Favorite Bands that have Broken-up

I've seen some 2000+ concerts in my life so far, and one of my top 10 ever concert experiences was SXSW in '91, and this guy my friend had a huge crush on told us to see a band we'd never heard of, Uncle Tupelo. She was gonna do whatever he said, so we went to Liberty Lunch in Austin, where the lights were somehow "not working" during UT's set which was right before Drivin' and Cryin' were to play. They had an album out called "No Depression", and because of the light situation it was basically dark in the venue and their roadie just kneeled in front of Jay and Jeff with one flashlight shining it back and forth between the 2 of their faces.philzonereddy said:We all have bands that we loved that have broken up...
Some due to death, some due to fights, some due to direction or whatever...
Which band would you put back together if you could? And which band do you miss the most?!
Me there are a few, but Uncle Tupelo always comes to mind...lightning in a bottle, and the further you pull away, the greater it gets...
Don't get me wrong Wilco and Son Volt are in my regular rotation, but damn if give anything to see Tupelo...
So what's your dinosaur band, fossilized in your memory?
AND MY MIND AND SOUL AND ENTIRE BEING WERE MELTED AND HAD A **BLAST**!!! I'm short and not one for moshing, but we had no choice, the music was too good and too driving. Bought the cassette of No Depression at Waterloo the same day and never looked back. Have gotten to talk to both Jay and Jeff in later years about that show... they both definitely remembered it.
So glad you started this thread with them, I'm a ginormous UT fan, saw them another 6 or 7 times before they broke up and saw Wilco's very first tour.
All that said though, to answer your question, my top 4 all time favorite bands no longer together are:
1. The Clash
2. REM
3. Bob Marley & the Wailers (never saw them)
4. Rage Against the Machine (so glad I saw Prophets of Rage recently, they were awesome, but obviously not the same as Rage with Zach) (only saw them once, when they toured with Wu Tang)
But Uncle Tupelo are waaaaay up near the top of that list as well!
And I wouldn't have thought of Pink Floyd if I didn't just read the other responses here, but yeah, Pink Floyd for sure. Because I never got to see them live.Post edited by JH6056 on0 -

XTCwhere did you hear this? I would love to hear them again.
Anything you lose from being honest
You never really had to begin with.
Sometimes it's not the song that makes you emotional it's the people and things that come to your mind when you hear it.0 -
The Catherine Wheel. Or just Rob Dickinson solo, even.0

So freakin' jealous you've seen Uncle Tupelo! I didn't get into them until after I was a Wilco fan. Their reunion is still my brother's biggest dream. Jay Farrar is like jesus to him.JH6056 said:

The Black Crowes. Fuck that guy who used to be the lead singer (I won't even justify using his name)!0

I'm kicking myself for being too proud to pay scalper's prices for the replacements when they did their recent reunion.
R.E.M. Is the one band who's live shows rival PJ's in my mind -- with a show in 90 being the gold standard for my then 17 year old self and a more recent 2006 show proving they could still rock (and seeing Johnny Marr and Peter Buck on the same stage....)0 -
Johnny Marr...I have been on such a Smiths kick of late...
And have been really, really listening to Marr and his style/range...
Fantastic stuff...
And The Smiths without a doubt deserve a nod in this thread...Rochester, NY>The Haunt...Ithaca>Syracuse>Troy, NY
