Should the US institute a ban on assault weapons.

Plenty of people in Europe aren't shooting up children with semi automatic weapons. Thats the point. 40 odd mass shootings this year which is 2 months old. That is the difference.

In tradition such as native indians they surly aren't using these weapons?
Maybe, but as we evolve (or devolve it seems these days...) our tools and ways of living do as well. Hunting is still an activity that many choose to partake in because it allows them (per state regulation) to take an animal that they want to eat from the land and not purchased from someone else (corporation, feedlot, local farm or whoever). Do some enjoy killing an animal? Yeah, most definitely, but someone like my father in law puts a lot of thought in to his hunting and does not kill every deer he sees and mostly enjoys watching the wildlife and the peace of mind it can bring to be out in nature. He also thanks the animal for its meat and appreciates the nourishment it provides.

Now, if you want to argue that we have evolved beyond the need to use a gun to hunt for food in contrast to 100 years ago, then that is a relevant point, but I don't think it's accurate to say that hunters should be using a bow and arrow or spear to hunt. There would be a lot more animal suffering and injured game that would escape these types of weapons.

For the record, semi auto rifles like the AR-15 should be banned and the magazine capacity of all semi-auto guns limited.
    It's a hopeless situation...

I wish we would all read each others comments with more care here and stop accusing people of saying things they didn't say.

Yes.  It works for other countries.
We in these United States have just be so engrained with the notion of "right to bear arms" that we don't even know a) what that means b) why we needed it in the first place c) what relevance it has 227 years later.  We're just all "don't take muh guns its muh ryte" without even giving a fuck about the repercussions.
Look, I have guns. I enjoy shooting guns.  But if it means the safety of millions of citizens, children especially, is better secured, as well as the decline of misdirected and wasted resources, then I won't miss them if they take them away. Agreed.

Mass murder is awesome. If you remove such excellent weapons for mass murder... we don't get enough of it. Ain't nobody got time for that.

I don't believe there is any other country in the world who thinks its ok. Ask yourself why that is. Why no other countries in the whole world allow this and why they don't have the mass shootings daily. Hhmmmm???

Real hunting and real skill comes from bow hunting. Any stooge can shoot a gun and kill a deer from 150 yards while he's eating from a pile of corn you left out for him. But stalk a deer and being forced to take a shot from 25-30 yards is real skill. Anyone that claims to need an anything more than a shotgun to hunt with shouldn't be hunting.

Thank goodness there are people like you that can see sense. I fear there will never be enough of like-minded people to make changes in the US. Coming from the UK, the US situation is just beyond comprehension. The sad thing Is, this debate will rumble on, until the next time some f**cked up individual shoots a load more kids at school. And so history will repeat itself, over and over, as we'e already seen.

You mean, until some “responsible” gun owner with a legally purchased gun has a bad day or two and takes it out on innocent school, concert, nightclub, eatery, postal facility, etc. attendees.
