Unless it's an extremely violent perp,Or a major threat to the gen pub.Police should hang back. Not worth the collateral damage.

Another thought. With services like On-Star and others that can alter the ignition of a vehicle via Sat communication,What if law enforcement had the capability to tap into that existing resource and technology to ignition kill vehicles that are fleeing? This already exists, just a matter of using it.

    NOOOOOOO

Thought of spending big bucks on a machine that gives others access to my privacy pisses me off.

One of my cars collects data that can be retrieved by the courts to be used against me in court. Need to find way to clear data with push if a button. Won't buy a new gm or other car with tracking devices.

Love driving my old analog iron.
Yeah, I don't approve of anything like that. I wouldn't want cops to have access to the function of our cars. Most of us are law abiding citizens, so we shouldn't all be subjected to that level of control by law enforcement.

Again, drones that can be released specifically to follow suspects. The suspects will never even know it's following them. Seems like the ideal solution to me.
All cars made in last 15 or so years collects data including speed, seatbelt use, gas pedal position, brake ideal position. This data can be and is used by police. The onstar thing just adds more including location. Hell thing has a mic so could potentially be listening to your conversations. Easily.

That's not great either, but I was thinking more of the ability to just shut our cars down while we're driving them and then maybe lock us in.... though maybe that's possible too now. I live car-free.... and now I'm even more glad about that than I was before, lol. Sounds like having a car is now about equivalent to having a computer chip embedded in the backs of our necks. :confounded:

  • look both ways. use your eyes and ears. don't hit the crosswalk button and just start walking, thinking hitting that button magically stops all traffic. I see it all the time, and it bugs the shit out of me. I'm always teaching my kids....hit the button.......don't move until you KNOW the drivers have seen you and are either stopped or slowing down. in the winter, wait until they stop (it gets slippery up here in Winterpeg).

high speed chase through residential neighbourhood is stupid unless the perp is armed and dangerous.

might I suggest the cop having beers at poker night saying they live for the chase is posturing in front of others to make himself seem big and tough and important? I'd report that fucker immediately.

Hugh watch cop shows and you'll see many clearly love the chase. What they do.

those shows are edited heavily to up the dramatic factor. I'm sure that it is an adrelanine rush, no doubt. But I'd certainly hope they wouldn't give high speed chase if it's not necessary.

I'm not a big fan of drones but that sounds like an appropriate use of them and one of the best ideas presented here.

  • What speed limits should be place on the drones though?
What if there are other drones in the airspace?
Should the police warn other drones that they are coming?
What if two drones collide?....there would be hell to pay. The other drone owners right to free airspace was violated.
    No to drones.

These are all the questions they can ask and resolve. I didn't say I thought it should be implemented tomorrow. Obviously laws and processes would need to be put in place so that it works. But I am positive that it could be done through technology and common sense, just like anything else.

I recently read a pretty long article about how driverless cars are only about 10 years away. questions came up as to liability if two driverless cars got into an accident. the manufacturer? the owner? you could have your car drive you to work, and then give it a command to send it home and retrieve you at the end of the day. no expensive downtown parking!

I read that driverless cars would reduce car accidents by 98% and almost totally eliminate traffic gridlock (because they eliminate human error, which is basically the whole problem with cars). Pretty fucking solid argument for driverless cars!!

every machine can and eventually will malfunction. but if they reduce accidents by that much, awesome!

Yes, that's why it's 98% and not 100% I guess. The machines are MUCH more reliable that people (and of course include system checks and all kinds of safeguards). I am all for driverless cars. They even lead to far less emissions, no idling.... no more wreckless speeders, no more idiots forgetting to signal.... the list of benefits go on and on and on. The big negative is that it would put a whole lot of people who drive for a living out of jobs..... but I like to think that somehow new (better???) jobs could be found, since a whole new infrastructure and auto industry would have to go along with this.... I think it's a really interesting topic, especially since it looks like it really will happen one day!

    Driverless cars!!!!

Get so much enjoyment from driving. The freedom. Forces. Understanding how each part if the machine works. Feel so fortunate being born when I was.

Soon can just be hatched in test tube and stay there. All info delivered.
