I didn't really have a take on it. Like I've been saying, I'm absolutely horrible when it comes to interpreting lyrics and understanding what the writer is trying to say. I guess the only person who will truly and exactly understand what the lyrics are about is Ed.
Sorry is the fool who trades his soul for a corvette, thinks he'll get the girl he'll only get the mechanic...
Interesting thread. I dont know how much of that is true (and even so if, so what) but you also have to know songwriters are storytellers and they dont always write just about their own lives. Ithink sometimes it cud just be an idea from somewhere....
Was Eddie's mother actually factually mentally ill? anybody know?

no idea...and no idea of how much of the shit on here is true...for some reason, i have a feeling as tho a lot is untrue.
However, I thought that Alive was about ed's life...who knows

Well, if you must know the band of Mike, Stone, Jeff and Dave Kusken (sp?) sent a tape of instrumental music to Eddie, via Jack Irons, who was good friends with Ed. Ed created MAMASAN. It contains the songs, Alive, Once and Footsteps. Alive creates the story of the boy being seduced by his mentally ill mother, Once has him going crazy himself ( Once, upon a time, I could control myself...) and Footsteps has him on Death Row contemplating how his life ended up ( I've got scratches all over my arms, one for each pain since I fell appart...)
He completely got the idea from The Who.
Was basically hired on the spot.
I could be wrong but I thought it was actually matt cameron that played on that first demo.

it was matt.
it was because of that, i thought that it was nice karma when he did end up joining pearl jam.
i always believed that alive was about the time in his life when his mother told him that the man he thought was his dad wasn't. and that the man that was his father was dead. mind you eddie did know his real father, just not as his dad. the middle part supposedly about the mother coming to the son. i find it too disturbing to even think about. if in fact that's what it's about. and as far as karen vedder being crazy. i don't think so. i've never heard that.
i think the whole song is about getting through the bullshit that comes your way growing up and coming through the other side stronger(and alive) for it.
asking if you deserve to be alive. and who will answer that question?
the only answer is YOU. only YOU can decide if you deserve to alive. and of course the answer is YES.

Personally, I have no idea an I am just fine with that.
I've always thought the best art is informed by an artist's experiences and observations, but are usually not the actual life of the artist. Great art comes from more than one place. I could re-draft something I blogged about art, but I'm lazy so I'll cut and paste it in another thread.

Not to be confused with Mr. Eco from Lost.

I think that most of the time people seem to think that they know a song because of personal attachment.
Silly...
I like the fact that they are open to interpretation...

Tell them you love them. Never let the mundane, the unimportant, or worse, the misunderstood, be the final words of parting.
Tell them.
