Newark 2010

A dartboard show, something from just about every era, but especially the non-album Ten era tracks. And get to laugh at a Jersey crowd who doesn’t know the origins of a song written about their state

Hi, I host a Pearl Jam Podcast. We go back to some of the classic shows in their history and break down the entire setlist front to back. From historic perspective, to performances, to setlist construction, to fan stories. We do our best to capture the magic that is their live act and help you relive those memories, or if you weren't there, maybe turn you on to a show you've never heard before.

Live On 4 Legs can be found on Apple Podcast, Spotify and any other major podcast platform. But please support our website and check out the episodes archived there. Oh, and the Concertpedia as well (for you Five Horizons and Two Feet Thick fans, we've picked up where they've left off)

The infamous "TBD" show. Should have been Boston 2 but they couldn't secure the venue because of Bruins and Celtics playoff holds.

Absolutely correct.  I can't imagine what would have happened if this set was played at msg.

Yup. Bottom of the list for me in terms of the in-concert experience, but a pretty great bootleg. I’m not as big on rating shows based on the rarities in the set list as some people around here, but set list aside the band was on fire that night. I didn’t pick up the boot for several years because I had walked out of the show so disappointed, but when I finally did I was amazed at how great they played. Or maybe the boot just sounds better since there’s no crowd noise interfering.

I loved this show.  Had great fan club seats and the set list was awesome.  The crowd wasn't berserk but it also wasn’t dead in my section.  As long as people aren’t being drunk idiots I don’t think other fans really impact my enjoyment of a show.

Amazing set-list and band was pumped but crowd not so much. Couldn't get 10 Club tickets and sat in AMEX pre-sale. People behind us asked us to sit-down. I told them is was a PJ show and we stood for entire show!
    2008 MSG I & II
    2010 Newark, MSG I
2013 Wrigley Field, Brooklyn I & II, Hartford, LA I & II, San Diego
2014 Detroit, Moline, St. Paul & Milwaukee
2015 Ed Sullivan Theater/ Central Park
    2016 FTL, Miami, Philly 1&2, MSG 1&2, Fenway 1
    2017 RRHOF
    2018 Seattle I & II, Missoula, Boston I & II
2022 Apollo, MSG, Camden, Nashville & St. Louis
    2023 St.P. 1 & 2, Austin 1 & 2
    2024 MSG 1 & 2, Baltimore, Philly 1 & 2, Fenway 1
  • It came after back to back powerhouse shows (CT and Boston) and right before two MSG shows. I know traveling fans probably make up a small minority of the crowd, so it's difficult to pin the dead crowd on people being tired. Or people being more excited for the following 2 shows. But the crowd was definitely lacking

That Boston '10 show is easily in my top 5 and I wish they were able to secure a 2nd night.

I should have been there. I pulled up great tix side stage on TM day-of, but didn't pull the trigger. There was hurricane-like rain that day and I don't like driving into Jersey even on nice days. =/

It comes up every few years when somebody posts about that show. I've definitely told the story before...

My friend passed me a joint at the end of the first encore. I took one hit and security were all over me. (Didn't help we were the the last row of lower level so the walkway was right behind us.) They pulled me out, then frisked me against the wall right inside the concourse, asked where the rest of my shit was...the usual. They were being total assholes over a joint, but I guess that's typical arena security. There was a NJPD there, and he seemed annoyed by them as well. They wound up escorting me to the exit and threw me out.

The crowd was definitely on the quieter side but I’ll always defend this show. I had a great time, and setlist was pretty special. The people around me were into it like any other show and my section was pretty energetic. Like someone previously stated, as long as drunk even-bro’s aren’t ruining my enjoyment, other fans have little impact on my personal enjoyment of the show.  And the boot sounds great by the way

Indeed. Anyone who had 10C tickets for either MSG show was ineligible for 10C tickets for this show. This was also the "You ripped our faces off!" tour, IIRC.

    You guys are right.

I remember now... Newark was a "second-chance" type of show. People who had 10C tickets for MSG could buy Newark...AFTER a set amount of time, allowing non-MSG holders first chance.

Can confirm this.  Great set list, but it is my least favourite of 30+  PJ shows because the crowd was so trash.

  • 10+ years later, and I'm still fascinated by how this show is considered and rated. That the quiet crowd/building affects how "good" the show was is such an interesting - and terribly subjective - metric to me. I'd take that setlist any day. Where it falls in that overall tour - especially after Hartford and Boston and before those 2 MSGs - doesn't do it any favors, either.

Any way of considering and rating a rock concert is going to be “terribly subjective” my man.

Right, but putting such subjective weight on the subjectivity of the crowd that night will always be funny to me, especially in regards to this show. I don't know another show where the crowd is so intertwined to the overall negative perception of the show like this one.

That’s because it was a total outlier in terms of the crowd energy. Eddie himself commented on it at the encore break (“You guys are quiet, but that’s okay, that’s just your way...”).

Honestly with all of this talk about the crowd which we know was a big talking point, we try not to address it. There is one point where you can tell from watching the YouTube clip that no one is engaging at all, but there are also points in the boot where you can tell Brett Eliason was able to elevate the crowd noise. And someone in this thread brought up if this set was played at MSG, well some of it was. Insignificance, You Are and Once were all played night 1 and that’s wondering if they did that because they wanted to see if those songs would get a better reaction in a different setting
