    Cool.

At the same time weird doing it without Dave A. Maybe should have waited if they ever were to meet and reconcile.

Not weird to me tho. Dave was the third drummer in the band, not an original member, and while he was there for a significant time I don't think they need to keep any songs from his era on hold. It was good they acknowledged him.

Hmmm, don't really like it without Eddie's early 90's voice.

Cool that they did it though.

Watch Pearl Jam Perform 'Angel' for First Time Since 1994

Band digs out 1993 Christmas single - as well as 2009 holiday track "Santa Cruz" - at Telluride's Ride Festival

By Daniel Kreps July 10, 2016

Pearl Jam performed their 1993 Christmas single "Angel" live for the first time in 22 years at the band's headlining gig at the Ride Festival.

Pearl Jam's 2016 tour has seen the band celebrating their 25th anniversary onstage by digging into the deep recesses of their catalog, whether it is full album performances of Ten, Vs. and Binaural or unexpected covers of Sting and Doobie Brothers cuts. At the band's headlining gig at Telluride, Colorado's Ride Festival Saturday, Pearl Jam whipped out another surprise, playing their 1993 Christmas single "Angel" for the first time since 1994.

"Some of you may know that this next song doesn’t get played much and some of you may not." Vedder told the crowd prior to the performance (via Stereogum). "It was written by the guy who was our drummer. Dave Abbruzzese, We wish him well."

Abbruzzese joined Pearl Jam soon after the recording of Ten to serve as the band's drummer for the tour in support of their 1991 debut LP. The drummer remained part of Pearl Jam through Vs. and for the majority of Vitalogy; he was ultimately fired in 1994 and replaced by Jack Irons. In 2015, two warrants for Abbruzzese's arrest were issued in Denton, Texas stemming from controlled substance charges.

Pearl Jam has only played "Angel" a handful of times live, including an acoustic run-through at the 1992 Bridge School benefit concert where Abbruzzese played guitar.

"Angel" wasn't the only Christmas singer to get a receive a rare performance Saturday: "Santa Cruz," off the band's 2009 Christmas single, was played live by Pearl Jam for the first time since 2010 and for the second time ever.

blew me up as i was thinking about it and talking about it all day yesterday.
maybe it's quiet here because it is a summer weekend for many and people don't visit the forums much this time of season? Or maybe people just don't understand the significance of this song, the history of it, the poem/book that lead to it etc etc

I don't know and understand any of that stuff. I only know that the show this weekend was the first time the played Angel since 1994, which is really cool. If there is a story behind this song, please tell.

yeah this setlist was a laid back one for sure, im sure that was intentional? This definitely makes for a bootleg keeper

and what a surprise that Angel popped up at Telluride of all place after 20 plus years

This was absolutely magic when it happened. All of us in the crowd were speechless. Not freaking out...just speechless as if we couldn't believe it was actually happening. Just beautiful.

This version at Telluride was incredible. It was the perfect atmosphere for it. After its 22 year break I thought Ed sounded great on it. I enjoyed the dual guitar/full band version as well.

The cool thing about this band is how they continually surprise you. You get down/jealous for a few days because you weren't at Philly 2, but there is always something around the corner from the band that makes you say "wow".

Great read, never knew all that.
Wouldn't it be funny if the world ended in 2010, with lots of fire?

Sounded better when Ed and Dave were 5 feet from me at the regal.

I bet there was some sorta misunderstanding that night too at the Regal Begal. Probably led to Dave being fired.
