Christianity is not incompatible with freedom, not when you read the actual New Testament. In fact, Christianity is directly incompatible with the alt-Right. Jesus's teachings on the poor, the humble and "strangers" run directly counter.
(replying to old post) True, but this is not where my head goes when any politician names his religion as a quality voters should be considering. Just that alone rings the alarm bells. I don't think any politician should ever mention their religion as a part of their campaign, because doing so necessarily indicates they intend to apply their religious beliefs to governance, and that is wrong IMO.
I won't argue that religion should be a part of political life. I will argue that if we lived the New Testament and the actual Word , we would have a better world. Your alarm bells are triggered by centuries of corruption of His teachings.
Well, sure. The Christ as described in the bible was an activist and a socialist. Hard to imagine the right today embracing these principles.
Exactly! That's why the left should not shun Christianity, rather take it back from the Right.
religion is not the solution. it is part of the problem.
Agreed. Politically, the left shouldn't reference any religion at all, unless they're talking about how it's irrelevant.
That's an interesting point, because you use the word "religion". I think of it as spirituality which would include Jesus, Buddha, Mohammed (where appropriate, but admittedly not familiar with his true teachings), and even Ghandi. And I would highly encourage Democrats to pin their messages to the spiritual teachings of the aforementioned people. If I ever ran for office, I would absolutely tie my policies to those teachings.
I would tie my policies to inspirational humans from history, not beings that may or may not exist and cause so much political and ethical polarity.
Yeah, that's a much better idea!
The historical Jesus existed. There is very little controversy about that.
There is actually a lot of controversy about that. But even if that weren't true, Christianity has very little relation to anything Jesus is reported to have preached. He was anti-establishment, and that is literally the only reason he did anything, really, whereas Christianity is the exact opposite.
I don't know what you mean.... Jesus showed up in contemporaneous writings soon after his death.
You guys are getting hung up on the history of the Church and the crimes, vs the teachings. I'm focused on the teachings.
I'm not hung up on anything. I think that using Jesus's teachings, to the general populace, would be indistinguishable from the Christian Jesus.
The left has ceded the ground to the right and it has hurt the left. Yet, Jesus's teachings were completely liberal. Now I'm being a cold, calculating political bastard here, but if his teachings align with progressive ideals (which you lined out above), then this is way to find commonality between the left and right and heal the rift! And try to build the base! That's my point.
My point was that you need to do that without referring to religion, because religion is necessarily divisive. Keep Jesus and every other religious character, including God, out of it, and everything would go much more smoothly. I don't feel like pandering to the right's religious fanatics is a viable plan, personally. Separation of church and state should be just that, even for the right wing nutters. Until America learns that lesson, the chances of things getting better are slim to none.
That'd be nice... but not really practical for the US circa 2018.

If nothing ever changes, nothing ever changes.... This is why I don't have too much hope or faith when it comes to America right now.

I know what your point is. but i disagree with it completely. the left have abandoned the christian faith in droves. why? because they know they don't need religion to be a good and decent person. those weren't the teachings of jesus. they are common morality that is inherent in us all. morality and decency didn't begin 2000 years ago. it began with our conscience. christianty merely coopted it and claimed it as its own, like many/most of its traditions/teachings.
you will not unite the country through jesus, whether you try to separate him from religion or not. i'm sorry, but that to me is undeniable.

Elliott Broidy, now that’s a man of family values. Will all the repubes return all the money he raised for them? Where are the righteous evangelicals? Guess he shouldn’t have used a Team Trump Treason condom? 3D? BS? More brilliance or more dots? Drain the swamp? Hahahahahahaha.
Ummm they're upset because what Comey did tipped the election into Trump's favor. So what we have here is a president and a Republican Party claiming that Comey was involved in a conspiracy theory............to help elect Republican Donald Trump. Irony.
I'll ask again, what happened to the Republican Party?

Russian troll bots providing information based on Julian Asstrange sharing leaked emails between members of Team trump Treason and hillary’s Old computer at State. Hillary set up a back door so she could monitor sexy rexy and junior and Dear Boy Kushner. Hillary was the source of the Podesta email dump. Team Trump Treason donated billions to the GCF and Hillary agreed to tank her campaign but Hillary was double crossed by the disclosure of Comet Pizza. She’s exacting revenge.

Yeah the whole win at any cost has really transformed politics to a terrible place and especially the Republican Party. To think that the Republican Party and many Republicans hate the Democrats so much that they prefer the Russians is unfathomable!
GOP candidates are now mimicking Trump’s authoritarianism. That’s ominous.
Senate primary candidate Don Blankenship is running an ad that says: “We don’t need to investigate our president. We need to arrest Hillary … Lock her up!”
In multiple GOP races across the country, the Times piece reports, candidates are employing phrases such as “drain the swamp,” “build the wall,” “rigged system” and even “fake news.” The GOP Senate candidate in Tennessee ran an ad that promises to stand with Trump “every step of the way to build that wall,” and even echoes Trump’s attacks on African American football players protesting systemic racism and police brutality: “I stand when the president walks in the room. And yes, I stand when I hear ‘The Star-Spangled Banner.'”
