Smile_dad, I hope you didn't mind my bumping this "old' thread (I'm sure it's NOT! ;))...but my soon to be 11 years old daughter has been into Pearl Jam album a lot lately and she has been asking a lot of questions...

Questions like: "How old do I have to be to go see Pearl Jam concert?"

Me: "Um, no age limit. Why? You want to go see them?"

Raina's eyes lit up: "Yeah!!! I want to go see them!!!"

I smiled and said, "Sure, next time there's a show we can make it, you'll come with us!"

I showed her your thread and she was in heaven.

"Will Eddie pull me up on the stage, too?! I want to go up there with Eddie!"

Me: "No, honey...remember, it's about MUSIC!!! We all are there to experience the greatness of the band TOGETHER!"

Raina: "Ok, mom....but you got all the cool stuff (setlists, picks, drumsticks & corkscrew) AND your interpreter getting up on the stage with Eddie!!!"

Me: "That's for all of us to share in the house, sweetie!" ;)

The oldest son, 13, gave me an evil look going, "Raina's going to next show with you two? What about me??"

Mom groans...and says, "Ok, well, then you can come, too!"

Youngest son, 9, walks by and gives his puppy eyes...

"Yes, Noah, you can come, too..."

Yikes...one expensive show! Good thing our youngest daughter, 4, didn't say anything... she's too young. :D

But she does like my WWS in sign language...but not when it's being played on the CD. She likes "silent" music. ;)

But...I'm thinking to myself, "Darn, there goes my 'loosening up' with Pearl Jam!" - getting buzzed and crazy! :D

I do not drink and they have NEVER seen me drunk... and that is going to STAY THAT WAY!

    Oh well.

But it'll be great having almost of all our children in attendance for one show in the future...

Thanks, Smile_dad and your daughter, Shae for putting a big smile on my daughter's face.

    :)

What a great story! Seriously, one of my favorite PJ related stories ever. Not only what the band actually did (two huge thumbs up there!), but hearing how you speak about the band and of course, little Shae :)

What a great moment! What an awesome memory for you and your daughter.
  • I was at that show- I thought that it was really sweet they did that, and i thought your daughter had great taste! good for her :)

I brought my daughter to Thursday's Boston 2 show, and never expected the incredible night that we wound up having.

She's a big fan of the band, because her dad (ME) always has them playing. Well, so is her six year old sister, and their two year old brother! You should hear the three of them belt out "World Wide Suicide"! LOL

I've been a fan of the band since seeing them at Lollapalooza '92. Then I joined the TEN CLUB in late '94, so my number is low, therefore we had some insane seats for the shows. I brought my wife to night one, and she rocked out... then it was decision time on night 2. Since I bought the tickets, I wanted to take Shae, but because of her nine year old age, my wife and I were torn. I really wanted her to experience the BEST live band in the world! You see, she wants to be a singer when she grows up, so who better to have her witness than the man himself?

Shae LOVES "Smile", and we sing it as a family often. Well, I suggested that if she really wanted to hear it that night (because it's not really a staple in the set), that she should write a sign to request it. So she took my advise and came up with a 'way cool' smiley mouth, that she wrote the word "SMILE" in the center of it... in crayon. Underneath it she wrote "Eddie", then added 'three crooked hearts and swirls all around'... pretty cool sign.

Well, she was having a great time when towards the end of the first encore she held it up, and Mike saw it right away! He nodded and stared down like "maybe... it's on there...we'll see", then loooked back at me and I shrugged as if to say "C'mon, it's for her" (it's hard to really get that across in a couple seconds, but I tried) and when they left the stage my daughter got a little upset because the flowers she brought for the band were still on the ground. She didn't think they were coming back out. I reassured her that they'd be back and now was a good time to hold then up if they came back with a slow song.

Well they returned for Encore 2 and kicked it up a notch with "Why Go". I was lovin' it, but told her to just be patient. After "Life Wasted", I suggested she put 'em back in the air. This is when I was floored. Everyone around her was trying to get Eddie'd attention, and pointing to the flowers! He saw them and her... he came right over and Eddie told her to come up on the stage to give them to her! She was all smiles now, and went up and over the fence, and on to the stage! Eddie said "We'd like to fulfill a request from a young lady in the third row... It isn't a request really, as she's got something for us... so we'll do this for her."

Then she made it up there! Ed said "Thanks" twice for the flowers (according to Shae) then he introduced her to to the Garden crowd... and they gave her a GREAT big cheer! Shae smiled and waved (it felt like an eternity to me!) and the two of them gave the peace sign to everyone. He then gave her a little hug, and she was escorted off the stage and back into my arms. Eddie then said (I'll NEVER forget this!!!!) "This one's for SHAE" ... then they did a stellar version of SMILE! When Ed was done with theh harmonica he came over towards me and tossed it in my hands. Everyone around me parted like they red sea to let it get to me... it was unreal! He pointed to my daughter and I put it in her hands. Then he gave me a big thumbs up! During Ledbetter he waved good-bye to her!

It was truly amazing to have experienced this with my oldest, who was in my wife's belly (she was four months pregnant in '96 when we drove from Boston to Toronto to see them) as my wife and I danced in the back of the concert hall to "Yellow Ledbetter".

Now, ten years later I was dancing with that little girl again. Only this time she was on the outside watching, as well as listening.

Thank you, everyone around, us for being so kind to her. Thank you Ten Club for caring about the fans. And THANK YOU Eddie and the band for having a heart as big as your music is!

    Sorry this was so long!!!
    what a very cool story

  • What a lovely story... actually made me cry ... (sssssh :) ) Must have been such an unbelievable few moments... wow.
My 2 year old loves them too (and AiC :D) She especially loves Animal and WWS..actually she headbangs and dances away to them all. I'd say if she could walk she'd go even mentaller (she has CP) heh heh ... ah she's gas..

That was such a great story 'IamMine'!

Shae and I still talk about that AMAZING night! It's one we will NEVER forget!

I honestly believe that that one moment is going to change Shae's life forever. Now I know that might sound a bit whacky... but she has started writing lyrics!!! And has only mentioned ONE thing for Christmas...

    An ELECTRIC GUITAR!

She does seem to have pretty good taste in music for her age (slightly biased opinion, I know!) and her lyrics were kinda dark (yikes!).

IamMine...I am so glad that you are going to share the BEST live band in the world with your kids! It truly is (and was) incredible!

That didn't sound wacky at all! It is INCREDIBLE, though, that it has changed a NINE years old child!

How many nine years old GIRLS would be inspired to write lyrics?!!

Not to mention we need more female rockers! :)

Start saving up for that electric guitar...and then save up more afterwards...it's going to be an never-ending thing!

Our red room (aka music room, formerly "pastry room") is so full of musicial instruments, it's not funny!

We have three pianos (two are elsewhere in the house), four guitars, drums, amps, stereo system, at least three mics, and god know what else... our oldest son has never wanted anything but musicial instruments for christmas/birthdays. He just used up his gift certificate to purchase a new pedal (after his last 3 ones died) for his electric guitar. His brother constantly needs new drumsticks, new covers for his drums, and his pedal had to be replaced twice so far. He really needs new cymbals (it's actually the oldest's drums but the younger has been playing it a lot). I haven't gotten around to buying new ones because they're expensive!

Raina wants to play her violin she got for Christmas last year, but we suspected it may be a display kind because we can't figure out how to get it to make sounds at all, even with new bows.

But...we're trying to encourage her to sing but she's too damn shy. She wants to sing Life Wasted (wanted to change it to Do The Evolution, but I advised against it because of the overly religious people in this little white town) for her upcoming talent show in February at school.

Her father has been trying to get her to practice on the guitar...and this morning was the first time she touched the guitar and Livia (that's the four years old) came up to me with her ears covered, "Mommy, tell Raina to stop! She don't know how to play the guitar!"

 That wasn't nice, Livia, sweetie...

Anyhoo... good thing you only have two kids. :D;)

    Half the price... hehehe.

By the way, I call first dibs on the front row seats for your daughter's first rock concert!!

I want to show you the animations of my sons playing guitar and drums (they are old pictures):

I just wanted to bump this since European tour is just about over and fans should read this while they're still around (the ones who just usually visit for fanviews/tours info :))

I didn't want to hack your thread with my stories that bore others...

Ya, Tyler used to be in a band called Midget Soup - only lasted two days. LOL!

No one plays guitars or drums in this town that frustrates him so much... he LOVES the idea of living in Seattle where every block plays their own bands in their basements/garages.

I wish we could just pack up and move there - good place to expose my children to multi-cultures and different lifestyles. But damn, the living cost is way too HIGH there.

People are pretty narrow-minded here. :(

Anyway, they just play just for the kicks - they love it especially when their dad sings with them.

Raina DID consider "Gone" but I thought... the town would be PISSED at her for wanting to "get out of here". hahaha.

I worry too much...I have enough to deal with Tyler's school's attitude about his hair - he has the longest hair in school. I'm just tired, you know...

Well... Shae began taking guitar lessons last week...can you believe it?!!!

One single (truly INCREDIBLE) moment in her life, has changed it forever! - At least that's what I believe anyway.

I'm hoping that the first REAL song that she actually plays is.....SMILE!!!

    That would make me SMILE!

And now, as I watch Shae practice playing her guitar, I realize how amazing that one moment really was!
