With all the other 90's artists what do you think the odds of PJ being inducted first time eligibility? Do they beat NIN and Smashing Pumpkins? Does the band even care to get nominated?

I know this opinion is in the minority here, but Jessica Letkemann who follows this band like no other and also writes for billboard, says they will be eligible this go round.

Vedder has given 4 induction speeches. Just for that, they'll be in there first year.

PJ for sure. I'm not really sure why the Pumpkins would even be considered except for the fact that the HOF doesn't always make a lot of sense. I don't see the relevance of the Pumpkins, even though I was once a fan. A band like Jawbreaker, who influenced many bands, should be inducted, but they won't even be allowed to step into the building. If I became a billionaire, I would open a punk rock HOF. Punk has influenced many other genres.

From what I understand... they're eligible for the class of 2016 ballot, but the ceremony isnt held until 2017

Ten was released August 27, 1991.

Nominees are being announced this Thursday October 8. Ceremony for 2016 class will be sometime April 2016. 2014 nominees were announced on October 16, 2013. Ceremony was sometime April 2014. If Pearl Jam were not eligible, Nirvana would not have been eligible either...

It has nothing to do with what month an album came out! Only the year! Madonna first album was released in July 1983 and she was inducted in April 2008! Green days first album was released in may 1990 and were inducted in april 2015! I can come up with about 50 other examples. PJ WILL be eligible for induction this April 2016!

I think Smashing Pumpkins are more influential than you give them credit for - often in unexpected places, I know M83 used Mellon Collie as inspiration for their double album a while back, and I definitely hear their fuzzed out melodies in other contemporary music.

I think they do care, and I think their chances of being inducted first time around are about 100%.

Based on the following excerpt from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame website (http://rockhall.com/inductees/induction-process/), I'm with the 2016 folks:

Eligibility

To be eligible for induction as an artist (as a performer, composer, or musician) into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the artist must have released a record, in the generally accepted sense of that phrase, at least 25 years prior to the year of induction; and have demonstrated unquestionable musical excellence.

We shall consider factors such as an artist's musical influence on other artists, length and depth of career and the body of work, innovation and superiority in style and technique, but musical excellence shall be the essential qualification of induction.
