From a mainstream perspective they are. I’m a big Dino fan, but when I wear my shirt, most people say, “What’s that?”
Edit: I mean in notoriety. I like Weezer, but Dinosaur Jr. beats them everyday for me. Now, last time I saw Weezer in concert though, they were a hell of a lot of fun.

Totally agreed!
And other than people who know me, I've always gotten the same response anytime I wear a Dinosaur or J Mascis t-shirt. I think maybe only once did someone say, "Oh cool, Dinosaur Jr!"

Now the one time I got a random, “Love that shirt!” was when I was doing car rider at my school. One of the dads was a former rocker from Massachusetts, and he rolled the window down to admire my purple cow shirt. I always wear it on pajama day. It seems to fit!

Very cool! And seeing as the dad is from Mass., that makes some good sense!

I cannot imagine Dino doing the 35 minute doors open set.
I haven't really listened to either Weezer or the Flaming Lips. But Weezer are opening for Smashing Pumpkins soon and I am looking forward to seeing/hearing them then.
That's very cool! Dinosaur Jr. live is spectacular. They are one of those bands that, as good as the boots or live recordings are, must be experienced first hand to fully understand. The vibe, energy and crushing SPLs just don't translate to recorded media.
It's really great that they're doing this!
If hope can grow from dirt like me, it can be done. - EV

I heard something about "death in the family" causing a Dino show to be cancelled. Anyone know more about that?

That's twice now that I've seen Lou wearing hearing protection headphones. All those years of LOUD must be getting to him. I hope it's not too bad. I know J and Murch have worn ear plugs for several years. I wonder if Lou did as well?
The problem with music (or anything else) that loud is that the most protection any headphones (even noise cancelling headphones) can provide is around 42dBs. That's because our skeletal structure, especially our skull, transfers sound to our ears. Only being in a sound proof enclosure (like Mission of Burma's drummer, Peter Prescott below) can offer more protection. So with a band playing at 120 to 130 dBs, you're still getting 78 to 88 dBs or more. Anything for 70 dBs, especially for extended periods, is likely to cause damage.

I haven’t listened to it yet, but Lou discusses his ear issues in his latest podcast.

I'll have to find time to track that down. Glad you mentioned it.

I can understand what Lou is going through. Gosh, I though I had or at least knew about as many hearing conditions as one could get. Starting in September, 1993, I've had loud tinnitus in both ears, hyperaccusis, recruitment (abnormal perception of sound as volume increases), and poor auditory discrimination, But I'd never heard of diplacusis which Lou suspects he has. For someone like Lou whose career is based around sound, I can appreciate why he would feel anxious. He did mention that "animals adjust", and that's good knowledge and hopefully will help him through it all.
