Yeah, but human beings pick their battles, and there is nothing wrong with that. Sure we're all born into a lifestyle that has a social construct. The question is how bad for a person or group of people is that social construct in relative terms? I would argue that a polygamous community is VERY VERY bad for girls to be born into. Others are much worse than the norm too. Like kids born into white supremacist communities or fanatical militaristic sects, or any fanatical religious sect, and so on. It is okay to qualify lifestyles. Some of the them are very obviously less healthy than others.polaris_x said:but we are ALL borne into a lifestyle that has social constructs ... it's not so black and white ... we ALL participate in systems that cause suffering ... that's what it means now to be part of the "economy" ...
listen - i'm not saying it's great or it's bad ... i don't know what it's like ... all i'm saying is that the biases we project are often based on constructs we have been indoctrinated with ... i'm pretty sure if we were to truly open our minds and be given all the information - we'd be ok with some and not so ok with others ... we live in a generally fucked up world now - so, my position is that our current conventions isn't necessarily producing a great society ... so, we've got no real ground to stand on ...
Some things are a little more f**ked up than others. We can open our minds up all we want, but in my opinion... some things will never be appropriate: indoctrinating young girls for full participation in a polygamous religious cult lifestyle is not something I can begin to think is acceptable.
If adults choose to seek out such a lifestyle then fair enough.
I hear what you're saying though: in reality... raising a child to fear the Lord and dedicate themselves to a life of worshipping him is in the same hemisphere whether people care to admit it or not. Both are unfortunate in my mind.
our society is fucked up now ... people shoot each other over road rage incidents; bullying is at an all time worse, states are instituting more discriminatory laws and reading internet comments should render any sane person suicidal ... i'm just not sure we have the authority to dictate what is good anymore ...

We have a case in BC that's kind of stinky: Bountiful.
One guy... 25 wives. A brother in law with 4 wives.
They're a sect of the Mormon faith. Lots of kids that think things are cool. There's a case being developed around pedophilia whether something comes of it or not.
The central characters are creepy and the entire scene reeks of wrongfulness. Just as I empathize with women from some middle east countries that are clearly oppressed- claiming things are cool (because they simply do not know of any other way)- I feel badly for these brainwashed women and the children currently in the program.
Adult nudist colonies and swinging lifestyles? No problem. Go f**k your brains out. But polygamy as we know it people? Get f**king serious. Geezuz, man.Post edited by Thirty Bills Unpaid on"My brain's a good brain!"0 -
That case is beyond creepy. It's extremely criminal and endangers children. They ship kids down to compounds in Utah sometimes so they can marry older men, in a place where they don't know anyone and they're thrown into these massive polygamist families where all the women and girls are basically slaves. They pull all female children out of school after grade 9 and make them some of them marry and start having babies. Shit like that. The ultimate "leader" of Bountiful is in prison now, isn't he? Down in the US? Like, the grand pooba of that awful Mormon breakaway sect? But yeah, the kind of homebase mayor of Bountiful, Winston Blackwell, is a creeper slimeball too. I hope he gets locked up.Thirty Bills Unpaid said:We have a case in BC that's kind of stinky: Bountiful.

if it's not abusive in any way, do what makes you happy. I personally couldn't handle it. I get incredibly attached to a woman I've been with. it would be emotionally draining to have more than 1 for me.By The Time They Figure Out What Went Wrong, We'll Be Sitting On A Beach, Earning Twenty Percent.0

Not all people of religion are fanatics.callen said:See world were there is no marriage and kids don't care how other kids family structure is formed as long as they have emotional support.
Word "fanatical" not needed preceding word "religion". Redundant and any parent threatening their children with eternal damnation and make believe characters is child abuse.PJ_Soul said:

I did not read all your posts but a) I live in utah b) I'm pretty fascinated by the short creek FLDS bunch and c) I have read much about those people (warren jeffs disciples).
I'll just add that sister wives does not equal short creek by any stretch of the imagination. I think the show is phony but there definitely ARE polygamists like the browns. Those people don't bother me much. The warren jeffs bunch are a whole nuther story - criminals in the way they game the system and child molester men with enabler women. Not a healthy lifestyle at all.If I had known then what I know now...
