i have 10 days off coming up and, in order to avoid being driven nuts by my family, i decided i needed a project or 8.

so i ordered 4 pedal kits from the canadian BYOC distributor (buy 3 get a free tremolo).

so i have coming:

a mouse (3 way RAT)
http://buildyourownclone.com/rat.html

a beaver (triangle muff)
http://buildyourownclone.com/largebeaver.html

an envelope filter (DOD 440)
http://buildyourownclone.com/envelope.html

and the tremolo
http://buildyourownclone.com/trem.html

that should keep me busy.

oh man I have wanted an envelope filter for a while.
My Girlfriend said to me..."How many guitars do you need?" and I replied...."How many pairs of shoes do you need?" She got really quiet.

Whatever happen to that CD you were working on?

I'd love to see the top of their PC boards so I could make my own.
I'd be interested in building the compressor, 250+, and delay.

That's cool. I was hoping to do a BYOC Triboost, Fuzz, and Delay at some point (money and time providing).

Burned out! Yep been there. Was at that point last week, when sitting behind the board doing mix down. So we are going to take the next couple weeks and just jam on some new stuff, then get back in to wrap up the EP.

It's fun, but yet stressful. It will be worth it in the end though.

Good luck on your projects. Very cool indeed!

it's just my life, my job, family etc. have decimated any creativity i once had. i don't really have anything to write about. i don't have any confidence either.

i have 15 songs done, most without lyrics and i just don't like any of them.

but i don't really have a goal with music which would probably help. if i was driving to something maybe but i just do it as a hobby and therefore there's no drive to finish anything.

i do enjoy it. it's just a lull right now.

well, the instructions on the site have pretty clear shots of the layout. maybe not all the traces though.

there are other DIY sites with layouts for etching your own PCBs though.

I go in and out of that everyday. I've gone over year without coming up with anything to be honest, then out of know where I get two songs written in two days. It's the way it goes. Don't put a deadline on yourself or even a "direction". I'd say do what sounds good at the moment. Doesn't matter what it turns out like, it's all about fun.

We started recording thing back in October of 05 (I believe). And we are just now at the mixing stage. Of course we have recorded, rerecorded, re-rerecorded, deleted, ignored etc... The entire time it never felt like a job. Last week it finally felt like a job, and I spoke up. So we all decided to stay away from the mix for a while and work on having some fun.

That's sweet, like a month ago I ordered two kits from that same site, the 250+ and octafuzz. I built the 250 like a week ago, haven't gotten around to building the octafuzz yet but I probably will within the next week.
It's a fun little hobby, although I'll admit at times I was pretty frustrated and found myself saying 'why am I doing this', but plugging it in and watching that led light up for the first time makes it all worth while.
Are these the first pedals you're building?
Be sure to post pics when you're done.

i've done lots of modifications to other pedals and built lots of switchers and things but these will be my first from the ground up pedals.

i'm looking forward to the builds. but not the box painting. i have lots of ideas but i don't think i can execute them. we'll see.

    I'd love to build one.

    Do they actually sound ok?

from all accounts, yes, they're very good sonically.

The 250 overdrive I built is their cheapest, simplest, lowest component part count, and smallest pedal and I think it sounds great. I knew someone who built the phaser and said it sounds better than the phase 90 it's cloned after. They use better quality parts than most mass-produced factory pedals, plus you can experiment modifying them, not to mention they're all true-bypass unlike almost all brand name pedals out there today.
There's video clips for a few pedals on their site if you'd like to hear them.

Do it rat rod style, leave it like it is (bare metal), or get a can of primer (three colors to pick from!). Clear coat the primer if you want.

the most likely option is a sharpie and clearcoat probably. though i might polish the boxes a bit.

i'd love to do full colour stuff but, without the expense of getting like custom stickers made, i'm not sure how to do it. i can't silkscreen anything.

i'm wondering if i can print something on photopaper with a colour laser printer, put a layer of film overtop and then clearcoat.

i'd love to try etching but don't have a workspace to execute playing with acid safely.

i'm also toying with tinfoil ideas.

Let me know what you end up doing for printing and how it works out. I'm also trying to find a good way for printing on my boxes.

this is pretty obvious for a 440 clone.

I know my town has a local custom sign/ sticker place. bring them in a file of what I want, and they print it how I want. Usually not hat bad of a price.

It's going to take a lot of clear coat that's for sure.

oh yeah, a vinyl sticker would pretty much be suitable on it's own and would look good.

effector13 did that with all their stuff.

Actually they more then vinyl there. They can do individual stuff, sheet stuff etc... Some takes longer then others of course.

If I ever do the fuzz kit, I'll end up just using a cool can of primer, spray it. Sand it, label it with a thin brush, then clear coat it.

I've done the rubbing transfer thing a lot.
A lot of local art stores have rubbing transfers (I use the lettering).
They only take two or three layers of lacquer to cover, and look really professional when done.
I'm sure you could find pictures in that format as well.

Sorry to hear that. I think the fact that you are such a pedal freak shows in your music with some of the distinctive sounds you get on your chords.

it just occured to me that i could get the graphics printed onto clear plastic label paper at staples or whatever and then clear coat overtop to protect it a bit.

I tried that today. I went to officemax, bought some clear full sheet labels, went into photoshop and designed everything, printed it and put it on over the paint. Then used two coats of clear coat enamel on top of that.
    2005261008507518983_rs.jpg
it worked pretty well, some minor imperfections in the paint show up more once there's a sticker on it but they aren't noticeable unless you're a few feet away -- plus it's a pedal, it's gonna be taking abuse. My only complaint is those labels are expensive, about $22 for 25 sheets.
Although I just did text, I don't know how it'd work for full graphics like you're doing.
  • how easy are these to assemble? All I have is a little bit of high school electronics...I really want the tube screamer

I had no electronics experience other than being able to solder and both my kits worked properly.
There's step-by-step instructions you can print off their site. As long as you read, it's pretty hard to mess up. It tells you where each component goes, plus the board has text silk screened on it that also tells you where each component goes.
Wiring is a little more difficult in that you have such a small area to work in. But as long as you take your time you should be fine, especially if you've taken an electronics course.
Assembly of the enclosure is a cinch, pretty hard to mess that up.

well, it looks like canada post delivered the package to points unknown so i guess the project is off.

i hope i get my money back.

the dealer insured the parcel but didn't put a signature requirement on it so what's the point of insurance?
