If you like the art buy it, but its really has be amazing for me to buy one that I didn't go to.... mainly because I need to cut down and have too many already. For me only the shows I go to now, but nothing taboo about it.

seriously, if you like it buy. Who gives a shit if you were there or not. I know the fans who attended want theirs too and somehow feel like they have precedence or a right to the show print over someone who did not attend, but that is how the free market works. Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you don't. Buy whatever print you want, whenever you can.
I have been on the did not get a poster side many times, and there were times (MSG 08 niners fan you suck) where I wanted a print to a show I was at and could not get one. But for as much crap as ninersfan got and still gets crap for buying up 2 inch stacks of the prints and flipping them on ebay within hours at a 500% markup (he literally paid homeless people to buy prints for him) he has the right to do it still. Does it suck, but so does the alternative to exclusive merch. lets say I can;t get a ticket to a hometown, gig, love the poster despite not being able to get a ticket, should that exclude me from getting a poster? HELL NO
I see it this way: 1. if you can actually get into a show these days you are damn fortunate 2. if you can get merch at said show for real cost, you are really really lucky 3. if you get shut out, the secondary market is your only option outside of saying no, so the choice is always yours to some extent, just depends on what you are willing to pay sometimes.
No, not taboo at all. Other than gripes about flippers, why would it be? I've a few posters for shows I attended where for those particular posters it's more about the memories they stir than for the artwork (i.e. '10 MSG 1). I've a few posters from shows I didn't attend where it's all about the artwork (i.e. '14 Milwaukee). The best, IMO, are the ones from the memorable shows you attend where the artwork is top notch (i.e. Cracker Jack)
I have one, which was an Eddie Vedder solo poster from a Detroit show. I'm a big Red Wings fan and I really liked the poster (the artwork was Chelios themed).
My main problem is that I have a poster for every show I've seen since 1998 (except for Boise 2000 which had no poster). Some of those I'm not super fond of (a bit too ugly to hang up). Plus now other bands are putting out posters, so now i've got way more posters than I have room to hang. I feel I'm in no position to buy posters from shows I've never been too, because I can't even keep up with the ones from the shows I've attended.
I only have one poster framed and hung in our house. I just love the art work of the old sailors ship. I wasn't at the show. It's just art, if you like it but it. It's a bonus if you happen to be at a show where you actually like the poster. I've been to about 30 shows and I rarely like the poster enough to buy it.
Taboo? Nah, that would suggest you're breaking an unwritten rule; unwritten rules don't exist. It's either against the rules or it isn't.
I try to limit myself to shows I've been to for reasons that have already been mentioned, but every now & again an awesome poster for a show I didn't go to becomes available and I make an exception (case in point: this year's Ottawa poster.... I can't believe that hasn't sold out yet, it's a beauty IMO).
Buy what you want if you can. If you don't want it, don't buy it. It really is that simple.
I'll always buy a poster if I attended the show (which is why I have the Vancouver 2011 (and its variant) even though it's one of the most ridiculed posters). Sometimes I'll buy because I adore the artist (EMEK's Portland PJ poster comes to mind). If the artwork really kicks ass and I love the band, I'll buy. I don't really think it's taboo to own posters of shows you didn't attend.

I have two that I didn't attend... I bought Quebec 16 because it's beautiful and someone keyed me into the AP for it. And then I have the Raleigh AP, although I had tix for that show so I guess that only kind of counts. I generally don't do it just because I have too many now and have to rotate them as it is.
I don't think there is anything wrong with it if you like the art. More power to you. Some of it is really fantastic.
The only ones I own that I didn't attend are the 2 that I won in the Mystery Sale.

Have many more of shows I didn't attend than shows I did. All about the art that I like, for me, I don't care if I went or not. If the poster sucks, for the most part I don't get it. (I also went to Vancouver 11, so have Manbearpig. Horrid, horrid poster)
If the two circles intersect than I am highly likely to frame and hang the poster. [Hunted for the MIA BK Variant for a while, really wanted that one, and put it on the wall as soon as I got it.]
This year I wanted posters from all of the shows I went to -- might do something special with them. I honestly don't like any of the 4 so far all that much. Hopefully Fenway2 is nicer. Only 'loved' one poster and 'more than liked' one other from this year so far and neither one I attended. One is framed (Ft Laud) and the other might be (Toronto2) but it is something I bought.
Never understand people who gripe about people who buy posters from shows they didn't attend. Probably the same bunch of people who want to try and tell people what t-shirts they are OK to wear to a show.
I buy posters that I think are attractive.... my 'collection' is tame in comparison to many other's I feel and that's perfectly fine - to each their own. 'Been going to shows since '98 in Barrie, only have one poster from the 20 shows I've attended - Toronto Mark5 2016.... I find many show posters rather unattractive. Buy whatever you want, just please don't feed the ridiculous resell market:) Have a nice week everyone
Used to only get ones I attended and told myself I would only ever have posters from nights I attended... Then I broke down and bought the Sperry from this year which opened the door to many other purchases. So the search for many more I have liked in the past is underway. Should have bought them when they were cheap, but oh well. Buy what you like!

I buy any poster that I like the art work for and rotate ones in and out of rotation. I only do big framing jobs for shows I attend but out other ones in home goods frames. I have a guitar room/studio and like the way they look.
I rarely buy posters either way, but when I do, I only buy them because I really, really love them and want them on my wall. Whether or not I went to the show is irrelevant. It's nice if I really love the poster for a show I was at, but that's never happened to me. I did get a Wrigley poster (Emek) but only because someone else was willing to grab me one and I figured I'd be mad at myself for not having at least one souvenir from that trip.... In retrospect, I could have done without that poster.
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. ~ Desiderata
I actively dislike the posters for most of the shows I've been to. I've got a few for shows I didn't attend because the posters are flippin awesome. The only time I bought a poster I didn't actually like for a show I went to was when it dropped to $15 in the shop, and the show itself was significant to me.
Art is subjective, and anyone who wants to try to tell me how I'm allowed to spend my own money is going to get laughed at.
