i was kinda fearing the crowd would be dead for the participation bits........and i have to say while the crowd was energised and singing along and doing alot of singing, were still not fucken doing our part like europe and america, south america, canada....and its shitting me.......

    i noticed

    one....no YEAHS during alive solo
two...no DO DO DO DO DO during black outro
three.. Even flow last chorus ed gave it to us but took it back at "some day yet.. cause we sounded like we were singing silent night for christmas...(lol actually nah it was pretty decent, but not heaps heaps loud)

are there just too many casual fans in Australia??
however whats weird is ive never heard a boot from Boston, or Europe where the crowd sings PLEASE DONT GO ON ME....however from where i was the whole crowd was singing the chorus.....kudos also for Black standard participations "im spinning/drop away...", that was nailed, also why go was solid singin, nothing man was also solid in the singalong....which is strange, the usual particpation bits are missed however parts of songs, such as nothingman, that dont usually get sung along to were sung........ahhhh so frustrating.......

anyone care to comment who was at the show? maybe my hearing was muffled and i didnt hear the actual crowd

And a Big HAPPY BIRTHDAY from me, Jill.....hope you're lucky enough to be celebrating it here in Australia!
  • "I'm sure everyone that goes to PJ concerts could name songs that they wished had been played...and that will always be with a band that has such a huge amount of songs....sadly they can't play them all.....could you imagine that concert!!!"

True true i know - but still think a total of 1 song from NC,Bin,RA and just 2 each from Vit, and Yield is a little (just a little) disappointing when i've flown in from a different country!! Honestly it was great though, just great to see em. I just wish i was stayin' tomorrow night!
Oh dear :( You can please some of the people some of the time, but never all of the people all of the time. I think our boys do a pretty good job pleasing most of the people all of the time. ;)

I think the crowd was quite good. That was my third time at a "First Sydney Show".

I would rate it up there. Close to if not better than the 98 crowd.

Pearl Jam were playing very tight, and Ed's Voice was in very good form. We are in for one hell of a Tour.

Glad I held off buying tickets to the 18th GIG... they had half price flyers in all the seats which entitles you to half price tickets!

Looks like Mr Coppel underestimated how many tickets he could sell. And didnt want an empty acer arena for the third gig.

    Looking forward to tonight

  • This band is incredible. Every show seems to be better than the last. The set list apeared to be a good warm up for the tour (lots of classics, up tempo material). I guess I expected it for the first night in Oz. I bet as the tour progresses we will start to see the songs that will make all the die hards happy. The band was on fire. Played as well I have ever seen. We were 6th row on the floor, center and the 10C section was rockin'. Don't know about the rest of the crowd (was too focused on the band). However, in my experience Sydney rock crowds are pretty ordinary. If PJ got them up and jumping, that is a good sign. I am hoping show #3 will be all the die hards and will be the best in Sydney.

Looking forward to show #2 tonight.

    I love this band.

    Hi,

Minor disappointment was that I felt the setlist was a little conservative -

I dunno, you got 2 hours in which to fit what are we now... 8 studio albums not counting the two cds of B-Sides on lost dogs as well as several other unreleased tracks, covers etc.

To keep everyone happy they'd have to be playing for over eight and a half hours of music.

In 2003 I got tickets to 2 shows because I knew I wasnt going to hear every song I wanted to, and those 2 shows covered most of what I wanted to hear.

This year I am going to 3... 6 hours of live Pearl Jam should cover it!

Yeah wasn't quite sure what to expect. Sydney has usually been a few shows into the tour. Not to mention they have had a month off (apart from the couple of Bridge School benefit gigs).

    They were very tight.

I was a little dissappointed with RVM.. was expecting the usual Jam session.

    wow wow wow.

got to hombush about 5.30pm and went straight to the 10 club ticket window. was almost shaking opening up the envelope and was stocked to see 3rd row tickets infront of mike staring back at me (10club number 188xxx)! picked up a poster - great poster by the way - king kong atop of the centre point tower with sydney in the back ground. i love it when they do something city centric. also just a note on that the poster said 1 of 12 and had 7th Nov 06 on it..... could we be getting a different poster for each night......? i guess i'll find out tonight!

KOL were great. arena wasnt that full for them - ridiculously you cant take a beer to your seat in that place even if it is in a plastic cup so there were plenty of people outside drinking their beers! we were sitting next to a canadian couple (i asked where in america they were from.... sorry..... like calling an aussie a kiwi!) who had got engaged at the hamilton canada show and were on their honeymoon - Pearl Jam making love happen all over the world!

Saw the set list go past up to the sound board so knew release was opening - chills - it was amazing.
the rest of the main set flew by so fast - highlights included i got shit, marker in the sand, daughter, tag of WMA and a really good call and response that ed seemed very impressed with, and of course DTE which i can just not get enough of live!

Encores were great. loved that they came out and sat down. gone is amazing and nothingman.... well i can die happy!

i was at the 3 sydney shows in 03 and this surpassed them all. not sure if it is the fact that it's the end of the tour and not the start or whether the band is just in a better place now than back then, but they seemed to be genuinly having fun last night. i even saw stone smile and rocking out!

observations - ed was drinking tea at the beginning and spitting/blowing his nose in a towel a bit. he discarded the tea for wine by about the 4th song though. hope that throat of his is alright!
mike is just such an entertainer. as someone who grew up idolising mr vedder i found myself watching mike most of the night. perhaps because i was right in front of him... but how about how he points people out all night and really interacts with the crowd - makes you feel special - i know it sounds silly but thats the truth!
ed seemed pretty chatty tonight. loved the mistake in greivance and the little "im sorry that is the first mistake i have ever made. i think we should all just move on" speach! too funny.

now onto tonight and the 2nd of 7. i must admit i left last night wondering how they will top that tonight.... but that fear quickly left when i remembered what band this was.... it's pearl jam people and every night you get to see them live is an absolute treat regardless of set list/time on stage!
  • thanks for the reviews so far everyone!! 5 days to go for me, arghhhh!

jim and joel - great description! :D

HUGE ty to you again joel... i <3 G2F :o

crowd was great i thought. better than the sydney 03 shows - could have something to do with 6000 more people!
lots of singing/clapping. good call response in daughter, singing on nothingman, elderly woman and betterman.
i was down the front and that was obviously going off but when i looked around most people seemed to be on their feet in the stand and rocking out.
in RITFW with the house lights on there was some great hands in the air clapping that looked awesome from the floor! ed seemed impressed too!

  • 12 hours later....

Firstly, thanks to the 10C and the 10C members for making this one memorable. Row 10 made it feel really intimate for such a large venue.

Easily the best Australian show I've been to, great setlist and great Crowd participation. I left thinking it might have just been the 10C section is what made it feel that way, but as I've been reading the other reviews it seems like the energy was ALL through the room.

For those doubting the crowd involvment, i'd point them to the instrumental break in Daughter before the WMA tag. From the floor, it sound like every set of hands in the Arena were clapping in unison with Matt's snare hit. Enough to drown out Matt's snare hit!! Fantastic!

One of the stand out memories I've got is of Jeff in the low solid stance playing the 8-string Hamer in Why Go. It was almost identical to the ad for SWR amps back in the early 90's.

There's loads more I could go on about, but most of it has already been said.

    See you all tonight.

That clapping during daughter...OMG !! I honestly couldn't hear the snare either!! I was sitting kinda high and right to the side of the stage and we could see the entire arena clapping as one..something I'll never forget!!

As i just said...we were high and almost even behind the stage we were that far to the side..anyways everyone up there was jumping around and goin ape too!

ahh i love it woooooooooo

What an incredible night. My first pearl jam show which I've been awaiting for a few years now.

I was a bit worried about the crowd participation, as I had read that in the Riot Act tour it had been quite bad. But straight away I stopped worrying as the crowd was going insane.

Kings of Leon were suprisingly good, I went in with low expectaitons, and was quite suprised at how rad they were.

Release is a tied first for opening with Long Road, so I was stoked to hear those opening notes. Other highlights include Given to Fly, Black, Man of the Hour, Nothingman, Daughter and basically every other song.

Kinda sad that I'm not going tonight, but I guess I'll just have to be satasfied with going on the 18th.

    Hoorah!

Agreed. There was lots of singing and crowd participation. The only time there wasn't was during Throw Your Hatred Down.

I've seen PJ in Europe in 00, and last time around in Oz in 03, and that was by far the best performance yet. They seemed to be into it a lot more than the last few times I have seen them. Brilliant. And we scored an EV pick which was lying on the floor from the soundcheck. Pity about having to head home and miss the second Sydney show, but I'll be back for the 18th to go round all over again...bring it on!!
  • 3rd time I've seen them last night (still yet to hear Yellow ledbetter, bring it on tonight or Nov 18!!) Fantastic show, the best I've been to yet (admittedly the firt time i had 10 Club tickets - 3rd row!! Thank you Pearl Jam!!!).

Only gripe was the guitar lead breaks were very soft from where I was sitting, had great difficulty hearing either Mike or Stone cut loose at different points in the show.

Apart from that. everything was fan-fucking-tastic. Is Mike's behavior a standard at PJ shows? I've never seen him so animated on any DVD's or recall that much goofiness (in a good way) in '98 or '03. Maybe some 'herbal assistance' has been partaken? :)

Anyway, back tonight, up the back this time, no fan club tickets :(

Bring on yellow Ledbetter and Comatose!

  • My first PJ concert. Everything and more than I expected. 'OZPJAM' and 'littlefootsteps' threads are spot on. A great 2 hour musical experience.
After the beautiful opener, the next 6 songs rocked that much I was almost worn out, so when they played Small Town I caught my breath. I can't believe the energy of the band.
Highlights are so many I don't know if I should list them all -what am i saying- THE WHOLE SHOW WAS A HIGHLIGHT!!!
Stellar versions of Even Flow/Evolution/Man of the Hour/Alive/Why Go were definite musical highlights, still can't believe how much these 40+ guys keep going at such a pace!! I'm 50, so it's inspiring!!!
Ed's voice, particularly his singing on Man of the Hour, was spectacular. Ended up watching him and Mike McCready most of the night - what a character Mike is!!!!, and I'll never forget his solo on Even Flow.
The crowd was great, the singalongs echoing around the arena. My voice was shot at the end and still is, lucky I've got today off work!!!
It's 2.45pm Sydney time, some 15 hours after the show and I'm still excited at witnessing the greatest band in the world. Gee, I'm gushing like a teenager but what the heck!!!
Whilst I note some may be disappointed at the set list, and I certainly wasn't, it must be remembered that 'Ten' and 'Vs' were huge down here.
To Ed, Mike, Stone, Jeff, Matt, Boom - thank you sooooo much.
  • please i hope they bash out life wasted tonight, every thing evry one is saying is so true, that song can be taken on so many levels-just like all pj's stuff- but for personally, as these songs are gifts from them to us to ponder reflect and inspire, it is about the five sense reality prison we are indoctrinated into, i have woken up, to a life wasted chasing the shit 'they' make us believe is important, but the truth is the only truth is infinate love, every thing else- and i mean everything,- is illusion, see you all tonight.
  • Sweet Fuck!!

My first Pearl Jam show and what a show it was. I had always hoped that when I saw them live they would open with Release and I was so fucking pumped when i heard those chords playing. The band had so much energy!! I've only really seen DVD's and video's of them live but I've never seen them jump around so much and just look to be enjoying themselves so much.

Highlights of the night were Ed going to the side of the stage for a smoke during the Even Flow solo, then Matt's fucking drum solo, the crowd going phycho during Alive, the mini acoustic set and the gravity of the live "Given to fly". We had great sets in the first row of one of the side stands, about 20 metres from the band, and could see the crowd aswell going off.

Looking foward to hearing the bootleg. I must have been about the first person to pick "nothingman" and "Gone". I just screamed out and no one seemed to join me!! Loved the Mexican wave that got passed around about 5 times before the show aswell. I regret not getting more tickets now, but ohh well

P.S. Big props to the guy in the blue Mookie shirt infront of me on the floor. You were so into the show, it was great!!
