    I would say

    Primus
    Nirvana
    Alice in Chains
    Rage Against the Machine
    QOTSA

the above bands, I pretty much "get" their entire catalog. I like the Foos too, but sometimes their music melds together for me, so they dont get put in with the elite company.

You're the first person I've heard of, other than Eddie Vedder, to admit to being a fan of fugazi.

    Soul Asylum
    Wilco
    Mazzy Star
    Old 97s
    Mark Lanegan

I've got another ten bands that could vie for 5th place.

Los Lobos have been around since the 1970s but they "emerged" in the mid-1980s, does that count?

Just from the last couple years:
    The Spring Standards
    Lucius
    Trapper Schoepp & The Shades

Seriously. I never even heard of them until the mid 90's. I hears a couple songs of their when I got satellite radio in 03. I wasn't impressed.
