i dont know man, I think Ten is great for what it is (musically as well as the movement it caused), but that is the one, and only one PJ album that I dont listen to. I enjoy the songs live, but prefer to hear the new stuff...I think it was a time and an era, but it was also was almost 15 years ago.

On a emotional connection, I feel that Pearl Jam, the new album, is where I am now. I enjoy it a lot more. Its more current. And for that reason it is my favorite.

Musically, I think Vitalogy is the greatest. Its so dark. Last Exit, Whipping, Spin the Black Circle, have unbriddled passion...an unleashing of emotion...Tremor Christ and Immortality, are just a feeling all to them self...Genius.

Ten is my least favorite PJ. In the history books it has its place, and will always be great, but as I said before, I can't even remember the last time i listened to the album itself....

(I can hear a boooo from the crowd... :) )

I agree with this...Ten's sound is so boring. It has no energy especially after listening to the speed they play these songs live. I can still listen to Versus because it's production is so good, But Ten sounds dated and blah.... I think Eddie himself has said the exact same thing.
  • Hmm, I don't think so. I'm a Yield girl. However, Ten rocks and the addition of those two songs wouldn't hurt. That is, unless the inclusion of those two would mean the removal of two on the album. I couldn't handle that.

Ten is an awesome album. :)

exactly I almost want to tell people not to buy it at work and thrust sometihng else (usually no code) at them but I realized that if they are buying Ten now they probably don't want No Code just a better sounding nickelback

(and I'm not saying Ten=nickelback but in their buckcherry lovin heads it does)

    Plus it's kind of one-dimensional.

My personal favorite (although it definetly depends on the day) would be Yield.

Frankly I can find something to love about each record, but Ten is a little boring now, after such incredible works as ... well everything following Ten.

    Ah yes...

Introspective, philosophy filled lyrics.. light feeling.. best melodies on any Pearl Jam album... without sacrificing the energy.

And also, every song on it is spectacular and unique :D

As much as I love those two songs, no. They don't feel like Ten at all which is why they were cut probably.

this s a little sidetracked, but while we are talking about Ten...One thing that bothers me about Ten, is that PJ have come out with so many GREAT songs, and when I am back in the States, and PJ comes on the radio, more times than not, its from Ten. Maybe Betterman, daughter, or some other radio friendly song will sneak in there, but I feel like Ten unjustly overshadows most of the PJ catalog.

Over the past 15 years, PJ has greatly developed into top rate musicians (as well as people)...Look at Pearl Jam. The differant sounds..Come on, Parachutes, which I happen to Love (and happens to be playing right now), sounds like nothing else on the album, with the exception that it has a PJ feel to it...

I dont know, the depth shown in the entire PJ catalog, on every Album, sountrack, etc after Ten, is undeniable, and I think to hold Ten above any of them is unjust...Its a piece of the puzzle, and perhaps the keystone to their future entry into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but take it away, and I hold PJ just as high....

I think adding 'State of Love and Trust' and 'Breath' to 'Ten' would improve it more.

Boring? I'm a fan of Yield myself, but nothing compares emotionally to the closing 3 tracks of Ten when Garden, Deep and Release just tear my freaking heart out every time. One day, probably a few years after the album came out, these three songs just hit me hard (my Senior year of college). I don't think I ever cried because of music before, and I still will shed an occassional tear when playing them back to back to back if I'm alone and driving in the right mood.
19 Pearl Jam shows and still searching for Deep!

    2021 (3) - Dana Point I, II & III; 2022 (3) - San Diego & Los Angeles I & II; 2025 - Southern U.S. Tour Please!
  • Besides the lack of depth on Ten's production and the uneccesary amount of reverb, I think the tracklisting would be better if you made Release the opener and Deep the closer. Yeah.

As for Vs. I really like the songs, but I don't think the production on this one is that outstanding either. On this same note, the new album sounds a lot like Vs. to me.

Ten is awesome. At the time, it was weird and different. I know this because I bought it on 3/22/92 (before a MetallicA show in Charleston WV) when I was 16. We put the tape it, thought it sounded weak and weird, and took it out.

YIELD is the best album ever. But you all know that already.
Do you remember Rock & Roll Radio?

I have been thinking about this, and alredy expressed my feelings about Ten. Today, I was thinking about wash and Alone, and I am going to turn this question around...

Would Wash and Alone be as good songs as they are if they were on Ten...For me(and I think with many others) there is a certain mystique with B sides. Wash especially is a great song, but its also a great B side song; a lost dog. It would still be good if it were on Ten, and it probably would become more mainstream if it were on Ten, but the B sides, and songs like Wash are special for the Real fans. They're not for the normies.

I dont know. Its like the christmas singles from the Ten club. They're for the true fans. (another problem with Ten; everybody loves Ten. But how many people throw out Yield, or No Code as their favorite PJ album. Most of the time you get, "oh yeah, I haven't heard that one yet")

  • Don't get me wrong, I love all the albums as much as any of you (but I think Avocado is overrated, that's a different story though) but Ten - yes, admittedly, it's more boring then the other albums, mostly due to the way the songs were produced (ahh, if only the grungier, Dave A version of Even Flow were on there) - but Ten is the purest of all the albums, and for that it must be appreciated.

There's no mystery as to what Ed is singing about in Ten, it's the closest to Ed's mind we get. It's raw, it's badass, and it's almost like a pleasant history lesson in the life of the Vedster, and the early 90's.

Ten captured an era, something the other album's don't do as well. (Oh, and I also love the lack of politics from Ten. Ten is all about the emotion.)

State of Love and Footsteps are 2 of my top 10 and they missed the album, how and why I don't know but they are awesome songs

another reason many of us don't listen to Ten anymore is because the damn thing is worn out. I was in HS had it on tape (yes it was that long ago) and am now on my third CD.

You listen to something a million times over and over and it loses a bit of its luster, but let's not get crazy here. Ten is the cream of the crop. Not only does it have the most hits but some of the most emotional songs they've ever written.

I dare you to find 4 songs with more heart, grit, and emotion than Black, Porch, Release, and Alive on any one album of PJ.

better yet, find a group of 4 songs that are better than those...I double shit dare you

Vs. - WMA, Daughter, RVM, Indifference
Vitalogy - Immortality, Corduroy, Nothingman, Last Exit

Vitalogy I trade you Whipping for Last Exit (but cetainly a good call) and you have a solid argument.

I'm not buying Vs. though. RVM is at or above the level as it is simply badass but the other 3 songs aren't elite IMO.

for vs I would say: Go, Animal, RVM, indifference

Vitalogy is my favorite, so I think you could almost the whole album there....including aye davinita, and Pry, To as muscially great songs..plus vitalogy far and away has the best concept, cover art, book...

No Code: somtimes, in my tree (my favorite PJ song especially on the MSG DVD, great version), Habit, Presant Tense, I'm Open, ...TRUE< they did not reach the startdom that the first three albums had, but is the emotion still there, Yes. Not teen angst, but then again they were probably close to 30 at this point. if they were still spitting out teen angst, they would be any of the other copy cats...

Yield: GTF, MFC, DTE (plenty of grit and emotion in this one..maybe not sadness and longing, but there are many emotions)

Binaural: maybe not so much here...

Pearl Jam: i think its polished, but its alive, and still emotional, just a more mature emotion....Can't blame the guys for getting older...Especially when they are still giving 110% and the music is still rockin'...

I must start by saying Vitology is #1A for me and I love it

but I always thought they were just Fing around with those songs

    oddball filler IMO

love that album though, really not a weak song out of the bunch and many of their finest. Courderoy is not to be messed with!

hehe...yeah, well I guess I wouldnt put them on my top ten list or anything, but they have a cool little groove to them, and fit in well with the album...and they're short so its not overdone, like heyfoxymophandlemommathatsme, might be considered...

Vs. was a difficult one just to top Black with. I was going for emotion in the vocals which I feel Ed closely comes to in the ones I listed (WMA, Daughter, Indifference), but doesn't meet it. RVM was the obvious pick for me, meets Black's power in a different way in my book.

I admit, I couldn't do No Code, Yield, Binaural, Riot Act, or Avocado...

Alone is my altime favorite song! I like it being obscure and unknown by the more superficial fans. It makes me feel like more of the family. If it were on ten then it would just be another one that everyother fan knew of. I think it makes both songs more exciting when they are (sorry IF) they are played.

I was 16 when I first heard Ten, it was awsome and is still my number 1 album (14 years is a long time!!) whether it is because of being there, then, I don't know but I can't see anything out doing it, I think every PJ album has had outstanding tracks on them but with Ten there is something special.
