expecting.

For me this felt a bit more purposeful, like they had tried to write a batch of songs that actually fitted together, rather than just recording at random until they had a record's worth of songs to put out - and in that sense I think it has more in common with their earlier stuff, and the fact that the majority of it is pretty hard rocking.

Most people won’t like half of it is a bold, bold assumption.
although I suppose assuming Pearl Jam
fans will not like something Pearl Jam does is kinda a sucker bet.

Running is kinda WWS-esque but...thats not 'old PJ'.

When someone says 'back to old PJ' I think Vs.

Sounds awesome! Glad you guys had a good time!

Because a lot of people who are fans of this band are past the age where they have an open mind about new music, and they're also at a point in their lives where they won't give it the time they gave to the earlier albums that allowed them to fall in love with those albums. It doesn't even matter what the album sounds like. They'll listen, probably on their phones, not even fully paying attention, and then when they don't feel grabbed by the record right away, they'll go listen to a podcast or screw around on social media.

I mean, there are people on this board who listened to "Running" once and then, rather than giving the song (a song that's 2:19 long, by the way) another listen, immediately came here to say they don't like it.
I gather speed from you fucking with me.

It's not the listening party. It's just the album played once in the dark and then again with visualizers

Wow, this is such an accurate statement.  Well said.  100%.  It’s frustrating hearing so many quick judgements.

Its just my opinion of what I heard and what the people around me said and someone asked my opinion and that is what i felt hearing it , lots of words have been banded around about how it will sound and what it compares to , so thats my view based on the music and how pj fans grade everything and are expecting due to the expectations. Half the album is the harder that we were told but half is soft. If you like soft then you may like 100% .
I could be wrong and i hope everyone loves all of it.
As Ed says he doesn't give a fuck if anyone likes it . So it matters not really
