Guess they should all be deported for their antisemitism, eh? And their organizations shuttered for supporting Hamas, eh?

27 Jewish groups file amicus brief expressing concern over detainment of Tufts student

27 Jewish groups filed a brief supporting Tufts student Rümeysa Öztürk, condemning her detention as a misuse of antisemitism to silence free speech and protest.

A group of 27 Jewish organizations and synagogues have filed an amicus brief voicing their support for Rümeysa Öztürk, the detained Tufts University doctoral student, the latest in a string of Jewish voices objecting to her arrest.

The brief calls antisemitism a “persistent scourge” and says that fighting it is “laudable,” but adds, “arresting, detaining, and potentially deporting Öztürk does not assist in eradicating antisemitism.”

It continues, “The government instead appears to be exploiting Jewish Americans’ legitimate concerns about antisemitism as pretext for undermining core pillars of American democracy, the rule of law, and the fundamental rights of free speech and academic debate on which this nation was built.”

Öztürk, a Turkish national and fifth-year doctoral student at Tufts, was arrested by ICE last month while walking on the street. Öztürk had written an op-ed accusing Israel of genocide, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio Rubio defended her detention by arguing that she was a part of a student protest that was “creating a ruckus” and harassing students on campus.

Her detainment was one of a string arrests of pro-Palestinian activists on college campuses, including Mahmoud Khalil, a leader of pro-Palestinian protests at Columbia University who is set to have a pivotal court hearing Friday.

    Revoked visas

The Trump administration has also frozen hundreds of millions of dollars of funding from a string of elite universities. Hundreds of student visas have also been revoked; in many cases the administration has cited the international students’ pro-Palestinian activities and said the actions are part of its fight against antisemitism.

Jewish groups have increasingly voiced concerns about the campus crackdown and its implications for civil liberties. Öztürk’s arrest in particular has sparked objections, including from a pro-Israel student group at Tufts.

The amicus brief said the Trump administration’s crackdown on antisemitism on campuses recalled authoritarian regimes its signatories’ ancestors had left behind.

To watch state authorities undermine the same fundamental rights that empowered so many Jewish Americans is chilling; to know it is being done in the name of the Jewish people is profoundly disturbing,” the brief stated.

Signatories included a range of liberal and progressive Jewish organizations, including the liberal Israel lobby J Street, the liberal rabbinic human rights group T’ruah, the progressive Jewish group Bend the Arc, the Jewish LGBTQ group Keshet, the Reconstructionist Rabbinical Association and congregations in New York City, Los Angeles, the Boston area, San Francisco and Washington D.C.

Perhaps a more effective way of getting your message across rather than setting up a campus encampment. The old saying that the pen is mightier than the sword may hold true.

The UN said on Friday that 36 strikes in Gaza have killed only women and children and hundreds have hit residential buildings and tents since Israel resumed intense strikes on the Palestinian enclave on March 18.

Hey, but if you just write a letter or “peacefully” protest, it’ll all just stop and everything will be fine. Or they should just move. Where you ask? Maybe Palm Beach, Flo-Rida?

And the Secretary of State should not have the power to determine what foreigners living here are a risk to America. Why don’t we just hand the White House to Hamas?

what other freaking country would allow that?  Canada? Hahahaha. The bias is overwhelming in your decisions who to support

take note I can to admit the CECOT deportations are horrible. But in this case, this dude organized hatred against American kids. Since they’re Jews, they have no rights to go to school in peace, no rights to attend their graduation. Police were called to the scene multiple times. Property was destroyed, the protests were not peaceful. Those are the facts.

the only thing going on upstairs with you on who to mock is the color of skin and if they are Jews.  That is bias. Full stop.

The extremist protests are not doing anything other than creating disruption. I spelled it out. Hire a lobbyist and donate to a senator or three. Then you might be able to make to get some traction with your cause. Maybe they could move to Halifax and work the lobster boats. Good wages to be had there. Then they could fund their cause. All kidding aside, US policy is driven by self interested politicians fueled by contributions. If I were to get behind a cause, it would be to take a hard look at our politics, congress, and how policy is made in the US. It is a broken system and the current President is a textbook example of how capitalism runs our federal and local governments. Find a billionaire to support you and you could be President. That is the bigger problem. A real president with balls would end both the Middle East dispute and the Russia/Ukraine war.

Execution? Detainment without charge? Expulsion? After all, they’re admitted friends of Hamas.

Nothing. Because they speak their piece in the proper way as far as I an tell. Supporting a place for the Palestinians does not necessarily equate to support of Hamas. Really? Execution? If that is your position then all of the protesters should have been killed. Ridiculous. But I guess you just apply that thought to the Jews and not Arab protesters.

So what should happen to the Jews and the Jewish organizations that are friends of and in solidarity with the people who wrote editorials and led violent protests against the wanton slaughter and genocide of Palestinians? Execution? Detainment without charge? Expulsion? After all, they’re admitted friends of Hamas.

Nothing. Because they speak their piece in the proper way as far as I a tell. Supporting a place for the Palestinians does not necessarily equate to support of Hamas. Really? Execution? If that is your position then all of the protesters should have been killed. Ridiculous. But I guess you just apply that thought to the Jews and not Arab protesters.
Well, we’ve got posters claiming that any support for Palestinians is support for Hamas. And we have multitudes of Jewish people and organizations supporting Palestine, the Palestinian people and those who support them. Are they exempt from that which is happening to the Muslim/arab/persians/christians/atheists as it relates to punishment and consequences? Seems some are trying to have their cake and eat it to.

The people of Gaza are being executed daily, and they should just move away, while here in ‘Murica kids miss graduation and buildings are vandalized. Was anyone killed during these campus protests? Oh, the horror.

I read the article. Not saying it's fair, but right now if you are here on a visa and you speak out against Israel, you might have a problem. If you are smart enough to be a doctorate student at Tufts, then you should be smart enough to understand the potential consequences of your actions.

US tax dollars fund Israel’s genocide and war crimes against the Palestinians. How thick is that bubble of yours?

Columbia, Harvard, Tufts, Brandeis, etc. etc. have endowments that invest in US corporations and Israeli companies that contribute to that same genocide. So students at those campuses are not allowed to protest their administration’s endowment investment policies? Because Israel? Or because Jewish students find it threatening? Or because the protestors are then viewed as supporting Hamas, a terrorist organization?

What is more threatening to Jewish students? Unite the Right rallies or pro-Palestine demonstrations? Why didn’t COOTWH punish UVA for allowing the unite the right rally and not doing enough to stop anti-semitism? Or is it only brown people who deserve to be punished?

    That bubble is indeed thick.

According to figures compiled by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, aid to Palestinians amounted to more than $40 billion between 1994 and 2020. The largest portion of this assistance (35.4 percent) went to support the PA budget, while the rest was allocated to various services and economic sectors in the Palestinian territories. The bulk of the aid—nearly 72 percent—came from ten donors: the European Union (18.9), the United States (14.2), Saudi Arabia (9.9), Germany (5.8), the United Arab Emirates (5.2), Norway (4.8), United Kingdom (4.3), the World Bank (3.2), Japan (2.9), and France (2.7).

    Non-Arab Donors

Non-Arab donors provided close to 77 percent of all aid for the period in question. Notable donors were:

The European Union:Driven by a desire to help implement the two-state solution and to also address serious socioeconomic needs in Palestinian society, the European Union regularly directs aid to several channels, including the institutions of the PA, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), healthcare and social welfare organizations, and other groups working on humanitarian, educational, and other social issues. Following a partial suspension of funds in 2020—which was intended to force changes in Palestinian educational curricula—the EU releasedthe roughly €215 million in aid that it had been withholding. And on average, the EU provides more than €600 million a year in aid to the Palestinians.

The United States:American aid to the Palestinians has been influenced over the years by the vicissitudes of US-Israeli relations, as well as by the central role Washington has played in steering what little remains of a peace process between Israel and Palestine. Nonetheless, the US is the second largest source of aid to the Palestinians. Following a drastic reduction of American aid during the Trump Administration—which then President Donald Trump attempted to use as leverage to force the Palestinians to accept his so-called “deal of the century” peace plan—the Biden Administration resumed funding in 2021, to the tune of almost $250 million. Importantly, this tranche of aid included $150 million for UNRWA, which provides for millions of Palestinian refugees living both under Israeli control and in neighboring Arab countries. During his recent trip to Palestine, President Joe Biden announced an additional aid package of $316 million, $201 million of which was allocated to UNRWA. A multi-year contribution of $100 million for East Jerusalem hospitals was also included in the package. Although administration officials have emphasized the need to ameliorate the dire economic conditions in Palestine, steps to deal with the issue must also include attention to Palestinians’ political and national rights.

Not really contemporaneous, but that money was designed to keep the peace and build infrastructure. And make no mistake that money was designed to keep Israel in power while giving aid to Palestinians. Keep drinking the kool aid. The US supports Israel because they buy weapons and pay for lobbyists and political campaigns. It is all about money. Perhaps the Palestinians should try that approach instead

A lot different than saying, “oh, wait, ‘no one’ will give them any money. I wonder why that is”, eh?

Icelandic Handball team > @Lerxst1992 and Israel

"We, the players of the Icelandic women's national handball team, believe it is important to share our experience after having played two playoff matches against the Israeli national team this week. It is time for the international sports movement – and sports authorities in Iceland – to reassess their stance on Israel's participation in international competitions while their military operations in Gaza continue.

Playing two international matches against Israel was not an easy decision for us. We were faced with a challenge we had never encountered before: to compete against representatives of a state responsible for the deaths of countless innocent civilians – or to refuse to participate, thus allowing the Israeli team to advance. We chose to play – because we wanted to see the Icelandic flag at the World Championship, not the Israeli one.

It is neither normal nor acceptable for a national team to have to play two matches behind closed doors, arrive under police escort, and worry about their safety both on and off the court. We want to play handball with passion, for our country – but we also want the conditions we are asked to play under to align with the fundamental values of sport: peace, respect, and solidarity. For these values, and the rules of international sports federations intended to uphold them, to retain their meaning, it is fair to ask: Why is Israel still allowed to participate in international competitions?

We urge the Icelandic Handball Association (HSÍ) and the National Olympic and Sports Association of Iceland (ÍSÍ) to share our experience with the relevant international federations and to call for Israel to be banned from international sporting events while their military actions continue. We want our voices to be heard – as sportswomen, as representatives of Iceland, and as human beings. We stand united in the hope that our stance will contribute to changes that reflect the human dignity that sports are meant to represent."

Yes, let’s protest US tax dollars contributing to genocide. Want to make things equal? Give Palestine a well armed military so it can defend itself and $4B in aid per year. The hypocrisy is astounding.

Do not hate the players, hate the game. It seems to me that there were many years of peace in that region. What changed? How do you expect the Israelis to respond? One of the toughest armies in the world. Right because that is hypocrisy and genocide. It is not like they are protecting what they believe is theirs just as the Palestinians are fighting for what they believe is theirs. The problem is that most of the world favors Israel over Palestine. I am not sure that is an accident.

Tell us what the “defeat of Hamas” looks like and what comes after.

Defenders of Israel act as if the nation of Israel has done nothing wrong to the Palestinians living in the West Bank and Gaza and that they’re truly innocent in every thing. Just minding their business, treating Palestinians as equals, not seizing land or homes, imprisoning thousands without charge, restricting movement and committing acts of not only war crimes but genocide. While Palestinians chant “river to the sea” , Israel quietly goes about making it happen. Let’s not pretend these are not truths and let’s not lie about them occurring.

To achieve peace, both sides must be considered part of humanity. I acknowledge Israel’s right to exist. Can you say the same for Palestine?

Nothing good comes from war. And as I said there are no simple solutions to this conflict. Some see Israel as defending what they believe is theirs while others see it as taking something from others. It is not something you and I will resolve here. It is sad and ugly either way. Let's agree on that.

You didn’t answer the question so I’ll take that as a no. Thanks, I now know where you stand and explains a lot.

as long as they are run by a terrorist organization that conducts kamikaze style attacks to kill women and children, how can they exist peacefully? It’s an absurd question.

This current argument has been ongoing for two years for one reason and one reason alone, Palestine initiated an attack because it was not happy with Israel forwarding another peace deal in the region. This time with Saudi Arabia

And if people wanna throw out the ridiculous fake attacks of genocide, defend that baseless attack with why there are not 100 million Jews living in that region right now.

    It’s a one-word answer. Why don’t you give it a try

The US supports Israel because they buy weapons and pay for lobbyists and political campaigns. It is all about money. Perhaps the Palestinians should try that approach instead

they dont buy our weapons. they are GIVEN those weapons
