“Without the results of toxicology tests, we do not know what was going on with Chris—or if any substances contributed to his demise,” the Cornell family said.

The 52 year-old Soundgarden frontman had a prescription for Ativan, the family said, and may have taken a higher dosage. Attorney Kirk Pasich noted that Ativan can cause paranoid or suicidal thoughts, slurred speech and impaired judgement.

Ativan is a tranquilizer and anti-anxiety medication that is sometimes used as a sleeping aid.

Vicky Cornell, the singer’s wife, added, “Chris’s death is a loss that escapes words and has created an emptiness in my heart that will never be filled. As everyone who knew him commented, Chris was a devoted father and husband.”

She said Cornell flew home from Soundgarden’s tour the weekend before to spend time with his wife and children, before returning to the mid-west.

Cornell’s family called the mentions of suicide “disturbing.”

“When we spoke after the show, I noticed he was slurring his words; he was different,” his wife added. “When he told me he may have taken an extra Ativan or two, I contacted security and asked that they check on him.”

She added: “What happened is inexplicable and I am hopeful that further medical reports will provide additional details. I know that he loved our children and he would not hurt them by intentionally taking his own life. The outpouring of love and support from his fans, friends and family means so much more to us than anyone can know. Thank you for that, and for understanding how difficult this is for us.”

Wonderful tribute to Chris last night by the RHCP... Seasons brought tears to my eyes.

I saw Soundgarden last week in Indy and grabbed a poster on the way out of the venue. I never would have guessed that it would represent their last tour.

I want to share this video I took at a Chris Cornell concert back in 2009. I believe he was on tour promoting his solo album, "Scream." But anyway, in the video Chris notices a little girl caught up in the pit, so he stops the show to make sure she's okay and brings her to safety. This just goes to show what a good person he was and how much the world is going to miss him.

Other news outlets are reporting the same as the one posted, if true, it puts things in a different perspective of what and why things may have happened...

Agree. I did a Google search on his name and noticed an article titled "Chris Cornell: Troubled singer with a unique voice".  I tweeted the author expressing my dismay at the title and he said that Chris must be troubled if he committed suicide.  wtf...

Damn! Another great loss-way too soon. Great singer, great songwriter, great front man. After not really connecting with most of the music that immediately preceded it I thought it was a breath of fresh air when the scene came along that was bands like Soundgarden, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, and Alice in Chains. This music was real-being created by people with something to say who were gonna say it regardless of what the current state of the music business and audiences thought. Just turns out that it was so strong that they changed everything by doing what felt natural without second guessing how it would be received and by giving a voice to a whole cross-section of people who were looking for theirs. That’s true art!

I didn’t really know Chris. We communicated via email at one point because he was on my short list of singers that I reached out to during the making of Shout! I was very excited that he was interested and that he was even thinking of writing lyrics for one of the songs to create a “real” alternate version which I was very excited about as I’ve always dug his lyrics. As happens so often in the music business, life prevails. He received some bad news involving a family tragedy and wasn’t able to do it and I will always wonder what it would have sounded like.

"Say Hello to Heaven”. Maybe not be the interpretation he intended, but fitting. -WH

I've just watched video of Slaves & Bulldozers & I'm probably reading into things but i don't know that I've known him to sing pretty well a whole song from behind his hair flopping in front is his face before, sort of hiding from everyone. in absolutely reading into this of course but, just.... :heartbreak:

That was normal for him. I was looking through the pictures I took of SG in Boston back in '13, and in most of them he has his hair in his face.

He sang with his hair in his face at both Lakewood 2015 and Indy 2016.  It was just a thing he did.  At one of the shows, @derbydave would have to help tell which one, he also flapped his hair to make it like Trump's hair.  (Not a political statement at this time so please don't anyone get their britches in a bunch.  Just relaying a show story.)  He had awesome hair.  Why not use it as a prop?

I was hoping to wake up this morning and not have a heavy heart.

I found out late yesterday afternoon my father, who was being treated for pneumonia, has a large mass on his lung. He needs it biopsied and removed ASAP.
My mom's recovering from a ruptured spleen from a car accident last week. It's gonna be a long road.

It's been a real tough week.
I got so much going on right now, I just feel like I need to vent. I just wanna scream sometimes.

Yeah, my God, why? What happened that caused him to want to take an extra dose? It hurts just to even think about it, but did we at the show contribute to or cause his anxiety? After he spent the whole night raving about how awesome Detroit crowds are, and he even tweeted it before the show, but then before the last notes of Slaves & Bulldozers even finished, people were streaming to the exits to beat traffic... what if we had all stayed, "demanded" another encore?
