MOSCOW, Feb 28 (Reuters) - Boris Nemtsov, a Russian opposition politician and former deputy prime minister, has been shot dead in central Moscow, the Interior Ministry said early on Saturday.

Nemtsov, 55, an outspoken critic of President Vladimir Putin, had been due to take part on Sunday in the first big opposition protest in months in the Russian capital.

He was shot four times late on Friday night, not far from the Kremlin in the center of Moscow. Police cars blocked the street where he was shot. An ambulance was also nearby.

"Nemtsov B.E. died at 2340 hours as a result of four shots in the back," an Interior Ministry spokeswoman said by telephone.

Sadly reminds me of this from Henry Rollins' Before the Chop (p.225)

"The great Russian journalist, Anna Politkavskaya whose reportage on Chechnya is unbearably heavy, her book A Small Corner of Hell: Dispatches From Chechnya, contains the kind of journalism that get you killed on the job. Ms. Politkavskaya was critical of Putin and put it in print. In October of 2006, she was shot and killed in the elevator of the apartment building she lived in. At this time the case is unsolved, but it should be obvious to all that Putin doen't like to be called out."

    Damn. :frowning:

in the back. that is just cowardice.

the funny thing to me is that putin said he will personally oversee the investigation.

is that a conflict of interest or what?

i don't want to hear anybody ever call obama "king obama" again. if you criticize him or challenge him in an election, you don't get shot. you get embarrassed, but you don't get shot.

    WTH...I didn´t know that...

First thinking: I always wondered that this not has happened earlier...

Rule #1 Do not undervalue Putin!

Isn´t it curious that all the Putin critics are criminal or that always happens stupid things to them on the street? Bad tongues mean that seriously some people will now try to drag Putin into this. But just why should someone want to hold him accountable for the defaults or bad luck of oppositionists?:i_dunno:

Others say that he has long time planned the shit of Ukraine....

Putin is currently murdering domestic opposition, shooting down passenger jets, invading Ukraine, flying bombers right up to european and north american airspace, and threatening the use of tactical nukes. This is not brain washing nonsense. This is another lunatic on the world stage taking advantage of western weakness. We ignore him at our peril.

I worry for Pussy Riot... I'm sure that Putin has been on their tails for a while. Perhaps they're too famous to be simply shot and killed without out roar from the public.

OK, I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and say this is not the 50's all over again (although I don't count out the distinct possibility that it is a modern version of all that). And I certainly agree that we should not ignore Putin.

But what is it exactly you propose we do, BS44325, to "start preparing"? Dig out backyard bomb shelters? Build more nukes? Store up 100 lb. sack of beans?

Maybe instead maybe go here and make a donation and be glad we don't live in Russia right now:

Comedy or not, I think watching Canadian bacon might do you some good lol

What does Putin stand to gain from attacking America? How can he profit from a terrible war that could cost millions of lives?

On the other hand, we have a bunch of posturing and blustery behavior (cold war) that, if people like you gulp it down, will keep the defense industries at full steam and make a profit for all the babies who suck at mama govs tits.

I am gulping down nothing. These are actual events. While you rail against the military industrial complex Putin tries to re-establish Russian hegemony over Europe. I'm sure the Ukrainians appreciate your movie recommendation.

I'm sorry, BS, but this really does sound like the 50's all over again. Putin, hegemony over Europe? I don't think so.

Actual like the Mossad assignating Iranian scientists in OTHER countries? Real like the Mossad assignating that diplomat a couple years ago? You mean real like those events? What's the difference? Don't answer, I already know.

Yes, I agree that the Baltic states could destabilize. This is not the same as to "re-establish Russian hegemony over Europe." Exaggerations like that weaken your argument.

I believe Russia will never turn back the clock and relive its Communist Cold War past.To much money now,to many gazillionaire Russian businessmen and a established free market economy.Putin may have some kind of small man power complex and likes to dick around with his weak neighbors but He won't have the support or stones to make his little quest for power more wide spread.
They are taking a bath with their economy right now and I think reports about him having 86% support of the people is manufactured.Brian I don't think you need to climb under your elementary school desk again just yet.
Someone will probably take a shot in Putin Direction sometime soon. This latest power move will not go un answered.
