To answer your opening question OP the Repub party is in power and has gone nowhere and is likely to survive all allegations unless something more than Russia or ptape is brought forward.
https://www.theatlantic.com/amp/article/539457/ empirical In recent years, Congress has instead ceded such questions to successive presidents. For example, President Barack Obama waged war in at least seven countries under the auspices of an Authorization to Use Military Force that legislators passed shortly after 9/11, even though its language specifies “those nations, organizations, or persons” that “planned, authorized, committed, or aided the terrorist attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001,” a limit that has been oft exceeded.
People change jobs all the time, but what does that mean in the lobbying world? Our research found that nearly a third of the lobbyists who stayed at the same organization, but did not report any lobbying activity in the first quarter, have titles that indicate they are still working on influencing U.S. federal policy. Was the swamp drained, or are they simply trying to circumvent the rules?
So I'm no expert but, golly....it sure seems like they are trying to rush through a huge bill that will affect millions of lives and 1/6 of our economy without knowing how much it will cost all for a short term political gain.
Why oh why would the republican party do this? Sure seems like the opposite of conservatism to me. What happened to this party?

I was just discussing this with someone who is currently getting into politics - he's a centrist, but open to both sides of the spectrum, depending on the issue. His take, after hobnobbing with actual conservative politicians and attending their events, is that they are anything but fiscally conservative when it comes to countering the left just for the sake of countering the left. He was rather appalled by the hypocrisy.

so....isn't the vote 50/50 now with Pence as the tie-breaker?
A lot (maybe the whole ball of wax) depends on which way Collins and Murkowski goes. I hope constituents in Maine and Alaska are putting on the pressure.

Anyone can call, but honestly, do they pay attention to anyone that isn't a constituent - i.e. a voter?

It can't hurt, that's for sure, and it takes only very small bit of time to make the call.

This vote will affect people outside their constituency.

Good point. I doubt they track every call and it's quick easy to do!

Many of their votes affect people outside of their constituents. I think it's wishful thinking that they'll pay attention to people who can't vote for them, but I wouldn't tell anyone not to try.

Murkowski's answering machine options don't include out-of-state but I pressed "2" and left a message anyway.
