Nart, you should play the victim card.

I can't read it. Is it possible/OK to enlarge?

    What was the avatar?

That photo of the dead toddler washed up on the beach - the son of that man who was denied sponsorship in Canada.
    Hmmm.

Brutal photo. Strong imagery. Possible Pulitzer. Heart breaking. It evokes the same, strong emotional response within me as the vulture over the dying child in Africa.

I encourage displaying and sharing the imagery. I'm not sure I would encourage it as someone's avatar or signature, but who am I to say?

Well, reading closed threads can be quite educational. I have slightly more idea what the hell is going on and who has issues with who. Also realising there are some world class trolls hanging around these days!

So glad I decided to visit AMT finally haha

The image, heartbreaking as it is, is very useful for raising awareness. I agree, sharing imagery can be very powerful.

I'm sure anyone using it as an avatar is doing so for that very reason and not likely to keep it indefinitely. I don't believe it breaks any rules.

I get this, Bri. And I get where BB is at and where his passions rest.

But at the end of the day, this is a rock band's website and sometimes, people wish to come on it and talk rock and roll- escaping from the brutal news of the day.

In the MT... all is fair (generally speaking)... and posting imagery of dead children is par for the course as far as I am concerned. But I'm not sure Other Music or The Porch should provide for the same latitude.

I'm not deliberately trying to play Devil's Advocate. I'm just thinking aloud.

But having it as your avatar is very different to posting it. It's a very unobtrusive thing the avatar, sure they're only tiny!

But like others have said, you really have to click on my image to see what it is. Someone has it out for me. Just wish people would stop being hypocrites. Enough already. I've spent a considerable amount of time off the boards. I can leave if the mods want me to leave. Just ask in a pm and I'll walk away,

People have way too much time on their hands if they're engaging in personal vendettas against people they only 'know' through this forum, it's sad

I have to admit I don't even notice people's avatars and I never bother to click on them to see what they are. Clearly others are more observant than me though :)

There was no malicious effort here, BB. As I said... I get where you are at. I'm only discussing whether or not such imagery is appropriate or not. I haven't made any judgements at all. It's a legitimate topic for discussion I think though.

In my over 10 years on here I have never once flagged a post, it's not really my style And I've seen some pretty disgusting things said on here. But I may start flagging some of these fuckin' trolls on here. As entertaining as they can be sometimes..... they are mostly just toxic, and we have lost a lot of good posters over the years because they were baited by trolls.

    Emphasis mine.

    http://blog.amnestyusa.org/europe/syrias-refugee-crisis-in-numbers/

    REFUGEES IN THE REGION

More than 4 million refugees from Syria (95%) are in just five countries Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq and Egypt:

Lebanon hosts approximately 1.2 million refugees from Syria which amounts to around one in five people in the country

Jordan hosts about 650,000 refugees from Syria, which amounts to about 10% of the population

Turkey hosts 1.9 million refugees from Syria, more than any other country worldwide

Iraq where 3 million people have been internally displaced in the last 18 months hosts 249,463 refugees from Syria

Egypt hosts 132,375 refugees from Syria

The UN humanitarian appeal for Syrian refugees is just 40% funded.

Funding shortages mean that the most vulnerable Syrian refugees in Lebanon receive just $13.50 per month or less than half a dollar a day for food assistance.

More than 80% of Syrian refugees in Jordan living below the local poverty line.

    CONFLICT IN SYRIA

Around 220,000 people have been killed and 12.8 million people are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance inside Syria

More than 50% of Syria’s population is currently displaced

    INTERNATIONAL RESETTLEMENT

In total, 104,410 resettlement places have been offered globally since the start of the Syria crisis, which equates to a mere 2.6% of the total population of Syrian refugees in Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, Egypt and Turkey.

400,000 people in the five main host countries – or 10% – are in need of resettlement according to the UN Refugee Agency, UNHCR.

Amnesty International is calling for at least 10% of Syria’s most vulnerable refugees to be resettled from the main host countries by the end of 2016

    KEY FACTS:

Gulf countries including Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Bahrain have offered zero resettlement places to Syrian refugees.

Other high income countries including Russia, Japan, Singapore and South Korea have also offered zero resettlement places.

Germany has pledged 35,000 places for Syrian refugees through its humanitarian admission program and individual sponsorship; about 75% of the EU total.

Germany and Sweden together have received 47% Syrian asylum applications in the EU between April 2011 and July 2015

Excluding Germany and Sweden, the remaining 26 EU countries have pledged around 8,700 resettlement places, or around 0.2% of Syrian refugees in the main host countries.

It's interesting, the weird thrill some get in nitpicking. Just swim on by the bait.

I don't think the photo was off limits. I think that whether or not it is appropriate as an avatar is worth discussing.

There are some limitations one exercises discretion with. For example, when arguing for the death penalty... I try to keep gory details to a minimum- even though the gruesome details would do a very good job of generating support or enthusiasm for the task of sentencing sadistic murderers like Clifford Olson to death for their crimes. Likewise, using a crime scene photo as my avatar to further my cause wouldn't be appropriate either.

There's a line somewhere and I'm not saying I know where that line is. I only know the line I'm comfortable with and that might not necessarily be the most appropriate. Clearly, Kat and the mods felt as if it was somewhere other than where BB thought it was or they would have ignored the request to have them force a change. Ultimately, there's been no harm done really.

    * The only problem I have with 'squealers' (for lack of better word) is that I have the feeling they are the type of people that can't take what they dish out. I have no idea who might have pushed for moderation we are speaking of... but it's hard not to have your suspicions.
