No, I don't think that photo with the black face is Covington Catholic. They have blue colors. I'd be shocked if it were the same. But what doesn't surprise me is that this is being spread by the "other 98%". They are as bad as right wing bullshit. It wouldn't surprise me if it was run from a Russian troll farm too. A photo said to be featuring Covington Catholic High School students clad in blackface during a 2015 basketball game made the rounds on Twitter Monday morning amid last week’s Indigenous Peoples March controversy.
The photo depicts several white students, some in blackface, shouting at an opposing black player.
While the photo’s origins couldn't be verified, the official Covington Catholic High School YouTube account published a video last January boasting its basketball school spirit, and several clips, including one from 2012, showcase attendees chanting in black face, a mockery of the opposing players
The full-body black paint worn by the students in the school’s official video closely resembles that of the students in the photo being circulated on social media.
One student from the photo, not in blackface, is sporting a logo that also mirrors the Covington emblem.
Sandmann, the Covington (Kentucky) junior donning a MAGA cap, tried to dispel reports that he was mocking Nathan Phillips and other Native Americans at the end of the Indigenous Peoples March as they performed the “American Indian Movement” song at the Lincoln memorial.
“I never interacted with this protestor,” Sandmann said in a statement. “I did not speak to him. I did not make any hand gestures or other aggressive moves.”
Meanwhile, Phillips, spoke to The Daily News about the incident over the weekend.
“I read it,” Phillips told The Daily News of Sandmann’s statement sent to CNN by a public relations firm. “I didn’t agree with it… They looked like a lynch mob.”
