I guess you're not aware that Allahu akbar means "God is great," not "I pledge support to ISIS." You're a lot more likely to hear an Arabic speaker say it when they get good news, they congratulate someone, or their favorite team scores a goal. In another life, I taught English to Arabic students and they said it all the time, including when they got a good grade or were talking about everyday things.

Thank you for bringing some sanity to proceedings, though I suspect that once again it was a case of feigned ignorance on the part of our resident troll

It's possible the whole situation could have been handled better ... but really he was detained for 10 minutes, I suspect the police detain and question people all day everyday, that I assume is part of their job, be proactive before bad happens. As for the hotel clerk she or he is only doing what the media and politicians have been preaching for the last 15 years ... report anything suspicious ... was this guy suspicious? Only the clerk knows. Both the mayor and chief of police both apologized. Sometimes you take your apology and move on. Even though the thousands of other people detained daily don't get personnel apology.

I am glad that this happened.
ISIS supporters come in all colours, shapes and sexes.
If he was allegedly overheard speaking his allegiance to ISIS while in a public space with many people I would want it to be investigated quickly as well to make sure he wasn't about to do something after making his final pledge.
He just happened to be wearing clothes like that. The response would be no different say if you are overheard taking about bombs or hijacking at an airport.

So tough shit for this guy. It happened move on.
So OP the world has always been one of being punished by false allegations. Some never even get disproved.

Did you read the article? The man spoke little English yet the hotel clerk thought he was "pledging allegiance to ISIS" while he spoke on the phone in Arabic? You think an actual terrorist would be that stupid?

At least the mayor and police department acknowledged screwing up.
And this clerk and any other dumbfuck here knows fluent arabic to know that "pledge allegiance to isis" garbage?
You can pledge allegiance to ISIS out loud with two words.
Many Islamic terrorists are on record of having said two words before committing atrocities.

Unless you live under a rock you know what two words those are.
Allahu akbar? Go fuck yourself douchebag.
    Geezuz man.

Way to kick it up a couple notches.

The cops were acting accordingly. They can only go by what the dispatcher tells them and have no way of knowing if he's an average Joe or a terrorist. Cops get a pass from me.
The apologies from officials were nice, won't happen often though.

I really hope that we end up living in fear, I really don't...

    Melodramatic.

I'd be more ashamed after reading of mass murder than I would be hearing of some guy detained a bit for acting suspiciously- even though he wasn't from what we have read. There's much greater ignorance out there that doesn't draw as much more ire from many here.

People on this board and elsewhere were questioning why neighbours of that twat in California that shot up his work place in the name of Allah hadn't reported his suspiciousness.

A person simply cannot win under the circumstances we have. It's probably best to say nothing and accept mass murder as it happens lest you be called an intolerant fool.

Don't get me wrong... it's shitty this guy was detained, but this event is international news? Really?

I suppose it's deemed an important story as it represents a growing trend of the persecution of innocent Muslims?

it wouldn't be melodramatic if this was a black person who had been detained for "acting suspciously". why should it be swept under the rug when the person is arabic?

everyone needs to calm the fuck down and stop listening to glen beck.

I honestly have felt the same as gimme sometimes. I think, if there are actually aliens out there, and they can monitor our behaviour, can you imagine how fucking stupid we look to a third party?

    Yah maybe.

The Istanbul thread has three pages and is set to slip into the MT abyss. This detainment already has two pages.

Edit: forget aliens... do you think anyone in Turkey- including its Muslim population- is looking at this blunder as a shocking event?

To be fair, I doubt Turkish news comments on American domestic incidents like this. I wouldn't have heard about it in Ireland if I didn't happen to be on this very US-centric forum

The United Arab Emirates issued a travel warning to its citizens as a result of the incident. That's the international news story.

    That's interesting.

And in all honesty, I can see why. I'm not so sure Arabic travelers would experience physical harm, but I'm pretty sure the US isn't the most welcoming place for them right now.

I wouldn't go to the states if I even fucking LOOKED arabic. it's the equivalent of a black man moving to the southern states in the early 1900's.

Exactly. Imagine white folks having the police called on them and tackled, having their lives put in danger, & arrested every time someone heard them say "Thank God!"
