    The North - Gord Downie

"You showed me a love with a higher, cooler style
Or you showed me a problem
That is over one hundred years old
They're parents without kids without parents
Without kids without parents without kids
    Without parents without kids"

Gord was spotlighting First Nation, Inuit, and Metis activism at the end of his career, which is perhaps reflected in his lyrics.

As a person with a certificate of Indian status, and an intergenerational residential school survivor here is my lived experience with those lyrics...

'Theresa Caius' (a surviving, renamed Cauis Nation child) survived res school cuz a middle aged man bought her teenage body for reproductive aims. Her brother didn't survive. We await the return of his remains. Meanwhile, their parents suffered, their children suffered. The mental anguish was temporarily extinguished with alcohol and the next generation suffered, and those kids were taken. And this is ongoing (with opiates now). My mom lost her kids, her kids lost their kids. I've only had the Ministry threaten an 'intervention' once so far, and my child is half grown, so wish me luck folks!

And let's just say that if I had gotten pregnant at 18 after a wild weekend with Jeff and Ed, 28/29, that unborn child would have been stolen too. Guaranteed.

Just out of curiosity, what was the mention about Gord? Just a quick "We love Gord"?

he was talking about Taylor Hawkins' energy and then mentioned "up here you had Gord Downie".

At that moment it did feel like something special was coming. I was thinking something more for Taylor than Gord given all of what Eddie had said, but it was Better Man.

UPDATE: May 4, 2024, Vancouver 1, the band did it. They covered The Tragically Hip. During Daughter, they tagged Bobcaygeon and Ed sang a few lines from it. Not a full cover, but this might be the closest we get. AMAZING.

I was there and it took a minute to sink in.  By the time he got to the constellations revealing themselves one star at a time it dawned on me.

Feel extremely lucky to have been there for this. Wife & I exchanged a shocked smile. We had travelling fans beside us and it went right over their head. This and the mention Ed made in Chicago during the last Hip Show have been a really beautiful acknowledgment of how special Gord & co. were/are.
