I think you also have to factor in how many people have been infected recently, and if they were, they are advised not to get another booster for up to 6 months post-infection. And then they might forget to get the booster once that time period passes.
More like three months, but I think that only accounts for a small number of the abstainers.
I gather speed from you fucking with me.

Does the NHS promote the availability of the boosters?

The three-months recommendation is per the CDC:

    People who recently had COVID-19

    • People who recently had COVID-19 may delay getting a COVID-19 vaccine for 3 months.
      • The risk of getting COVID-19 is less likely in the weeks to months following a SARS-CoV-2 infection.
        • Certain factors could be reasons to get a vaccine sooner rather than later, such as:

You're both right. As a healthcare professional, I would weigh lots of of different things.

I'm pretty sure I had covid back in June (was traveling with no access to testing), recovered quickly. Last month, my wife tested positive and despite plenty of personal exposure, I obviously didn't get sick.

I'll probably wait until Xmas/after the new year for the booster. Our students will be back from holiday vacation and if we'd have another spike, it'll be sometime between then and the summer I'd wager. My booster should cover until the then.

Ymmv and always consult with your own physician.

For the poster seeking differences between those blue, high tax states and those red, low tax states, here’s a stat for you. Maybe they should live a healthier lifestyle?

Mortality in the United States varies widely by state (1). This report compares average age-adjusted death rates by sex, race and ethnicity, and five leading causes of death between a group of five states with the highest age-adjusted death rates (Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi, Oklahoma, and West Virginia) and a group of five states with the lowest age-adjusted death rates (California, Connecticut, Hawaii, Minnesota, and New York) in 2017 (2). Age-specific death rates for the two groups are presented as well.

You are so wrong. First of all, in the ten years from 2010-19, the flu killed between 12,000 and 61,000 Americans annually. COVID-19 killed over 300,000 Americans in each of the years 2020, 2021 and 2022. Even since last October, with the population enjoying increased immunity from vaccinations as well as infections, COVID has still killed nearly twice as many Americans as the flu (49,000 to 25,000), with the vast majority of those deaths among the unvaccinated. COVID was and is much more dangerous and contagious than the flu which, incidentally, is also a viral respiratory disease where an annual vaccine booster is recommended, a practice which was uncontroversial until a bunch of bad actors decided to politicize vaccines.

The original draft of my post had a part at the end that acknowledged that the person being responded to is not likely to accept these facts, but that I offered them because there are other folks who are open-minded and may not realize the significant differences between the flu and COVID.

I don't even know where to begin with these threads anymore.

Husband and I are getting the updated Covid vaccine this week; it won't do much to protect us during the Philly shows, so I'll still be masking, but here we are.

The Covid vaccine, like the flu vaccine, is not meant to prevent everyone -- or anyone -- from being infected. These vaccines are intended to protect from SEVERE illness -- you know, the kind that leaves you hospitalized or dead. These vaccines make one *less likely* to be infected, which reduces the spread of illness to people who are immunocompromised, very old, very young, etc. [And a big "f-- you" to all the people devoid of empathy who say "Sure, people will die, but it's mostly old people." One day, if you're lucky, you, too, will be an old person.]

It's already shocking that we decided that losing tens of thousands of people to the flu each year is an acceptable loss of life.

The victim blaming is gross. Eat right, lose weight, and exercise, huh? That's all it takes? Interesting.

I train -- and look -- like an elite athlete (despite having no visible athletic ability whatsoever). I train an average of three hours per day, have less than 15% body fat (I'm female), eat clean, don't smoke or do drugs, drink in moderation. I also had to get the pneumonia vaccine when I was ~45 because a simple cold can leave me sick for months. When my husband gave me Covid for Valentine's Day last year, I lost three weeks and half of my hair to it.

Oh! And this year was the year I got cancer, despite doing all the right things. As it turns out, cancer doesn't give a rat's ass how many miles I ran last year.

Eating right and staying active are smart things for everyone to do. They stack the odds in your favor. But they don't guarantee a damn thing.
Why on earth would you make a bunch of other smart lifestyle choices and then turn around, when a free vaccine is offered to boost your odds, and say, "nah, I'm good"?!?

            From the CDC release:
Missouri DHSS reports that the patient, who was hospitalized, had underlying medical conditions, was treated with influenza antiviral medications, subsequently discharged, and has recovered. There is no immediate known animal exposure. No ongoing transmission among close contacts or otherwise has been identified.

Kudos to the attending for sending this one off, and looking forward to Missouri DHSS tracing to figure out the point of exposure. Unless this person was already in a skilled nursing facility, there's going to be some overlooked/unexpected animal exposure, I'm betting, otherwise they'd have sorted out a link to someone with primary exposure already. They also haven't ID'd the N subtype, which might suggest it's not N1...🤔
