    yeah stephens basically tied all future historians' hands with that one speech. its pretty irrefutable.

    lincoln was not even an abolitionist when he was elected. he didn't like slavery, but did not want it to spread to subsequent states joining the union. i suppose that limitation is what they called the northern aggression. only after the war started did he decide to free the slaves.

    Further,  Emancipation only freed slaves in the rebel territories.  Not MD and KY which were still slave states.  And NJ voted against the 13th amendment.
