I always read that song title and think, "Surely we're talking about a Who cover here, right?"

“The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man [or woman] who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.”
Variously credited to Mark Twain or Edward Abbey.

Who You Are is currently my White Whale.   I would love to hear it live.   I've pretty much heard every song off the first 5 albums (not including the super creative interlude type tracks), but this one has escaped me.   Would love to hear it.

Damn I just did some research and saw that I haven't seen "who you are" live since 2008!  Eleven years ago!!!  wow.
I've seen it four times and the breakdown is:

    9/29/96

    6/19/08
    6/22/08
    6/25/08
I'm glad I was at one of the 08 shows which they played it. Only time I've seen it.

Who Are You and Who You Are would be like Help into Help Help.

And certainly, Who Are You would be a breath of fresh air when compared to the usual covers.

Great show 1996 Key arena.  the giant dive from the fan during alive to Eddie stopping during Animal when security roughed up a fan on stage.  Incredible night and they had some anxiety from the mostly failed 95 US tour.  It was their rebirth.  the floor was intense that night.

Heard Who You Are in NZ in 98 and the Netherlands in 14. Gotta be the kit and Jack's playing eh-brought me into the song in 98 but in 14 I didn't cop onto what song it was until Ed sang and whilst that was a pleasant surprise it was still just a bit blah. Didn't they do it with percussionists at PJ20? As for the Fixer maybe they just don't like playing songs a half step down much as they don't often enough nail it-Ten Legs was an exception. Yeah some Riot Act and Avo stuff dropped off quick. Those songs (Force of Nature too) I'd love over covers but that's a different thread.

    They sure did...
Mudhoney drummer Dan Peters played with the band on Who You Are at PJ20.
I think Liam Finn, Glen Hansard & Joseph Arthur were on stage with them for this song too!!

So what do (did) you all think of Who You Are as the lead single? Should it have been Hail Hail instead? Or if they had to bring out something sort of "tribal," would In My Tree have been a better choice?

I thought it was a terrible choice. It has definitely grown on me over the years but man did I dislike it when it first came out.

Felt the same about Given To Fly. Hell Matt didn't need to play anything at the HOF LOL. But had they made nice with Dave A and he rejoined (don't worry I know it wouldn't happen) he wouldn't be able to play Jack's stuff either. Dave K had the closest feel to Jack, being at the back of the beat.

Yeah I'd have gone with Hail Hail. But the guys knew what they were doing keeping things low key. An anti-single if you will? In My Tree could have worked. Off He Goes as leadoff would have been too quiet I think.

I'm quite surprised Off He Goes was released as a single at all. It's a very quiet tune - one which I much prefer live (especially Toronto 2011).

It was a brilliant choice and the signal of we do we, not we do you.

I remember at the time thinking it was certainly different for them, but still enjoyed the song and it's only aged like a fine wine.  I think it was a great move to release it as the first single; good way to gauge the hardcore vs the casual.
