Wasn't he already under some sort of scrutiny for tax avoidance? It just seems like they haven't found anything new here other than the "false statement" about a gun purchase.

Which, given free speech and the 2A shouldn’t be a crime. And if terrorists can own guns, why not felons. Felons can’t vote but better be damned right that they should and can protect their castle, unless they owned a laptop or something?

All of his “crimes” are ok if he was a Republican to republicans so I agree. None of it is about crimes.  The fact crimes are selectively an issue is a problem.

tax issues, really? Who also doesn’t pay taxes?

a president is somehow responsible because he is in close proximity to criminals?

Guns? If there shouldn’t be any restrictions anyway there is no issue

We should not let any of them off the hook no matter if we are part of their base or the opposition

But keep in mind that tRump's DOJ had that laptop and were unable to do anything with it. All we have is a report that he didn't report some income (which came out a long time ago and he has since filed amended returns, etc.) and that there are chargeable offenses related to that and a gun purchase.

Big fucking deal. This is nothing compared to what the GOP suggested it would be i.e. the Biden crime family

Inside Hunter Biden’s multimillion-dollar deals with a Chinese energy company  https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/03/30/hunter-biden-china-laptop/

Inside Hunter Biden’s multimillion-dollar deals with a Chinese energy company
By Matt Viser, Tom Hamburger and Craig Timberg
    March 30, 2022 at 11:04 ET
The deal was years in the making, the culmination of forging contacts, hosting dinners, of flights to and from China. But on Aug. 2, 2017, signatures were quickly affixed, one from Hunter Biden, the other from a Chinese executive named Gongwen Dong.
Within days, a new Cathay Bank account was created. Within a week, millions of dollars started to change hands.
Within a year, it would all begin to collapse.
While many aspects of Hunter Biden’s financial arrangement with CEFC China Energy have been previously reported and were included in a Republican-led Senate report from 2020, a Washington Post review confirmed many of the key details and found additional documents showing Biden family interactions with Chinese executives.
Over the course of 14 months, the Chinese energy conglomerate and its executives paid $4.8 million to entities controlled by Hunter Biden and his uncle, according to government records, court documents and newly disclosed bank statements, as well as emails contained on a copy of a laptop hard drive that purportedly once belonged to Hunter Biden.
The Post did not find evidence that Joe Biden personally benefited from or knew details about the transactions with CEFC, which took place after he had left the vice presidency and before he announced his intentions to run for the White House in 2020.
But the new documents — which include a signed copy of a $1 million legal retainer, emails related to the wire transfers, and $3.8 million in consulting fees that are confirmed in new bank records and agreements signed by Hunter Biden — illustrate the ways in which his family profited from relationships built over Joe Biden’s decades in public service.
Hunter Biden’s overseas work has been the subject of heightened scrutiny. He has been under federal investigation as part of an inquiry into his taxes, with witnesses called before a grand jury as recently as last month. Federal prosecutors had been attempting to determine if he failed to account for income from China-related deals, The Post has previously reported, although it is unclear whether that is still a focus. Republicans, meanwhile, have pointed to the Biden family’s business deals in China, along with Hunter Biden’s past membership on the board of the Ukrainian energy firm Burisma, as potential conflicts of interest.

Prosecutors near charging decision in Hunter Biden case
By Devlin Barrett, Matt Viser, Josh Dawsey and Perry Stein
    May 03, 2023 at 13:57 ET
Prosecutors are nearing a decision on whether to charge President Biden’s son Hunter with tax- and gun-related violations, according to people familiar with the matter, the culmination of a four-year investigation that Republicans have sought to portray as evidence the Biden family is corrupt.
Biden’s attorneys met at Justice Department headquarters in downtown Washington last week to discuss the case with U.S. Attorney David Weiss of Delaware, according to the people familiar with the matter, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing criminal investigation. Typically, that sort of meeting — in which defense lawyers urge prosecutors not to seek an indictment of their client, or to seek reduced charges — comes toward the end of an investigation.
The people familiar with the matter said Weiss is nearing the end of his decision-making process, although they offered no specific timetable. They cautioned that the probe has taken longer than some officials thought it would, frustrating some law enforcement officials, and conceivably could slow down again before a decision has been reached.
Any decision could have a significant impact on President Biden, who just launched his reelection campaign, bringing national attention to a sensitive topic that aides often struggle to broach with the president. Republicans seeking to win back the White House have sought to tie Hunter Biden’s legal woes directly to his father.
Attorney General Merrick Garland has told Congress that the department’s decisions in the case would not be politicized and has said that he has granted Weiss — a holdover from the Trump administration — complete authority to run the investigation.
Garland reiterated that stance Tuesday at a news conference on an unrelated matter, telling reporters who asked about the status of the investigation: “I stand by my testimony, and I refer you to the U.S. attorney for the District of Delaware, who is in charge of this case and capable of making any decisions that he feels are appropriate.”
