Thank you, Chocco, I appreciate it. My brother lives 3 miles from the current evacuation line so, if he and his family have to leave, I will drive down and try to get through to help.
My sister and her family live 30 miles from there and she said the smoke is almost intolerable.

Politicize  regarding wildfires.  Anyone who does that is demonstrating a total lack of empathy and understanding of what it is like to have your property, animals, or you own life in jeopardy (I've been there).

I don't know if you live in California or not, but I do. And I witness the incompetence of our government officials on a daily basis.
Currently, five people have needlessly died, and over 1,000 structures (primarily homes) have been destroyed due to this incompetence.
So I'm very sorry, but just because you begin a thread does not give you the authority to censor other members' opinions. Good evening.

Rep. Ryan Zinke, R-Mont., blamed officials in California for the current wildfires ravaging the area around Los Angeles, telling Newsmax on Wednesday that they have not been managing the forests correctly for a long time.

Appearing on "Wake Up America", the Montana Republican said that "wildfires are indicative of not managing for years. These wildfires now are large scale, taking up a lot of property, ruining people's lives, and they're dangerous. But we have to go back to management of the forest," adding "what a catastrophe in California. Yet another disaster."

Zinke was very critical of California officials for what he determined was their lack of forest management that could help possibly control these fires during his tenure as secretary of the interior in President Donald Trump's first term.

The congressman explained that, as far as wildfires go, it doesn't matter what one's position is on "climate change, yes or no, whether you are a believer, an advocate, or a zealot. The bottom line is it doesn't matter if you don't manage your forest. Because if the climate is changing, you have to redouble your efforts to make sure you manage the forests. That means diversity of species, removing the dead and dying firewood."

Zinke also pointed out that it was necessary to "look at the urban sprawl. Houses are in places where they haven't been in the last few years," and that has to be taken into consideration when trying to prevent these wildfires.

We have similar issues here in BC.  From what I gather doing prescribes fires to burn out the underbrush used to be a thing.  We also have the problem with all the logging, where trees are replaced with a single species to enhance logging.    I don't think it helps that massive wildfires we get every summer now :(

Yeah, blaming the government on these fires displays an extreme amount of ignorance regarding wildfires, history, climate, and human impact on environment.  I know a number of elementary school aged children who understand what is going on here better than some of the people posting on this thread.
AMT really has become a cesspool.   Remember when this place had a lot of really decent discussions about current events, environment, and politics?  No more.  I'm far more interested in seeing what's new on The Porch, AET, and Other Music these days.  If it weren't for the fact that I live in the western America/ California and live close to where fires as big as or bigger than these current SoCal fires have occurred (includingd, among others, the Caldor, Mosquito, King, and Cleveland fires), and care about what is happening right now, I wouldn't bother posting on AMT at this point.   

So, you live in Placer County yet you have no understanding of just how important forest management, especially fuel reduction, is to preventing large-scale wildfires? Same goes for the State Parks and forests in the more urban areas of California - like Pacific Palisades. That's government's responsibilty to a large degree and they are failing at it.

Jesus, man, you don't know where I live (I don't know where you got Placer County?), you don't know what I know or who I know.  And you shouldn't be talking about me here anyway, so would you please just shut the fuck up and go away?

Huh?? Burning embers can float for miles in those conditions and the Hills are literally right in the middle of all the other fires. It's not arson. I would have been surprised if that fire hadn't started. It was inevitable. Why would you even say this?
