Hey Foxymophandlemama, That's Me (SOURCE FOUND)

I've been searching for this for like 20 years. And tonight, a great man on Reddit pointed me to it. It's from a 1986 documentary called A Matter of the Mind. It's an interesting and rather sad look at some mental health patients. All the samples from the track are in the video. The samples begin at 29:12 and are throughout thereafter.

Some timestamps:

"My spanking...." 29:12
"They've got the nerve to bug me"/"Everything seems so hateful" 36:00
"Hey Foxymophandlemama, that's me" 38:25
"Come on, mop. Quit steaking mop" 38:50
"Dumb old sponge mop"/Now the floor looks beautiful!"/That's why they call me Mophandlemama" 39:12
The end of the track 51:55

Dude, my mind is blown. This was a white whale for me. Like everyone, I don't listen to Stupid Mop every time I listen to Vitalogy. But whenever I do listen to it, my interest in it always reemerges. So I started scouring the internet for some info and came across a Reddit post from four years ago where a guy was really on the hunt for the source. So I messaged him asking if he found anything in the past four years, and he messaged me back like ten minutes later with a link!

Cool. I always thought that voice was a little girl. Seems like a local/low budget video, kind of curious how the band came across it and how the song came together.

Well we know Eddie taped it off television well before joining PJ. I’d be curious to know about the instrumentation. Obviously Jack is on drums cause the liner notes say he is. That one riff in the middle sounds like Eddie but I’m not positive. And I’m not sure if Stone and Mike are even on it.

Some douche on the Red Mosquito board was snarky with me yesterday cause I posted this there as well and he was like “sorry to tell you but this was posted 6 months ago.” But it seems like a lot of people, including myself, Demetrios who is on top of everything, and pearljamonline which is a great site, didn’t know about it. So I’m happy I posted it.

And it was only posted on RM in a comment. This deserves it’s own thread.

Thanks for the shoutout but the real hero here is the fellow on Reddit that pointed it out to me. He made a post asking four years ago trying to find answers, and he had done some research himself at the time. So after coming across that post, I messaged him and he got back to me within 10 minutes with a link. I don’t want to share his Reddit username because he might not want that and he didn’t seem too interested in credit. But I’m real thankful to him. The internet can be great sometimes.

Was this a pbs frontline? Once I saw the countdown from 10 I got impatient and skipped a minute or 2 and missed the intro. It just looked like a low budget film to me. But guess that was everything on tv  in the 80s.

I also realize I’ve had some “lyrics” wrong all these years. I thought “everything seems so hateful” was “8-ball” instead of “hateful,” and I thought “she prides herself on her cleaning talents” was “cleaning habits”

Actually would make more sense to me if they weren't on it. Just Ed putting some small weird music to some odd quotes.

Oh... I did.  The social media post and the opening paragraph of the article are kinda misleading, no? Why use the words “we found”?

Why not post an article saying “we found the source of radioactivity” and put a line at the end that says, “Thanks to Marie Curie.”

The funny thing here is looking through that thread, I made the very next comment after the person that identified it, but I was responding to someone else and didn’t notice the comment identifying it. Or maybe I did notice it and searched for the documentary and couldn’t find it at the time. Who knows.

In 2009 it probably wasn't available online even if you knew the name to search for it. YouTube was only a few years old at the time. The only version I see was uploaded in 2019. I doubt the local blockbuster had a copy to rent. So was probably next to impossible back then to watch it.

I only listen to the song maybe once every couple years at this point. I've often wondered about the documentary but never searched for it. I'm glad you found and posted it. I'm a little surprised when I search the title now and see it under IMDB and other sources theres no mention of Pearl Jam using any clips.

Yeah I still should have noted the name of the documentary (even though that 2009 post doesn't have the title exactly right). Like you and everyone else, I only listen to it once in a blue moon, but when I do, I become overly interested in it. I can't believe I actually know what the Foxymophandlemama looks like now. I almost posted a screenshot of her on the PJ facebook page with a caption "THE Mophandlemama" but I felt that might be exploitive.

It's also interesting to learn that it's not the same same woman talking throughout the entire track, which I figured it was.
