  • Threads like this always seem kind of pointless because you will always get each and every possible combination (Or at least enough that they all blur into one)...

    That said here's mine:

    Vitalogy
    Yield
    Ten
    Binaural
    Vs.
    No code
    Riot Act

Except every third month, when it goes like this:

    Binaural
    Vs.
    Yield
    Riot Act
    No Code
    Vitalogy
    Ten

Did you know that there are 5040 different ways of arranging this...
And if we did it with pearl jam songs there would be about 1000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000000 different arrangements... (assuming that they have approximately 145 songs)
And also that they could put together about 10000000000000000000000000000000 different 30 song setlists... :D

Like everyone else who put Riot Act at the bottom of the list. I gotta say I truely love Riot Act. So for it to be at the bottom just shows how great PJ is.

this is the greatest band in the world.. Ben Harper
Down the street you can hear her scream youre a disgrace
As she slams the door in his drunken face
    And now he stands outside
And all the neighbours start to gossip and drool
He cries oh, girl you must be mad,
What happened to the sweet love you and me had?
Against the door he leans and starts a scene,
And his tears fall and burn the garden green

An observation, I see people either have Binaural real high or real low. I was wondering what anyone else thought about this. I was wondering do people like Riot Act and Binaural more as younger PJ fans because they were listening to them when those recent albums came out and they feel more of a sense of bond with them than they do the older albums, before these fans became fans? I am an older fan who started to follow them when Ten came out and first saw them in 92 at Lollapalooza 2 with RHCP,Soundgarden,Ministry,Jesus and Mary Chain....etc. I respect all of their albums musically but think that Vitalogy and No Code show the bands versatility and creative experimentation the best and from an album's standpoint I feel are their very best. I think Riot Act has a few good songs on it like Save You,Thumbing My Way, and I Am Mine but overall is not as good of an album as earlier ones. I think Binaural has a few good songs as well like Nothing As It Seems,Light Years,Soon Forget but it also lacks the overall quality of earlier albums. Anyway just my opinion, but I was really wondering if younger fans like Binaural and Riot Act because that is when they first became PJ fans of a younger generation?

    I totally agree!
One thing i have notice, not just on this site , but generally on music boards etc, is , i^m getting old!!, well im 29.
But it makes you realize that time is flying by when you hear people on here saying "I was too young to remember Ten or Vs when they were released".
I first heard Pearl jam in 1990, i was in my last year of school and was listening to Nirvana,AIC,Soundgarden,Smashing pumpkins,Beatles,Paul Simon and other stuff, i got Ten on vinyl when it came out and spent the following six months playing it until i new every song inside out and drove everyone around me insane over this album, needless to say it blew me away ,and actually change the way i looked at and thought about music.
It inspired me to learn Guitar and write songs (along with "Nevermind"),and they quickly became more than just another band , 14 years on they are still far above any other band i have heard or been into.
I will carry on listening and collecting their music until i drop.
I hope they write many more albums and tour england soon!!!
I havent posted my fav album list because it doesnt matter and i really couldnt say, most days i listen to their music at some point and it really depends what mood im in or what the weathers like or what time of day it is that decides what songs i put on.
So yes you are correct in that if a particular album is when you first heard them or an album takes you back to a particular year in your life then it will hold special place with you.

im now thinking what my list would be , i cant help it , its like telling someone not to think about blue elephants....................

    - what are you thinking about?

  • I consider myself a large pj fan. I was there from the first. I'm 26 now and ten came out when I was in the eight grade. At the time I was a bit more into Soundgarden, but I enjoyed pj none the less. But over time I have grown more partial to pj by far. This began to happen when Yield came out. I gravitated to yield in a way that the other albums hadn't reached me. Upon reflection I feel that this is because the success that ten and vs. had afforded the band the ability to do what they wanted musically rather than be guided by studio concerns. And then the turmoil of the vitalogy and no code period to me seem to be a slightly disjointed period where the different styles of the musicians seemed to clash rather then meld. To me the yield album and those that followed, show a band that has total freedom from chart responsibility and sales concern. I think that environment has allowed the band to grow into something so much more than what they were capable of in the early period. I think the proof for this is in the bootlegs. Listen to a live show from the tem era, and then listen to them now. While I will agree a certain amount of raw energy has been lost since the early days, I think that is made up by far in their attention, to detail in arrangement, and love of the music. I personally would take the way they perform alive or black now, than the old ways the came out on the album and the early show I hope this has been interesting and I would like to hear any responses you may have
It's really great when your in a limo you can put your head to the window and look out at all the homeless people-E.V.
  • no , i cant put them in any preference order, and thinking about it , wouldnt want to.

all i want to say after reading peoples opinions is that "Ten" is probally the greatest debut album i have ever heard, full of raw emotion , pure energy and uplifting yet dark melody, highlights for me are Black, Garden ,Why Go , Once, E.Flow and Jeremy , "Vs" is the greatest follow up album i have ever heard, it has everything in it, again not one weak song ,from the thunderous Go and Animal to the spine chillingly beautiful Indifference, it goes in and out, taking the listener on a journey through passion, love ,loss and hope and leaves you sat there blown away , along with the three mentioned, include Rearviewmirror, Daughter,WMA,Rats,Leash,Blood,Elderly woman...,infact all, then came "Vitalogy", with a more raw ,live almost punk feel to it, alot less radio freindly and a clear statement from the band their intentions to divert the attention firmly onto the music and not onto themselves after the success of their first two albums, it worked ,with songs like Pry to,Bugs and Stupid mop, they made it clear they were in control of their music and ideas, the previous mentioned songs get critizism and put the album down lists on sites like this ,but moments of brilliance like Tremorchrist, Corduroy,Whipping, Betterman,Nothingman and Immortality are as good as any song anywhere, then "No Code", carry on in the same loose/live feel as Vitalogy, the album included an acoustic side of the band not heard alot apart from Elderly old Woman from Vs, if you liked this album then you were clearly in for the long haul with Pearl Jam, because by now in four albums you had many styles and feelings covered musically they had reach a great togetherness as a band, moments like Hail Hail, Who You Are ( i heard mike mcready thought after recording this song it was one of the best they had done), In my tree, Smile, Off he goes, Habit,Lukin and the awesome Present Tense ,they had established themselves as one of the most important band around, "Yeild" arrived in 98 and from the opening chords of Brain of J , it was clear they had moved yet again into different territory from No code, songs like Given to fly, Do the evolution, Low light ,In hiding ,Faithful,Wishlist and All those yesterdays sit right up there, and gave the band even more rockin tunes to add to their now unbeatable live performances, two years went by and if like me you didnt have a clue what to expect with the sixth album ,it far outwayed anything i had in mind, it started very much like Yeild with a upbeat rockin tune , Breakerfall , then settled you in to the album with loose jamming type tracks Gods Dice and Evacuation , then back to back they take it to another level and produce some of their best work to date, Light Years, Nothing as it seems, Thin air, Insignificance,Of the girl,Greivance,Rival,Sleight of hand ,soon forget and Parting ways , does music get any better? ,it could have been a wake up call in 2000, it was for me, but the world didnt catch on and after that day in september things changed slighty, added to the Rosklide tradegy in which people got trampled to death at a PJ show, the band released "Riot Act" , and you can feel the emotions of every member of the band ,on every song right through the album , its genius. Its probally one of the most satifyings albums for the band ,realizing where they are at right now and being happy theyre all still alive and together. People are still getting into this album i can tell, but it will find its place in your heart soon, songs like Save you,Ghost,Thumbing my way,You are,Get right ,green disease and All or none are as good as anything produced by anyone in the year 2002.
These opinions only reflect my views as a fan and can be agreed with, or disagreed with, wholeheartedly.

    Keep the Faith.
