A plurality of Americans believe God created humans without evolution

Most believe in a divine role in human emergence

House Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-La.) sudden and unexpected elevation to the top job in the chamber last week meant that a lot of political observers (and more than a few politicians) were left playing catch-up. In the hours and days that followed his election as speaker, Americans learned a lot more about Johnson’s past rhetoric and advocacy, a background that sits squarely within the overlap of conservative and religious beliefs.

One particular vignette came up repeatedly. Over the past decade, Johnson has worked and advocated for a religious theme park in Kentucky, one centered around a re-creation of the ark described in the Bible. The theme park elevates the idea that the world was created in its present form by God several thousand years ago; that there was no evolution involved in the emergence of different life forms, including humans.

Polling released this week by Suffolk University for USA Today indicates that this comports with the views of nearly 4 in 10 Americans — more than say either that human evolution was steered by God or that humans evolved without any divine intervention.

As you might expect — particularly given the beginning of this article — Republicans are much more likely to say humanity was the result of divine creation than are Democrats. A majority of Republicans say divine creation created humans; just under half of Democrats say that there was no divine role.

This overlaps with other demographic characteristics that mirror partisanship. Younger Americans are less likely to adopt the strictly creationist view of human existence; older Americans are more likely to. People with master’s degrees or other advanced degrees are more likely to believe in evolution, as are people who most trust NPR and PBS as news sources. Those without college degrees and who watch Fox News are more likely to be creationists.

Those who indicate that they plan to support former president Donald Trump in the Republican primary in their state are more likely to be creationists, in keeping with his strong support from White evangelical Christians over time. There are too few supporters of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) to be statistically significant, but among those who responded, their views were more moderate than those of Trump supporters.

What’s particularly interesting about the Suffolk data is that a separate question about religious service attendance doesn’t line up as neatly. Here are the percentages of each of the above groups that say they go to services or events at other religious congregations at least once a week (shades of purple) and those who go less frequently or never (orange).

Notice that, with a few exceptions, like age, the divisions aren’t as dramatic. There’s a 30-point gap between Democrats and Republicans on the evolution-creation question and only a 20-point gap on weekly church attendance. There’s a 50-point gap on evolution between those who trust NPR and those who trust Fox News but only a 25-point gap on attendance.

Perhaps the most striking comparison is education. Creationism is embraced by twice as many people with no more than a high school degree than those with a master’s or other advanced degree — but they report going to church weekly at relatively equal rates. There isn’t even a big gulf in the percentage of each group that says they never attend a religious service.

Johnson, an attorney, appears to fit into that left-most point, a reminder that these patterns aren’t universal. But there is a correlation between educational attainment and politics, with more-educated Americans tending to vote more Democratic. It’s therefore difficult from this poll to disentangle the causality between education, belief in the principle of evolution and partisan identity.

But the overlap tracks with Johnson’s background: He’s a more-conservative legislator who backed (if only indirectly) the more-conservative position on human emergence. It’s a position that has more adherents across the country than the idea that human evolution occurred independent of any divine actor.

U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan issues warning to AG investigating conservative donor Leonard Leo

Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, speaks to reporters as House Republicans hold a caucus meeting at the Longworth House Office Building on Oct. 13, 2023 in Washington, D.C. (Win McNamee/Getty Images)

U.S. Rep. Jim Jordan, R-OH, is leveraging his leadership of the House Judiciary Committee to discourage an investigation into a conservative mega donor.

Leonard Leo has gone from The Federalist Society to GOP judicial whisperer to the head of a sprawling, well-funded network of dark money organizations. Those political non-profits are at the center of the dispute. According to Politico, Washington D.C. Attorney General Brian Schwalb has begun investigating whether payments from one of the dark money groups to a Leo-controlled for profit entity violated the law.

In a letter to the attorney general, Jordan and House Oversight and Accountability chairman U.S. Rep. James Comer, R-KY, alleged the investigation was politically motivated. They demanded access to documents and communications related to the inquiry, and ordered Schwalb to schedule a briefing for the committee.

Leo’s political spending is particularly relevant with Issue 1 appearing on the ballot in November. So far, Leo’s Concord Fund has contributed $18 million to oppose the reproductive rights amendment.

    Who’s Leonard Leo?

Leonard Leo rose to prominence through The Federalist Society. Under his stewardship, the conservative lawyers network became a kind of farm league for Leo’s efforts to push the state and federal judiciary to the right.

Leo played a significant role in advising George W. Bush’s U.S. Supreme Court’s nominations, but his influence grew substantially with the nomination and eventual election of Donald Trump.  Leo was responsible for drafting the U.S. Supreme Court shortlists Trump touted during his campaign. All three of the justices Trump appointed during his tenure came at Leo’s recommendation.

Outside of The Federalist Society, he helped establish the Judicial Confirmation Network in 2005. That nonprofit’s first task was running a campaign in favor of now-U.S. Supreme Court Chief Justice John Robert’s nomination. The same organization promoted the nominations of conservative Justices Samuel Alito, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett. It also campaigned against the Merrick Garland’s Supreme Court nomination.

As its mission grew, the organization changed its name to the Judicial Crisis Network. In 2019, JCN changed its name again — this time to The Concord Fund.

Tuberville to seek floor vote on No. 2 Marine leader after commandant hospitalized

    By: Ashley Murray - November 2, 2023 4:35 am

WASHINGTON — Sen. Tommy Tuberville, who for months has been blocking hundreds of military promotions in protest of a Pentagon abortion policy, plans to call a floor vote on the nominee for second-in-command of the U.S. Marine Corps after its top leader Gen. Eric M. Smith suffered a health emergency Sunday.

President Joe Biden nominated Mahoney in July.

“The vote could be as soon as Thursday,” said Steven Stafford, spokesperson for Tuberville’s office.

Hey I get the sarcasm, but we literally have “liberal” college students at Cornell this week chanting in support of ethic cleansing by citing the River to sea song. Are we going to state they don’t understand what they are singing for? If so, yes they should be banned.

no race or group of people has been ethnically cleansed more than the Israelis and Jews. Yet you read this forum, and there is only crying about a direct retaliation to a 9/11 level attack on Israel. Why is this country treated differently ? Why is it ok to sing about ethnic cleaning against Israel - that is clear in the first few seconds of the video attached to that news article? Why are no liberals here demanding Hamas surrender?

it’s sad that I need to stand with our conservative posters. Yes we should ban the college kids who are learning this hatred from somewhere.

JB is 100% correct. Either the students are singing in support of ethnic cleansing, or they have $hit for brains. Which is it?

Gov't doesn't ban free speech, even objectionable speech.  Gov't doesn't ban people who exercise free speech. Now I guess Cornell can because they are private, but it would still run into Constitutional challenges.

Not to mention Israel’s aggressive efforts to curtail free speech on college campuses of any speech critical of Israel, including surveillance and intimidation of Israelis who study abroad. Tenants of a democracy, right?

Hedge fund billionaire Leon Cooperman is blasting college students for protesting against Israel, joining a growing list of powerful university donors to speak out on the issue.

“These kids in college have sh*t for brains,” Cooperman told CNN in a phone interview.

We need to ban college.  Every student should be jailed.  Then we can finally ban kids.

BTW - I don't totally agree with your positioning of River to Sea to be an ethnic cleansing song.  That song has been in use for generations, even before Hamas and others adopted it.  It can viewed a number of ways, as a Free Palestine, Single state solution, or in worse cases, the removal of Jews.  And then finally, your adoption which is ethnic cleansing.  So to be clear, I don't believe for one fucking second that every student that supports Palestine at these rallies is pro-genocide.  That's absurd.

I have found through my own experience of seeing things online that this is where the conversation ultimately goes to in a nano-second. any time you say anything about being supportive of Palestinians the knee jerk from many is "ANTISEMITE!". that's what makes these conversations so impossible. I can be pro-Palestine and anti-Israeli government and be pro-Jewish all at the same time. But some are so hell bent on being the victim. MSM is not helping at ALL.

I think there’s an assumption being made that these college students are all liberal. It seems to be a default as an outcome of how polarized the Israeli - Palestinian is.
