My favorite album ever. I know Ed said they kinda made a rock opera album unwittingly. The whole album tells a story from 1st song to last. Some words when spoken...Can't be taken back...0

It's in top 5 Pearl Jam albums. By far their best since Yield.

I put Gigaton on hold yesterday and listened to Avocado while out running errands. Still holds up quite well. Severed Hand, Marker, Army Reserve, Come Back, Inside Job, Parachutes.......some great tunes on that record. And a great tour with some amazing shows.0

My first PJ show was during the Avocado tour so the album has a special place in my heart.
Lots of great songs, for me especially Wasted Reprise, Come Back, Parachutes, Unemployable, Severed Hand.
I also like the mix a lot (compared to Backspacer for example, which I dont like).Music is what feelings sound like.0 -
Avocados don’t normally age very well. This one on the other hand did! See you gotta keep the ‘Stone’ in. Take it out and it goes all brown and mushy.Melbourne #1 '98

Second best PJ album post-2000, slightly behind Gigaton IMO. It's aged beautifully, unlike actual avocados (HA!). Big Wave belongs on Backspacer, tho.0

I agree with so many comments here...
I think this is a really strong album, but...- "Gone" is a great tune, but not captured at its best here. Man, turning a really good tune into blah... that's how I feel. I really did love the demo (appeared on a Xmas single, right?). I don't want too much of Ed totally solo... then, after all, why couldn't it be on an Ed solo album? If there was a way to incorporate the band in a better way, great. If not, get a great Ed performance.
- Totally agree with the "Big Wave" thoughts. Leave it off. Make it a b-side. Throw it on Lost Dogs 2. It's out of place and this is a stronger album without it. Less is more sometimes... Riot Act ("Get Right"), Binaural ("Gods' Dice", "Evacuation") and Lightning Bolt ("SBM", "LTRP") all would've benefited from a "less is more" approach, in my opinion. Nothing is wrong with 10 or 11 songs and 40 - 45 minutes... make it really tight and strong. I'm rambling.
- Ugh on the production. Too harsh. You've heard it before. Say what you will about Brendan O'Brien, but I think those records are produced really well. I don't listen to this album a lot because of the harshness.

Hah,
I actually do not agree on Big Wave, love it! (Would have rather left of Comatose and switch it for Let it Ride)
But I do agree on Undone.

Avocado would have been a better album if the production and, more specifically, the vocals were less harsh and more full sounding. Ex. Comatose and WWS. You put Eddie's "Gigaton" vocals, Josh Evans production and some more BoB melodies on Avocado and you would have had a masterpiece. I still love a lot of the songs though.Post edited by vedpunk on0

To me, it has got punch and is a nice rocker live, but overall, I feel like its is to me forgetful and an attempt at a punk rock song, which falls short when compared to the rest of the songs on the album (you could say the same about Big Wave, but its more melodic and the outro is more "refined" + it was in that movie about surfing penguins too
)

Comatose has lyrics like "leave the hatred on the cross," while Big Wave starts with "I used to be crustacean, in an underwater nation."
I dunno, for me, Comatose slams and Big Wave chuckles.0 -

I love avocado (the album). Big Wave is really the only song that doesn't click with me... feels more like a B side.

I like Big Wave for what it is, a little surf rocker, it’s not a good fit for the album though. Most PJ albums have these one off songs on them though.0
