Pearl Jam may have been recording to Digital Audio Tape at the time (instead of Analog Tape or straight into a modern computer), which may have had a 16 bit, 44 or 48 khz limit. Just a guess, but i can't think of another reason not to release in 24/96. I'm glad they're not just upsampling to 24 bits and selling us on quality that's not there.

It does raise the question of what they used to master the vinyl. If the above is true (and i have no authority to say it is or isn't), then it's possible that the vinyl master is only CD quality.

I'm more concerned about the quashed dynamics. It's not about being snobby and liking great DR numbers, it's about turning it up and having it sound f*cking awesome -- not homogenous and muddled and painful.

I haven't listened yet though ... so i may be totally jumping the gun.

So, did anyone ever find out a good outer sleeve option for these vault vinyl releases? I used an open-ended 13x13 1/2 LP sleeve that I had lying around for vault 3 and vault 4, but it leaves about an inch exposed, so I'm hoping there's something better out there. Any ideas would be appreciated.

it is a great place! i find myself sneaking in there every week looking for used stuff. we're lucky to have four record shops in town.
yeah, no record stores ever have used pearl jam. but i actually saw both vs. and vitalogy in encore this year - bet they didn't last long!
