facebook, like I said, I agree with dignin, it can be a shithole for sure. I left it a long time ago because i got caught up in using it the way they intended. I recently went back as a favourite band of mine opened a fan forum there where other fans can trade bootlegs, merch, stories, etc. so i opened another account. but i'm not "friending" anyone.
but regardless, i know tonnes of people that only use it for entertainment purposes, stay in touch with people who are far away; those people see it as a positive experience.
so i'm not sure what the big deal is.

What the fuck does that have to do with anything? My hate of faceidiot isn't that they sell info or invade privacy.
Facebook sucks.
You suck if you think PearlJam.com is facebook. Bigly.
Also - I don't need to "hold some type of superiority" over people who use "newsflash" to try and announce some silly witticism.
i edited my comment because i knew how it would be taken.
but the sentiment remains the same. i see people all over the place claiming some type of superiority because they've never had a facebook account, usually for two reasons:
1) privacy 2) it's a cesspool
with regards to number 1, like I said, that's nonsense. your privacy was gone the first time you logged onto anything on the internet. bought anything off amazon. opened a gmail account. anything. 2) we're on the political section of a rock band's website where some people spend a lot of their time (their right) arguing with strangers. no different than facebook.
at least people on facebook don't pay to argue.
I suck if I think pearl jam.com is the same as facebook? first, I didn't say they are the same. but fabulous comment nonetheless. so many peachy people around here these days.
If that is the way you see it I cannot really make any headway. There are lots of differences between facebook and PearlJam.com.
I value the relationships I have made here too much to respond in any honest way other than to just say "good night". There is very real censorship here in a public forum, and while I am totally fine with that, it does on occasion certainly limit the things we might say to one another vs. the way we might speak in person. (Edited for spelling.)

where did i say all of pj.com is the same as facebook? i didn't.
i said aspects of amt are no different than some aspects of facebook, or any social media, depending on how you choose to use it. like it or not, this is social media. there are many people out there that hold the same opinion of places like this that you hold of facebook and other places you seem to have issues with.

Are we peach shaming now? Wish they’d learn how to grow them without the pits.
Keep the fuzz!
Best peaches I ever eat were purchased from a roadside stand at the entrance to the Blue Ridge Parkway, on our way to Monticello. See a sign that said “Peaches $10,” and a table with bags of peaches and a coffee can honor pay station. Hear country music on a little radio, look around and see an old guy in an old chair sitting under a tree watching us. Put $10.00 in the can, grab a bag and hop back in the car and off we go. Started eating peaches but these had about 2” of fuzz on ‘em and the juice ran down to our elbows. Best damn peaches I ever eat but they still had pits. Life was simpler pre-covid.

Attorneys general from Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina and South Dakota did not join the lawsuit.
...wondeR why...
Freedumb.
I have never spent a second on it, have never opened an account and hate those “log in with faceturd” sign in thingies. I haven’t read up on the lawsuit or issues because I’m not personally affected, as far as I know and if I am, I can’t control the outcome. It’ll be what it’ll be. I do find it interesting that people scream about privacy but post every brain fart, picture, thought, basically everything about their lives, health conditions, you name it, and then complain about big gubmint and privacy. Their “privacy” has been sliced and diced a million ways to Sunday and sold to anyone willing to pay.
I’m not sure it has a monopoly as what’s stopping someone from creating a competitive platform that all the cool kids will migrate to? And who cares?
Me neither, in terms of Facebook, Twitter, etc.
As to the bolded part - amen, brother!
South Park had a fantastic episode about the boldfaced topic - it was so spot on.

I don’t get the hate for FB. It’s exactly what you make it. If you don’t like the posts people make and the cesspool it’s become, well, you followed those people.
I was one of the last in my circle to join. Had no interest, but living in Venice Beach/LA in my 20s that’s how people communicated, so I joined to get updates on our happy hour groups and so on. Had zero desire to post and read posts.
But now I actually enjoy that. I’m 20 years out from high school, 15 years from college, and in another state now, it’s harder to keep up with people I was friends with 10 years ago. It’s fun to see who just had a kid, married (or remarried at this point). Before I was still in town, only a few years out from HS or college and was easy to keep up and even bump into people on occasion. Now that never happens.
But I only have about 200 friends on FB. Some have 5,000 or more. I’m convinced those people wouldn’t even recognize their “friends” if they ran into them on the street. I don’t follow people that annoy me. One exception being this lady who posted every day encouraging the looting and riots in the summer and promoting violence against the police, and said destroying businesses and rioting is the only way to get your voice heard and get change. Knowing she was a small business owner herself I eventually got tired and replied just saying she should offer up the address of her business for support. She unfriended me.
Point being, Facebook is only as bad as you let it be.

I guess FaceTime is okay if you don’t mind being a commodity for ad revenue. I have ethical reasons for not supporting them. Have you seen the documentary “Social Dilemma”?
I go on Facebook a handful of times a year, & it’s the same shit over & over so I don’t bother with it much. I only keep the account open for the messenger which I use to stay in touch w/ family overseas.
I did find it odd the one time that I clicked on my Facebook tv feed and there were several Charlie Kirk videos queued up. I don’t have much political stuff if any on my wall or in my likes... & I’ve never clicked on right wing videos or articles that would suggest I’m into that sort of content, so I was genuinely curious as to why those videos were being suggested for me. If anything it should have suggested concert videos as all I ever used to post about was music.

You don’t need a Facebook account to have them collect and sell your data. Do you avoid shopping on Amazon or just doing a Google search?

Facebook goes a bit above and beyond in that department. And I’m not just talking unethical on an individual basis, but in the way that they assign personality profiles to directly bombard people with whatever the AI determines will get the most clicks, whether it is detrimental or not. They actively work to manipulate people regardless of whether or not it causes people to fight more or spread false information. If you haven’t seen “Social Dilemma”, watch it and let me know what you think.
And yes, I search Amazon and Google with add trackers blocked and a VPN active in order to prevent that type of targeted tracking...everyone should.

They have access to your phone or computer, all of it. If you're on the AMT discussing something political, they know it.
They're even hooked into the microphone. I've had every app shut down while having a person-to-person conversation, and as soon as I got back online, the ads were relevant to the offline conversation I was having.
I struggle with the privacy thing. I wonder what happens when this power ends up in the wrong hands. It seems relatively harmless as it is, but it's not guaranteed to stay that way. Remember the technology in 1984 is the TV that looks inside everyone's homes to track compliance.
I have not seen Social Dilemma but the novel, The Circle by Dave Eggers, really made me think hard about the topic.

Lol yes. Firefox with privacy blockers as well as not doing business with Amazon or Walmart and trying to do as little outside of this forum and work related things on the net as possible

Yeah, but I don’t have the app on my phone at all, nor do I have it open in safari.
Every 4-6 weeks I either login from my work pc, or get the app on my phone, but once I’m done I log out / delete the app.
Even if I did, there’s nothing in my habits to suggest Facebook should think I’m interested in Charlie Kirk’s content. Maybe they were simply featuring the most popular videos of the day, idk, but it seemed odd.

Yes it is odd. There is a guy in my feed on Twitter that posts the top 10 facebook activities every once in awhile.
It's generally a combo of Dan Bongino, Kirk, Shapiro, Mark Levin.
