After Some Time to Take In and Digest Gigaton, Where Does it Rank For You?

Whenever something new comes out there is always the shiny new toy effect that happens, but Gigaton right off the bat felt like it was going to be a slow burn. This album is good top to bottom without any filler tracks. There really is not a bad song, just good and great songs imo. After a handful of listens initially I felt as though this was PJ's 3rd best album, and a ton more listens through this seems to hold true for me. Songs like Never Destination and Take the Long Way, which initially I thought were decent have grown on me even more, and the songs I initially was really drawn to like Seven O'Clock, DOTC, Who Ever Said, Quick Escape and Retrograde I appreciate and love even more. As you really dig into the lyrics and listen for nuances in the music, you appreciate the album even more, especially given its relevancy to the time we are facing right now. This album encompasses the array of the bands sounds. I really like Yield and No Code and Vitalogy, but for me I honestly think they have outdone them.

Still hard to rank for me since it is too soon but if I had to I would say best since Yield. I am not sure how much legs these songs will have yet and how they will sound live though of course. There are 10 great songs on this album with a couple of those being some of the best they have ever done and 2 good songs. Not a bad song on the album for me and thats probably a first since Vitalogy (VS if you count the filler from Vitalogy)

So far I think it’s their best since Binaural. It’s gonna take some time for me to start putting it ahead that. I do love it though. Every song. Top to bottom. They did a great job on this record!

At the moment, it's coming in 8th out of 11. That sounds a bit negative but it really isn't, it's got tough competition. It may push Binaural to one side and move up to 7th in time.

Its a great album, but  would still rank it below the first 7 albums definietly and possibly below Avacado also.  It's a mile infront of lightning bolt and backspacer.
Saying that. all tracks are still growing on me so could move up the order over time.  To think a band 30 years in can produce music of Gigatons quality and diversity is amazing.

Not ready to rank it yet, but I remember Jeff Ament saying something about recording their great "jazz opus" one day.  That was probably 15+ years ago.  I'd say Gigaton is getting closer to that.

Top 5 or 6. Best since Avocado which was the best since Yield.

This is a great album and keeps getting better. I put it ahead of LB and Backspacer and it’s still climbing. This thing is easily an A . Very impressed with this.

Haven’t listened to it in over a week.  Tried about a week or so ago.  Too much production/kalimba/muddied vocals/drum machine or whatever the heck that is.  The second half of the album is tough to listen to.

Quick Escape and SBWM are good, 7 o’clock is solid.  Unfortunately  it’s already out of the rotation.  it’s about what I expected.

    Tied for last w LB

Best since yield.  It s not s bad song but I just can’t get into take the long way.  Everything else is top notch.
I'll ride the wave where it takes me......
  • too early for me to try to attempt to rank it among the other 10 albums but for me, "WES" is an absolute corker.

I'd put it at the top of the last 20 years. There are several songs on this album that I could see being live staples moving forward.

I would put ahead of LB, BS and Riot Act.

Really close to Binural and No Code.

But not anywhere near Ten, VS, Yield or Avacado.

At this point in their careers, I think this album is wonderful and am grateful to have it.

Ahead if lb and backspacer, ties with self titled. Could pass self titled, it’s just a really good album all around. Some of Ed’s best lyrics since binaural and best music since riot act.

I listened to it a few times after it first came out but haven’t listened to it since.  Was so excited by DotC, but that is the only song I really like.  It’s about even with Lightning Bolt at the very bottom right now.  I’ve probably only listened to Lightning Bolt about 10 times ever.

Gigaton feels like an album of its time, like a piece of art made by artists.  Any true PJ fan can discern the feeling of capturing lightning in a bottle (Yield etc), versus the contrived and uninspired (LB etc).

I have Vs. then Ten at the top.  I have Gigaton tied with No Code in the 3-spot.  No Code is very uneven as it has In My Tree and I'm open (both of my bookends).  Gigaton is pretty great to me throughout. Then Vitalogy, Yield and the rest.  I like all of the albums a lot.  All have great songs.  Looking across the catalog, very few turds in the punchbowl; a major one though at the end of Vitalogy.     That's why I'm here.  They are a match with my tastes. To me, Gigaton is huge, bigger than life and refreshing.  Great sound quality, added affects.  All a great bonus.
Up here so high I start to shake, Up here so high the sky I scrape, I've no fear but for falling down, So look out below I am falling now, Falling down,...not staying down, Could’ve held me up, rather tear me down, Drown in the river

It definitely feels like a sibling to No Code and Yield.   A cousin to everything else.
