For silk road it is almost the same but missing that authentication piece. If the cops or anyone else tries to trace back users it leads no where as all IP's on the site would be random. As soon as you log of the VPN it releases that IP for another random user later making it untraceable. I'm not 100% sure on this with silk road but thought that was a change put in place. And no, I have never been on it. VPN stands for Virtual Private Network. All corporations have it, it's how you can send office emails, and memos, with a localized address. (IP) which stands for Internet Provider. For example, this site is run on VPN via a U1 server that is owned and operated by the TenClub Llc. Hence all the email addys here being 'info at tenclub.net' or 'shipping at'...
