It boggles the mind that American Indians still get the shaft. Terrible!

I watched this tonight on Democracy Now. LaDonna Brave Bull Allard's story is incredibly powerful and disturbing. I can't believe that at this point in time we as a country are going down this road again. My kid's elementary school collected supplies for the PineRidge reservation a few years ago. Now we are setting dogs on these folks. WTF

I totally understand the perplexity of it all. I was thinking about all the history of the various struggles of American Indians from the destruction of the Aztec culture to the stories B. Traven told in his six "jungle novels" (his lesser known but amazing books that reveal the horrible conditions of Mexican Indians leading up to the Mexican Revolution), the Trail of Tears, the incidents that occurred during the during the build up of the American Indian Movement including the occupation of Alcatraz, the Wounded Knee incident at Pine Ridge, the BIA Office take over in DC. All this history, all of these efforts, and still the American Indian is treated and disrespected like this. If this continues, it will go down as yet another major is a national shame regarding our treatment of Native Americans. For many, it already is.

And I don't mean to be snide here but we who are non-natives are not going to improve this situation by being queer for Indians or hanging dream catchers from our rear view mirrors or pretending we understand how those people feel. Probably the best we can do is support the American Indians quest for cultural autonomy and respect, and do as little to contribute to their oppression as possible. I've also read that they like to be thought of in the present tense and not just as romantic or tragic images in history. In other words, they are living people, not artifacts. It is important for us to be consciously aware of this. At least in this way we can stand with them.

No one cares about what goes on in North Dakota because it is the wastelands of the USA.

Odd that it would be perceived as such. I've been to several parts of the Dakotas a number of times and found most places there to be quite serene and beautiful. The real waste lands in America are places like the tar sands areas in Alberta, Las Vegas, Nevada and the minds of hateful people.

Yes! I was just going to post that too. Thanks for the first link, btw.
The triumph tasted all the sweeter because it had followed so closely after a seemingly immense defeat. Mere minutes after a federal judge declined the Tribe’s request for an injunction to stop construction on the pipeline, the Obama administration made a surprise announcement that it would not permit the pipeline’s construction for the time being.

“Construction of the pipeline on Army Corps land bordering or under Lake Oahe will not go forward at this time,” said a joint statement from the Department of Justice, the Department of the Interior, and the U.S. Army. “We request that the pipeline company voluntarily pause all construction activity within 20 miles east or west of Lake Oahe.”

Some good, practical ways to lend support. Thanks ocean!

As for the temporary halt in construction, I am wary. What do they mean by temporary? During this intermission of construction what will take place? Arbitration? Restoration of sacred grounds? Or just a move to take the wind out of protesters sails, get them to think everything is A-OK now? Looking back at all the broken treaties over the many years... Need I state the obvious?

And yes, Jose, I just noticed you have suggested the same thing above.

I'm kind of where Joni is, on the California front.

I love more about my home state than I despise (thankfully).

This song saved me when I was in my 20's, homesick in Europe, and missing home.

Plus that fucking Sunset Pig. Never did kiss him.

You're welcome. I, too, am uneasy about the "temporary", but I will take it for now. Meanwhile, I think the more noise we all make the better.

I love California as well. I've tried leaving but once you're born here, there is an intangible pull, the force of mountains, desert, and valley but most of all the California coast. What I loath is what has been done to it. I know I should not speak of this place in such harsh terms but what I feel about the destruction and congestion is verified to me by similar feelings expressed by poet Robinson Jeffers:

"Robinson was emotionally drained when he arrived in Taos [New Mexico] that year. Through the decade, despite success [in his writing] he had suffered from bouts of severe depression. These were caused by many factors, including distress over the ever-increasing popularity of Carmel [California]. Tourists who flocked to the area liked to picnic on the rocks below Tor House [the home he and his wife Una built]. Jeffers erected signs that said, "CLOSED TO MOTORISTS. NO TRESPASSING BY PERSONS LEAVING CARS ON OR NEAR THESE PROPERTY LINES" and, "NO CAMPING. NO SHOOTING. DO NOT LEAVE PAPERS OR OTHER FILTH," but these did little to discourage them. Accordingly, Jeffers thought about moving."

from Robinson Jeffers, Poet of California by James Karman, page 129.

And in what decade did this flood of inconsiderate tourists and new residents so distress Jeffers? The 1930's. Eight decades ago.

    This is cause for weeping.
