Music video is a little amateurish? Stock bonanza with a ton of super on-the-nose imagery. Meh. Doesn't ruin the song or anything, but I won't be revisiting this. Seems like it was rushed.
First reaction - clean, crisp, new wavy and reminds me of Devo. Bass is finally up front, thanks Stone.
And I'm not living this life without you, I'm selfish and clear
And you're not leaving here without me, I don't wanna be without
My best... friend. Wake up, to see you could have it all

Clearly Boom's fault. Missed the deadline and showed up with some video of ants in his backyard on his iPhone. Stone wasn't happy, "Bees, Boom. We said we wanted video of Bees."
For me the part after around 1:40 is just much more enjoyable than the first couple of minutes. I'd like the guitar to be more prominent and perhaps less of Eddie's singing, I don't particularly like how he sings the first few verses.
It's also so much better with headphones.
It is interesting stuff and I do admire the effort to do something unlike what we've call come to expect, but I am not crazy about it after several times listening to it. As many have noted, a lot of 80s/2010s sound there, which some people love and some people don't.
It could have been a LCD Soundsystem song -- just not one of their best ones. It seems like the kind of thing that it may take a couple of albums to get completely right, a change in direction that could lead to very promising new music if the PJ classic sound was a bit more integrated with the new, but at least in this one song it's not quite there yet.
Well, certainly not what I was expecting but that's the point, no? I remember hearing my 1st track off Vs, animal, at MTV music awards...I was less than smitten, I wanted Ten2.0 now it's one of my fave PJ tracks.
Thank goodness they’ve mixed it up and tried something completely different!!! We didnt need a watered down, regurgitated version of Ten or Vs, they needed to catch attention whether it be negative or positive. I love it!!

Yes. This is one comparison i hadnt seen yet. I do hear some LCD Soundsystem.
Toytly dig the song, but I absolutely hate the drum sound. I don't care in any way for overproduced drums. They should always sound live on a record and these sound like a drum track. I could dig a whole album of weird tunes like this but not if the drums all sound that way.
I do enjoy the back half of the song more than the first half.. really good long outro. Overall very cool and different , I'm cool with that. Nothing like the suspense of hearing a new pj song for the first time
-Like a lot of people here, I’m glad heard trying something new and, even if this song hasn’t fully grown on me, it makes me much more excited to hear the album than previous lead singles.
-For whatever reason, Matt’s drums sound a lot better on the version I’m streaming through Spotify than they did on the BS and twitter clips. Makes a big difference, and they’ll only be more muscular live.
-With any PJ song, to me the question isn’t how much I like the studio version, it’s “how will this play live?” Sometimes you can tell off the bat which songs will be killers live, but I really don’t know here. It might be a really solid live song, but the best part to me is the layered vocals at the end which tend not to translate really well, because nobody in the band other than Ed can really sing. Definitely looking forward to seeing it though.
This isn't a drum machine?
It is not. The demos started that way between Matt and Stone. But when they went to record it, Matt insisted on laying down the drum track even though there was some resistance to change the machine sound. It sounds like the compromise is that Josh Evans engineered it in a way that sounds very Bowie/Talking Heads late 70s, midi and synth to get a feel of greater syncopation
If Matt can play this way live without a backtrack I will be impressed. It sounds layered and very much like a drum machine.
Matt can play anything. It is live drums processed like a drum machine, the high hat is a drum machine. He can play it.

I think that's my final word on it too. The drum sound is shit. Judging by the Stone intro I think this is the only far out experimental song with drums like this. Gigaton means we gotta get some heavy shit, not rap production high hats.

Anyone hear a Duran Duran or The Police vibe with the layered vocals at the end? Love Stone’s bass grove throughout and the guitar interspersed. The drum treatment is a bit cold and icy unlike their usual warm sound but I get what they were going for. I know there’s a ton of Backspacer/Lightning Bolt defenders but lyrically this feels more like EV. Loving the sarcasm and bit of dread in the lyrics.

I have to say, I think many of the comments on this song are crazy. This song isn't really a new sound for them, it isn't breaking new ground, not completely different... It sounds like Pearl Jam. It sounds very much like everything on Riot Act, and the only real difference is the flavor of the instrumentation.
Lyrically, it’s the best Ed has done since avocado at writing a song that keeps me guessing at what it’s about. That’s the kind of thing that keeps a song interesting for years

That's what excites me most about GIGATON so far. Riot Act is one of, if not my favorite overall PJ album. Binaural's up there as well. My initial impression was that it was reminiscent of "You Are". I love the layers of Ed's harmonies on this song.

No just You Are though... Army Reserve, Inside Job, Green Disease, Of the Girl...I hear more of these songs in Dance than I hear David Bowie. No question. Bowie never did anything this good either 😜
