It’s good. There are a few I don’t get into yet, but that’s common with this band the last 20 years. Seven O’clock, River Cross, DotC, Who Ever Said, Retrograde, all fucking brilliant

It is up there with Binaural as best since 2000. Musically Gigaton is great, if Ed still had the voice of 90's Ed, it could compete with Yield and No Code, but he doesn't.

I gotta disagree, his voice is perfect on these songs. He’s not screaming anymore, his voice fits the tempo on these songs and blends in great. Not sure you complain that his voice is not up to par. Seems like nit picking.

Yeah, I think Ed's voice is pretty good on this one.

I just prefer the smooth vocals over rough vocals. I totally understand that is the difference in 30 year old vs 50. Some peoples voices change. Just my opinion.
Definitely not a "masterpiece" or a "triumph" as some have described. Bottom three....
I feel like the band killed the momentum of the album in a couple places. "Never Destination" and "Comes then Goes" could have been left off and the album as a whole would have been better.

Agree. And thou I like Dance of the Clairvoyants, it could have been so, SO, much better with a McCready face-melting solo/hook in it...the tune almost feels unfinished.

Wonderful record. It stands next to No Code in terms of diversity; the sound is all over the place and it works magically. Overall, who knows. I could never listen to Lightning Bolt or Backspacer all the way through after the initial release so it's above those 2, I'm sure. I love Gigaton front to back.

I agree that it trips up a little bit with Comes then Goes (a great song, but I think would have been better on an Ed solo album), but Seven O'Clock into Never Destination is a really good transition, in my opinion. Buckle Up into Retrograde would have been fantastic, Comes then Goes kind of awkwardly breaks that up a little bit.

It’s still really fresh, I’m confident it won’t enter my top 4, but I’m also fairly certain I like it more than the last 4 records. So ultimately somewhere between 5-7.
I rank it toward the bottom for me, along the lines of Lightning Bolt and Backspacer. It's fine, but doesn't do a lot for me like it seems to for most on this board. I just don't see any songs that will be considered classics from this one, but I am enjoying it more than the first few listens. That being said, I think a number of them will be fun to hear live and may change my perspective.
I don't think anything they put out will ever overtake their first 13 years of music for me. Those albums, ten to binaural, are woven into my life; the most influential part of my adult life. From the time I was 19 until I was 32. Riot Act was a huge disappointment for me when it was released, although I appreciate it now, their 3 albums after RA never hit me like every album before did. I've kind of accepted it for what it is. I think there's some good music on this album and I feel like there was more of an effort put into it than the previous three. I would rank this one right behind Riot Act right now but I think that's only because there are at least two songs I consider 'classics' on RA; it's hard to predict songs that will stand the test of time on a new album. All just my opinion and everyone is different.

That's your opinion and your opinion is not mine or anyone else's!

I feel the same, though Riot Act has grown on me maybe less. I think this is their best since Binaural.
There are so many catchy parts to this album and I find myself going back to different songs. Sometimes it's the lyric to one song, sometimes it's the way Ed sings part of a lyric, sometimes it's a riff, sometimes it's an overall groove. I actually rarely find myself skipping a song, with the exception of Buckle Up.
On minute my brain is ruminating on "Whoever said it's all been said, gave up on satisfaction!". The next minute it's the verse section on "Superblood Wolfmoon" with those chomping guitar riffs.
One minute I'm really digging the ever growing synth sounds on DotC, the sliding bass riffs, and the lyrics "Save your predictions! Burn your assumptions", and "Expecting perfection leaves a lot to ignore" and I'm just grooving to the whole thing. The vocals are ethreal and experimental on this and I'm actually really digging this new sound experiment.
Then my brain is totally stuck on the guitar riff riding over bouncing bass on "Great Escape". It's got such a fuzzed heavy rock sound, and then this catchy processed vocal kicks in backed by piano segways in to a screetching guitar solo, and I can't get it out of my brain.
Alright even pops in once a while. It's not as catchy as some of the others, but has it's own occasional catchyness. The lyric "It's alright to be alone", seems to very apropos right now. Then I start hearing some of those Binaural ebow sounds.
Seven O'Clock gets catchier, and there's some great ambient sounds in the back. Ed's vocal inflections are what's really making this more memorable.
I'm outside painting and Never Destination's driving riffs are stuck in my head along with Mike's very Hendrix like solo. This sounds like a leftover cut from Avacado and Backspacer.
Then my brain's craving the SG-like sounds of Take The Long Way.
Buckle Up is least memorable for me. If there's a song I find myself wanting to skip just to get to the next song, it's this one. Maybe it will grow over time. I will say, over the weekend I had a moment where my brain said "This sounds like a Dave Matthews slow jam".
I almost can't get enough of Comes Then Goes. The acoustic sound and vocals have crawled in and found a home in my brain.
Retrograde is just awesome. This is the one I'm most looking forward to seeing live. This certainly feels like Backspacer or Lightning Bolt, it's uplifting, but also catchy. That shift in sound combined with the processed vocal thing Ed does at the end just gets me. It gets so big and ethreal and I really want to see if that translates life like I think/hope it will.
River Cross has it's catchy moments and lyrics, but isn't one I find myself craving to come back to. The last quarter of the song is what I find the catchiest.
I'm finding the lyrics and sounds more memorable on this one that anything since Binaural. I'm really liking the experimentation with sound. I've probably already listened to this more than Backspacer or Lightning Bolt, and its mostly because it starts with one of a number of songs getting stuck in my head so I start listening to the whole album again.
