But hey, if this was their last tour then why did Ed say in Antwerp "... and then until next time... and then we'll see you next year" ?

Don't panic people. Ed said (Melbourne 3) that they wouldn't be back for awhile but he didn't say they wouldn't be back. He's never lied to me yet! They'll be back probably around Nov 2008 to March 2009. Well that's my prediction anyway.

  • I have no fear if the will or will not tour again. However, I do see them taking a longer break from doing bigger/longer tours than in the pastand making a new record. They arent on any time frame now that they dont have a long standing contract to make records with a major label..like the 7 record contract with Sony when they made Ten. While this would suck big gorilla balls, I beleive the unrushed time they put into making their next album will be more pure and will also make touring lots more fun for them. Besides, Stone one said in a recent interview..."Ed is in a better place than I've ever seen him." With that in mind....I'll bet we'll see them before too long.

Maybe that's why there were 2 Adelaide shows (it's the first time a double was in SA)... to make sure everyone got a chance to see them before it was too late...

How much of a nasty thought is it though?!

    WTF?

Seriously... Give them a break. I read an article just the other day where Stone said they don't even feel like slowing down, and still love making music. They'll be back, before we know it. You're reading WAAAAAY too much into things. Playing 2 Adelaide shows in your reasoning is like, oh no, they played 2 Gorge, LA, Lisbon, Camden, E.Rutherford, Boston, Milwaukee, Denver, St. Paul, Brisbane, 3 San Fran, 3 Sydney, 3 Melbourne, 2 Toronto shows... they're all major PJ stops, other than maybe Milwaukee, Denver and St. Paul, but they were all part of the Tom Petty shows.

Ever think maybe they just branched out and played 2 Adelaide shows b/c they sell tickets really well and have a good reception down in Australia? I used to live in OZ (i'm an aussie) and got to see them on the '03 tour, there's every reason they'd want to play more shows down there.

I can see why the paranoia is creeping in though, can't you? I mean 2 Adelaide shows! ;-) Imagine the panic down here if they'd played Hobart or Darwin on this tour as well? God you'd never convince anyone it wasn't a farewell tour then!

And they will be. I have complete faith that we will see them again in the next couple of years. And I doubt they will ever do a "Farewell Tour". I want to grow really old watching them rock on and am quite prepared to watch the lot of them morph into the Rolling Stones. (Well as long as Ed isn't quite as tragic as Mick)

I was only pulling your leg! ;-). I agree that they are all freaking out because of PJPTSS. But can you blame us? We do wait a long time between visits here in Oz and tix are hard to get when they do come. And it's going to be such a long wait (did I say that already? must be withdrawal!) but I know they'll be back and I know they aren't going to break up.

Not worried! Not worried! But I am jealous! Perhaps I should come to NY. I mean does he just wander around the streets waiting for rabid fans to come chat? I suppose I shouldn't complain, I've seen them 6 times now but it never seems enough somehow. It's like a sugar addiction the more you have the more you want.

You should!!! I would be your number one customer! I can't believe I've sat here all night the last two weekends in a row vicariously scanning the pit for anything, anything that could make me as vaguely happy as I was on Nov 13 & 16!

I won't believe it. Because it's not true. As a previous user said, they think they'll be something like the Stones. In their 60's and touring.

Will never forget hearing Ed at Melbourne #2 95 saying "See you guys next year". Course, they came back 3 years later.

Who knows what they'll decide to do? It might make sense for them personally to stop soon, with young families. As far as Australia goes, I get the feeling they all had such a good time (Ed's illness notwithstanding) that they would love to come back in a few years if they continue on. But if they don't, well, it's been one hell of a ride, and this past Oz tour was incredible.

I know I'm right. Pearl Jam will be touring for a long time yet. They are nowheres to retiring from music. Why do I say this? Because they wouldn't let the fans down.
  • Blind3Blind3 Posts: 1,149
Playing live allows PJ to reach their fans, get out their message (Question authority on the issues, social responsibility, environmental stewardship, etc..) in a way that they can't on record. They are also a band who loves to play live and is as good as there is in rock at it. They also have a deep love for the fans and the fans for them; which makes playing live not only profitable ,but FUN. Bottom line, I can't see them giving that up for at least another two albums/tours.

You won't have to. They already exist! Nobody can wipe them out of history now! They will tour again. Everybody needs to calm down and keep the faith. They've had a long tour, it's nearly over, they need to rest and regroup and then they'll be back. We all just need to take a deep breath and wait!

  • You alarmists are crazy. They aren't done by a long shot. At the end of Reading Ed said that they'd be back next summer, though Mike also said they were going into the studio after the tours finished. Either way, there is NO idication or reason to believe Pearl Jam is calling it quits. Some of you people REEEEEAAAAALLLLLLLLLLLLLLYYYY need to relax.

I just think that this rumour is completely wrong and pretty stupid. Why would Pearl Jam call it quits this early in the game? Hell, The Stones have been around for more than 40 years. Pearl Jam won't be calling it quits for a long, long time.

Reading back through the thread I think you'll find that a lot of the panic is coming from some Oz fans. I think that's because we don't seem to get them here as often as you do in US/Europe. Ed did say at the end of the Melbourne leg that they won't be back for awhile. Couple this with PJPTSS and SOME of the Aussie fans are freaking out a bit but as far as I can see it's completely unfounded. The rest of us here are calm and keeping the faith.

  • wow u people are really odd in the land down under
"Do you come from a land down under?
Where women glow and men plunder?"

    (sorry, I couldn't resist the temptation... :D)

I'm staying optimistic about the whole thing. When I saw them in concert it seemed like they were having so much fun playing together and never once did the idea of them splitting up cross my mind. In Zagreb Ed announced that they would come back next year, although I'm pretty sure it was the wine talking. Nevertheless, I'm keeping my hopes up on seeing them again in Europe soon and not necessarily in my hometown (even though I'm secretly keeping my fingers crossed for that exact thing to happen :)).

Anyhoo, the middle of East Bumblefuck, Europe would do just fine as long as I don't have to travel to another continent because, let's face it, money doesn't fall off trees. If I could live off air just to see them, I would.

It would be selfish to demand a new tour right away, having in mind that the guys have personal lives and families that have been somewhat neglected during this big tour. So it's safe to say that they will take some time off to figure out what they want to do next, but calling this a split-up would be absurd.

They'll come back to Europe, South America, Australia, keep touring the US and for all yee of little faith, yes, they will eventually tour the South... :D:D:D

Lots of love to all of you Jammers out there!!! :D
