You NAILED it. Matt is the best BAR NONE. Anyone can drum for a band, try finding one that sings, plays guitar and contributes as well, plays in a backup band where hes the singer and songwriter(WWC), AND is in a jazz band....a fucking jazz band.
and anyone who denies it, listen the fucking bonnaroo boot. His drumming in it is ABSOLUTELY incredible. The ending of AALTWT is fucking sick.
I've been thinking about this guys... I think all of PJ's drummers have brought something different to the band. And I don't think Matt's been used as much as he can be.
I loved the funk that Dave A brought to the band. I loved the alternative eastern-like drumming that Jack Irons brought to No Code (where in my opinion the band explored like they haven't explored since). And Matt is just a solid rock drummer, and yes the best muso in the band, but I wish to high hell they'd use him well on this next album..
And someone mentioned PJ's recording... I'm looking forward to someone recording the next album with some space so you can hear everyone's sound.
I am a huge jazz fan and I have been really impressed by what I've heard so far. I'm going to have to get the CD soon and I have GOT to find out when/if they are playing in Atlanta anytime soon.
Matt
And when he came back to, he was flat on his back on the beach in the freezing sand, and it was raining out of a low sky, and the tide was way out..
Never was into Jazz. I listened to it on the way to work one morning, about an hour drive. I enjoyed the sound, really mellow easy listening for that time of the morning. I will listen to it again.
I wonder how much of that 6+min clip is improvisation vs playing the actual song....any jazz heads know? It's certainly a very coool Monk tune and a very clever choice of a cover song to include in the cd
