What I haven't figured out is how to find at least a semblance of balance. I miss being happy. I can only vaguely remember waking up and looking forward to the day with a feeling of dread. I suppose I could just shut everything down on my computer and phone that lets the toxic news of the world bleed into my life. I suppose there are people who can do that. But that's not me. I can forget about all this crap for a little while by watching a movie or listening to music, etc. But the concerns always seep back in so much of the time.
So what about you folks? Do you manage to keep a balance? Do you have joy filled days in which you are able to set aside concerns about what is happening to our country? What are your best coping methods? Maybe I can learn something here, thanks.

Just a suggestion based on personal experience: delete all social media accounts. You don't have to disconnect from all info - it's not like there aren't other sources of info. But Facebook, X, TikTok, etc, are VERY BAD for mental health right now if you're looking at politics. I completely unplugged from social media apps months ago now, and after the first week maybe, I couldn't even imagine going back. I know there are excuses to keep it, but none of them are worth the damage they are doing.
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. ~ Desiderata

Oh man, I hear you. I often find myself seeing things as they are- undeniably awful right now, and seemingly hopeless.
One thing that helps me is to remember a story my father- a WWII vet- told me late in his long life. He once met a man who had lived in Germany during the reign of Hitler and that man felt about his situation much like we feel about things here today. Pop asked the man, "How the hell did you deal with such a horrible situation?" The man told him he just kept going about his business one day at a time and quietly hoped things would change for the letter in his lifetime. And they did.
I try to be the same way. I may be too old to get to see that change, but I do still have hope that eventually things will change for the better, even if I don't live to see it. And one difference- at least for now- is that we are still able to protest and resist. My father's German friend could not do that. He couldn't even talk about resistance except in the most discreet manner among trusted friends.
So yes, I too am guilty as hell of doom scrolling, but I'm also trying to balance that out more by hanging on to a little hope, by remembering that other have been through worse and managed to get through it. I take some time every day to shut out the noise by listening to my favorite music and watching a favorite show or a movie, and by getting out of the house when I can for a walk. I really do think this hellish situation will eventually or at least things will improve.
History is cyclical and it's just a matter of chance where we fall in those cycles. I think it's important to- as the saying goes- keep on keeping on, and don't let things that are beyond our control steal our souls. Keep listening to music, keep experiencing life, share your life where and when you feel like doing so and know you're not alone, and don't let those soulless evil motherfuckers steal your fire or steal your soul.

Yes I've tried that.. but FB keeps me in touch with my friends.. esp those overseas. Not everyone uses what's app but guess I can ask them. Never had TikTok.. deleted X and threads. I need to support the sanctuaries that are struggling to so I keep IG and FB... I'm stuck kinda
