Couldn’t have put it better. I was fortunate enough to catch him live a couple of times. Such an amazing voice. RIP.

The Winding Sheet is such a criminally underrated album.

Sweet Oblivion an absolute gem of an album. That guy’s baritone voice was timeless. Julie Paradise an all-time fav.

I am selfishly angry & upset. Rest in Pieces, Mark. Arguably. the most underrated singer in rock for the last 30 years.

When the willow bends towards the end of day
    And twilight falls again
To the funny sound that a blackbird makes
    Twilight falls again

As no good reason remains, I'll do the same
    Thinking of you
One day a ship comes in, one day a ship comes in
But I can't say how or when
But I know somewhere the ship comes in every day

There is no morphine, I'm only sleeping
There is no crime to dreams like this
And if you could take something with you
It would be right, something good
From my fingertips, the cigarette throws ashes to the ground
I'd stop and talk to the girls who work this street
But I got business farther down
Like one long season of rain
I will remain thinking of you

  • Such sad news, but having just finished reading “Devil in a Coma” not surprising.
We are all lucky Mark was so productive in recent years, & there’s such a wealth of music & words to delve into across his life.

His solo albums are a constant on my turntable but never more than today. His cover of AIC’s Nutshell for MOPop last year was just amazing. I’ll have to watch that again tonight.

I love Mad Season, and I was truly grateful that Mark put the finishing touches on Locomotive and Black Book of Fear. Additions to album reissues often don't get much credit, but those were solid songs. RIP.

It amazes me how much of his influence is all through my record collection.  Solo, ST, Mad Season, QOTSA, The Gutter Twins.  I know he even did some stuff with Moby and many others. He will be greatly missed.

Would have loved a new Mad Season album with Mark on vocals.

What I posted to my social media yesterday:
<<Sad to see the news that Mark Lanegan died today. As often happens with favorite artists, I found his music at the right time when his songs hit the right notes with me personally, at their most relatable. "River Rise" and "House a Home" were a couple songs that I played over and over on my Walkman while on Amtrak trips up the Hudson River on my way back to college as I gazed out the train window at derelict factories and ruined houses.
    .
Lanegan's name often has been criminally absent from discussions of the giants of the "Seattle scene", and already it feels like he'll be more renowned in death than in life. I'd long ago brought his albums Scraps at Midnight (1998, with my favorite album artwork) and Whiskey for the Holy Ghost (1996, pretty much his best album) with me on to my proverbial Desert Island, playing them all this time as much as I have listened to Pearl Jam's No Code and Yield albums. And as great as his early albums were, Lanegan remained prolific right until the end, having released an album in October.
    .
Most write-ups will mention Lanegan's "grunge" era in Screaming Trees, and his numerous later-career collaborations. Lanegan's cover songs also rank among his best work. Eddie Floyd's "Consider Me" and Buck Owens's "Together Again" are standout tracks from I'll Take Care of You (1999). Dig deep beyond his own albums for spectacular covers of Willie Nelson "She's Not for You" and appropriately for today, Charlie Rich's "Feel Like Going Home." RIP, Dark Mark. Hope you found the Light.
    >>

It was nice to hear Ed's acknowledgement at the show last night (posted in the other thread). I got the sense that Ed and Mark didn't run in the same circles, though I believe Mike was close to Lanegan at one point (I think he is mentioned in Lanegan's book). Good of Ed to pay tribute.
