The big-stack-of-paper strategy comes to House Judiciary Republicans
    By Philip Bump
    November 04, 2022 at 12:56 ET
News broke early Friday: The Republican minority on the House Judiciary Committee was releasing a “1,000 Page Report” on alleged politicization of the FBI and the Justice Department. The length was mentioned in the group’s tweet and in its press release, reinforcing the heft that 1,000 pages of documentation would obviously convey.
There’s just one problem with this assertion: The report itself was less than 50 pages. Most of the rest of the document was letters sent by the minority members of the committee to various people. In fact, there were more than 1,000 pages of material that wasn’t the report itself, instead mostly those letters.
Included were pages with nothing but signatures on the letters: There were more than seven times as many pages that had nothing of substance on them except signatures than there were pages in the report.
[Sign up for How To Read This Chart, a weekly data newsletter from Philip Bump]
The report gets off to a traditional start. A cover page, three pages of executive summary. Then an unusual but pertinent page calling on potential whistleblowers to reach out to the committee. After that come 43 pages of the report itself, documenting alleged complaints from within the Justice Department about the department’s culture.
That’s where the meat of the document ends. What follows first is an eight-page appendix identified as “Attacks on Pro-Life Facilities,” most of which are incidents of vandalism. Then a nine-page appendix that serves as a subindex of the scores of letters that make up the rest of the document.

    continues..

Sounds and reads like Nazi Germany. And to think there are posters who not only chided some of us for thinking that it “could happen here,” but are chomping at the bit with glee and can’t wait to see it come to fruition.

How’s that for fruit from the poisonous tree?

  • And good fucking luck ‘Murica, you’re going to need it.

Christian Nationalists are a threat to Democracy

"Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they're sure trying to do so, it's going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise. I know, I've tried to deal with them..."

could this be a "good" thing though, end game wise? does the US typically elect an R prez when both houses are red? or does that not matter?

if that happens, trump is finished. no way he's running at close to 80. if he's even still alive with his McHeart. and I don't think Don Jr stands a chance on the federal stage. Ivanka, on the other hand...

I'm trying not to pay attention to the polls but they crop up here and there and, of course, I at least take a peak.  It's just beyond unnerving to realize how fragile democracy is right now and how many people in this country are good with the idea of living under authoritarian rule staffed by herd of psychotic MAGA republicans.  The perpetual nightmare of it all.

    Good article, thank you!
You know what's almost funny is that somewhere in the book of Revelation (singular, as it was written), the author (likely writing under the influence of a strong drug or possibly a lead poisoning delirium) predicted that a prophet would come who would fool the masses into believing he (it's always a he) was the second coming of Christ, but that he was really Satan deceiving believers.
Well, you could almost believe that passage, right?

What's even more disturbing (or interesting, if you can view it from an objective, historical perspective) is that so many people in this country have turned to religious fanaticism, a sure sign of being in the throes of the collapse of a society.
    Surely we are there.

If there is any bad economic news, the party in the White House usually gets blamed. So even if the Rs win congress, they can still point the finger at Dems since Bidenflation is all the Dems fault. It’s incredible that despite good growth and a good jobs market, due to inflation, there is expected to be an anti democrat vote this week.

Good new climate law?  New domestic semiconductor manufacturing? Lower Medicare drug costs? Big infrastructure bill passed? All of this cumulatively is making zero impact, if projections are to be believed.

FINALLY!!!  I’ve been waiting for someone to mention the words in revelations.  I’ve thought this for 6 years but couldn’t post it cause I thought you all would think I was crazy.  Well good to know someone feels the same.  Said he would come from the east, east of where though?  He doesn’t fit the unifier description but it could mean unifying the evil.

    No, our not crazy!
I'm not a Biblical scholar and certainly not a Biblical literalist- I think a lot of stories in the Bible are allegorical- but it just seems so odd to me that Trump is surrounded by evangelicals who praise him like he is the second coming.  And yet he is so obviously an evil person!  It all just fits the whole notion of the False Prophet.  From what we know of the character and person of Jesus, if he were here today, he would be mightily pissed at all these phony religious types who  claim to be "good Christians", and Jesus would particularly take issue with Trump who is anything but a good, or spiritual, or loving person.

I'm pretty much a "vox clamantis in deserto" (voice crying in the wilderness) type myself, and am no longer affiliated with any particular denomination or religion, but I know a good number of people of faith who are who have nothing in common with these hateful people who claim to be "Christians" but in reality are people of hate.

I find the whole thing quite disturbing.

It’s amazing to me that people are scared about some loss of democracy if republicans take the majority.  All that will happen is they’ll be able to stop the disaster of the last two years from ruining the country.  That’s a good thing.  This has been the worst president in my lifetime, and all you have to do is look around for evidence of that.  I have democrat friends who laugh when I say that- I’m 42- and then a day or two later they shoot me a text and they’re like “you know, you weren’t wrong about what you said.  I just didn’t want to agree with you in public.  Things are so F’ing bad man, it’s pretty sad.”  And before everyone starts making excuses about the pandemic, let me remind you that Biden had to basically do nothing and things would have coasted along as they were (not great, but not this bad). Instead, he revoked all of trumps stuff as an FU on day one to appease the far left and those struggling with TDS, and here we are with a shitshow of a border, a frigging war in Ukraine, a disaster in the Middle East, record high this, record high that.

we’ll see what happens in a few days, and hopefully no funny stuff from the left goes down, but hopefully we can at least stop the spending, inflation nonsense, paying for student loans with other folks’ money, etc. nothing ever happens with our two tier justice system, but there’s a lot of dirty folks in our govt who should be removed and hopefully more.  I’m hoping without last minute election changes with mail in balloting, we can at least come an honest winner we can all say won.

Last but not least we need to nuke the media.  It’s made everyone insane. Here’s a really interesting website which breaks down the stories and how it’s been covered… no wonder liberals and conservatives are living in completely different worlds:

Speaking of blind spot, y’all on the right are in a closed loop echo chamber. You keep telling yourselves Biden is the worst ever, and believe it solely because you only listen to those in your community. That is why you all are authoritarians. You only think how your leaders want you to. On the left we don’t. For example, my opinion, AOC is horrible…the squad is horrible. I’ll save other anti dem comments for a later date.

So here I will post this again, seven new laws signed by Biden, all items people on both sides of US politics should want, and many of which have been promised by the gop in the past, but yet never delivered…until Biden came along

    1. Best US climate law ever. Yes there is a climate crisis. What makes this bill so good is it provides incentives for companies to provide renewable energy, not regulations

    2. Best semiconductor chip law ever. New USA manufacturing all over the states

    3. New infrastructure law. Promised by trump for years and years, delivered by Biden.

    4. Best gun safety law in nearly 30 years, supported by a majority of.....Republicans

    5. Medicare prescription drug cost decreases. Again promised by both sides for years, delivered by Biden.

    6. Minimum tax on corporate profits for companies like Amazon who tell wall street they make billions, but never report taxable income. You probably pay taxes, why shouldn't billionaires?

    7. Expanded health care and benefits for Veterans...promised by Republicans forever....delivered by Biden.

All that will happen is that the “other” will be left behind, marginalized, dismissed and persecuted. Let me know if you need an assist on who the “other” are. 46 years old and Brandon is the worst president of your lifetime? Were you in a coma from 2017-1/20/2021? There is no hope.

Ah, meant to mention this as well.  You mean, like showing up at voting booths armed and intimidating those poor helpless, caring, intelligent MAGA voters?  Well, I would strongly suggest being on guard and vigilant.  You know those Dems are out to cheat the far right, even if it means intimidating them at the voting stations.  Hell man, if I were MAGA, I would stay home!

Funny how funny stuff only seems to happen in urban areas of swing states, and never ever in a rural area.

incredible bias, 40% of the country is completely up trumps election rabbit hole arse, despite’s what moderates might believe.

Mostly, I imagine, but not strictly in swing states.  My relative of mine worked the polling station in her town in the San Francisco Bay area in strongly pro- Hillary Clinton California during the 2016 presidential election and was intimidated by Trumpsters.  They are everywhere and they are dangerous.
