both are deep but I think for me it depends on what mood i am in
Breathe is awesome when I am thinking about life........
when I am thinking about how we come into it (as the beginning implies)
and then what we make of it on our own ("can't expect to go out with
anything more")
State of Love and Trust when I am realizing that no matter how my circumstances of life are at the time, no matter if I am with a guy or have kids or family or whatever, I am still alone and there is such a weird strength in that feeling; being alone and not caring and feeling that feeling that you are strongest when you do not expect anything from anyone and are not waiting for anything from anyone......"And I listen--for the voice inside my head---Nothing!!!!! I'll do this one myself!!" so cool. so true....
Baby, You Wouldn't Last a Minute on The Creek......
Together we will float like angels.........
In the moment that you left the room, the album started skipping, goodbye to beauty shared with the ones that you love.........
...and every PJ album has a better one-two punch than this...

Tough call. I guess I'd go with Breath. ...i think
"...Never take it seriously. You never take it seriously, you never get hurt; you never get hurt, you always fun; and if you ever get lonely, just go to the record store, and visit your friends."

Totally Disagree... maybe Ten with Black and Alive. but I'd say not even my favorite album, Vs., has a better 2 songs than Breath and State of Love and Trust. You'd have an awfully hard time convincing me that Binaural and Riot Act have a better pair of songs. Not knocking those albums, but give me a break.
Alive and Black
Why Go and Porch
Go and Animal
Blood and Indifference
Last Exit and Spin The Black Circle
Corduroy and Immortality
Sometimes and Hail Hail
Smile and Off He Goes
No Way and Faithful
Do The Evolition and Given To Fly
Grievance and Rival
Nothing As It Seems and Sleight Of Hand
Save You and Cropduster
1/2 Full and All Or None
Life Wasted and World Wide Suicide
Comatose and Severed Hand
Basically any two songs off any album. Breath and State are B-sides. They are, by definition, not good enough to be included on an album. Don't get me wrong, I love them both, but it's not like they're the two best songs ever. They're a nice additon to the catalog.

Breath hits me pretty hard both lyrically and musically. I can't get enough of it, I think the words soar throughout the whole song (and Ed is on top of his game here!) and then Mike's solo at the end just lays down an ass whooping that doesn't let up til' it's over! My vote is for Breath!

Just because they are B-sides doesn't mean they aren't good enough to be included on an album. By your logic, the best songs on every album would be the ones that became singles. It's like saying the songs that didn't become singles weren't "good enough" to be singles. I think Breath and State are two of the bands best songs, but that's just opinion.

PS. 1/2 full sucks, and that's fact.
No Pearl Jam song sucks-now that's a fact!
I think singles are a little different. The band might choose the first one, but the the record company picks the rest. Nothing to do with quality.

I like how you went from "Breath and State are two of the band's best songs, but that's just opinion" to "1/2 Full sucks and that's fact..."
I'm hoping there's some sort of sarcasm smiley missing after "fact"...
Smokey Robinson constantly looks like he's trying to act natural after being accused of farting.
At first, I was more a fan of SOLAT. After a while though, Breath took the lead... by leaps and bounds. It helped me through some difficult times. When I hear it start to build, I can't help but smile.
breath for me....and I know this is not the popular opinion, but from time to time I get tired of SOLAT. (Disclaimer #1---I am in no way, shape or form saying the song sucks.) It's a great song, but one that I have heard a lot in my years. If I had to choose which one I would want to see live it would be breath. It would make me smile/cry and would probably just make the show just that much better for me. (yet another disclaimer.....any Pearl Jam show is a great thing. You all know that certain songs just bring it to that next level.)

one-two punch doesn't mean the songs have to be in order on the album.
