Right on. (extra points for "evil fuckery")PJ_Soul said:
Yeah, it's the murders (or attempted murders, whihc are more common in the end) committed by families (usually at least one male family member, sometimes more, and sometimes a female family member is in on it, usually the woman's mother-in-law apparently) when they think a family member (invariably a woman) has shamed the family by doing x, y, or z (usually related to who they love or who they might or might not have fucked). Killing them is the only way to restore honour to the family. Yes, this is practiced by some fundamentalist Sharias and other fundamentalist religious groups that place women below men (which is a big problem in the world still), but the practice isn't limited to those who practice Sharia law.... it does seem limited to Muslims and, more rarely, Sikhs, but that could just be because of the specific population in metro Vancouver. It seems to me that it's much more about disgusting views towards women than it is real religion. These men never come off as super religious guys. They come off as revolting pigs who are using religion/tradition as an excuse to be evil and dominate a woman in their life. I mean, the only difference between these kinds of killings and other murders committed by whoever (murderous joe schmoe who killed his girlfriend for cheating on him, which we all know happens pretty regularly) is that these particular scum bags drag religion into it. So isolating the religious "wackos" here doesn't seem fair at all.
Anyway, the fact that there are ads on trains trying to convince these pigs not to consider such acts is pretty fucked up IMO. I dunno, doesn't it suggest that those who created the ad think these fucks are reasonable people who would otherwise be good people? And that they really don't know any better? I take exception to that idea. It's almost like in the attempt to try and get people off the idea, it normalizes the concept, and almost admits that somehow murder justified by religion is different from murder justified by plain old evil fuckery. So that's messed up on more than one level. It brews and stirs up stereotypes that are prevalent locally (yes, there were photos of men obviously from India and the middle east on the poster, so we knew exactly who it was meant for), while making it seem like it's a lesser crime than "regular" murders all at the same time.

Here's an article on a pretty big honour killing trial in Canada. I am not sure that government advertising is necessary though to counter it.

My point is that you go out of your way to point out all the faults with the Muslim religion. But yet stay quiet on the rest. Don't act like a dumb ass now. Not after you claim to know more then anybody when it comes to politics. You knew exactly what I meant.BS44325 said:

I didn't even mean to open this can of worms. I just thought that ad was really fucked up!
Oh, speaking of which, I also recently saw a flyer on a bus about how men who are thinking about following a woman off the bus in order to sexually assault her should rethink his plan because it's against the law and basically not nice. But that wasn't government sponsored. I'm not sure who put those up. They don't seem to be working though (going back to my original comment about what's happening in Vancouver). With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be careful. Strive to be happy. ~ Desiderata0 -

But I'm a bit confused about a few things here, muskydan.
You use the work "feel" but don't say what the feeling is- anger? Frustration?
You mention "the honest discussions about race that was all the rage last fall". By "rage" are you being facetious or implying that the discussion was dishonest? Or has the discussion in general just dropped off?
Also, I'm wondering- do you believe it is the job of the media to instigate discussion rather than simply report the news?
I definately think those discussions are dishonest. Nobody will touch this issue w/ a 10 foot pole since nobody in politics want's to be categorized a racist. That's what those honest discussions will lead you too...always does. Let's just start w/ the hands up don't shoot nonsence that turned out to big a massive lie and go from there...
